With the increasing demand for light-weight materials to reduce fuel consumption, the automobile industry has extensively studied magnesium alloys which are light weight metals. The intrinsic poor formability and poor ductility at ambient temperature due to the hexagonal close-packed (HCP) crystal structure and the associated insufficient number of independent slip systems restricts the practical usage of these alloys. Hot working of magnesium alloys using a forging or extrusion enables net-shape manufacturing with enhanced formability and ductility since there are several operative non-basal slip systems in addition to basal slip plane, which increases the workability. In this research, the thermomechanical properties of AZ80 Mg alloy were obtained by compression testing at the various temperatures and strain rates. Optical microscopy and EBSD were used to study the microstructural behavior such as misorientation distribution and dynamic recrystallization. The results were correlated to the hardening and the softening of the alloy. The experimental data in conjunction with a physical explanation provide the optimal conditions for net-shape forging under hot or warm temperatures through control of the grain refinement and the working conditions.
The deformation behavior of a bulk amorphous and crystallized amorphous $Zr_{22.5}Ti_{14}Cu_{12.5}Ni_{10}Be_{22.5}$ alloy extracted from a commercial golf club head was characterized at room temperature ana $300^{\circ}C$. At room temperature, amorphous specimens revealed higher yield stress and ductility than partially crystallized alloy specimens. Amorphous alloy displayed some plasticity before fracture, which resulted from strain hardening and repeated crack initiation and propagation. The fracture is mainly localized on one major shear band, and the compressive fracture angle of the amorphous specimen between the stress axis and the fracture plane was about $40^{\circ}$ Scanning electron microscope observations revealed mainly a vein-like structure in the amorphous alloy But the fracture surface of partially crystallized amorphous alloy consisted of vein-like and featureless fracture structure. The partially crystallized alloy extracted from the thick part of the club fractured in the elastic region, at a much lower stress level than the amorphous, suggesting that relatively coarse crystal particles formed during cooling cause the brittle fracture.
For investigating rubber pad sheet metal forming process, the rubber pad deformation characteristics as well as the contact problem of rubber pad-sheet metal has been analyzed. In this paper, the behavior of the rubber deformation is represented by hyper-elastic constitutive relations based on a generalized Mooney-Rivlin model. Finite element procedures for the two-dimensional responses, employing total Lagrangian formulations are implemented in an implicit form. The volumetric incompressibility condition of the rubber deformation is included in the formulation by using penalty method. The sheet metal is characterized by elasto-plastic material with strain hardening effect and analyzed by a commercial code. The contact procedure and interface program between rubber pad and sheet metal are implemented. Inflation experiment of circular rubber pad identifies the behaviour of the rubber pad deformation during the process. The various form dies and scaled down apparatus of the rubber-pad forming process are fabricated for simulating realistic forming process. The obtaining experimental data and FEM solutions were compared. The numerical solutions illustrate fair agreement with experimental results. The forming pressure distribution according to the dimensions of sheet metal and rubber pads, various rubber models and rubber material are also compared and discussed.
Tensile tests are widely used for evaluating mechanical properties of materials including flow curves as well as Young's modulus, yield strength, tensile strength, and yield point elongation. This research aims at analyzing the plastic flow behavior of high strength steels for automotive bodies using the finite element method in conjunction with the viscoplastic model considering the yield point elongation phenomenon. The plastic flow behavior of the high strength steel was successfully predicted, by considering an operating deformation mechanism, in terms of normalization dislocation density, and strain hardening and accumulative damage of high strength steel using the modified constitutive model. In addition, the finite element method is employed to track the properties of the high strength steel pertaining to the deformation histories in a skin pass mill process.
Ultrafine-grained or nanostructured alloys usually lack the strain hardening capability needed to sustain uniform tensile deformation under high stresses. To circumvent this problem, we fabricated the Cu-based composite reinforced with the 3-dimensionally interconnected $Cu_5Zr$ phase using the combined technique of rapid quenching and subsequent hot-rolling. The alloy exhibited a tensile ductility of ~2.5% together with a strength of 1.57 GPa, which exceeds the values of most commercially available Cu-Be alloys. In this study, we elucidated the structural origin of the high strength and tensile ductility of the developed alloy by examining the thermal stability of the $Cu_5Zr$ reinforcing phase and the energy (work) absorption capability of the Cu matrix.

Two approximate methods based on mechanism analysis suitable for seismic assessment/design of structural concrete are reviewed. The methods involve use of equal energy concept or equal displacement concept along with appropriate patterns of inelastic deformations to relate structure's maximum lateral displacement to member and plastic deformations. One of these methods (Clough's method), defined here as a ductility-based approach, is examined in detail and a modification for its improvement is suggested. The modification is based on estimation of maximum inelastic displacement using inelastic design response spectra (IDRS) as an alternative to using equal energy concept. The IDRS for demand displacement ductilities are developed for a single degree of freedom model subjected to several accelerograms as functions of response modification factor (R), damping ratios, and strain hardening. The suggested revised methodology involves estimation of R as the ratio of elastic strength demand to code level demand, and determination of design base shear using $R_{design}{\leq}R$ and maximum displacement, determination of plastic displacement using IDRS and subsequent local plastic deformations. The methodology is demonstrated for the case of a 10-story precast wall panel building.
An elastoplastic model for structured clays, which is formulated based on the fact that the difference in mechanical behavior of structured and reconstituted clays is caused by the change of fabric in the post-yield deformation range, is present in this paper. This model is developed from an elastoplastic model for overconsolidated reconstituted clays, by considering that the variation in the yield surface of structured clays is similar to that of overconsolidated reconstituted clays. However, in order to describe the mechanical behavior of structured clays with precision, the model takes the bonding and parabolic strength envelope into consideration. Compared with the Cam-clay model, only two new parameters are required in the model for structured clays, which can be determined from isotropic compression and triaxial shear tests at different confining pressures. The comparison of model predictions and results of drained and undrained triaxial shear tests on four different marine clays shows that the model can capture reasonable well the strength and deformation characteristics of structured clays, including negative and positive dilatancy, strain-hardening and softening during shearing.

Thin, high-strength steel roof cladding is widely used in residential and industrial low-rise buildings and is susceptible to failure during severe wind storms such as cyclones. Current cladding design is heavily reliant on experimental testing for the determination of roof cladding performance. Further study is necessary to evolve current design standards, and numerical modelling of roof cladding can provide an efficient and cost effective means of studying the response of cladding in great detail. This paper details the development of a numerical model that can simulate the static response of corrugated roof cladding. Finite element analysis (FEA) was utilised to determine the response of corrugated cladding subject to a static wind pressure, which included the anisotropic material properties and strain-hardening characteristics of the thin steel roof cladding. The model was then validated by comparing the numerical data with corresponding experimental test results. Based on this comparison, the model was found to successfully predict the fastener reaction, deflection and the characteristics in deformed shape of the cladding. The validated numerical model was then used to predict the response of the cladding subject to a design cyclone pressure trace, excluding fatigue effects, to demonstrate the potential of the model to investigate more complicated loading circumstances.
A fully coupled non-linear effective stress response finite difference (FD) model is built to survey the counter-intuitive recent findings on the reliance of pore water pressure ratio on foundation contact pressure. Two alternative design scenarios for a benchmark problem are explored and contrasted in the light of construction emission rates using the EFFC-DFI methodology. A strain-hardening effective stress plasticity model is adopted to simulate the dynamic loading. A combination of input motions, contact pressure, initial vertical total pressure and distance to foundation centreline are employed, as model variables, to further investigate the control of permanent and variable actions on the residual pore pressure ratio. The model is verified against the Ghosh and Madabhushi high acceleration field test database. The outputs of this work are aimed to improve the current computer-aided seismic foundation design that relies on ground's packing state and consistency. The results confirm that on seismic excitation of shallow foundations, the likelihood of effective stress loss is greater in deeper depths and across free field. For the benchmark problem, adopting a shallow foundation system instead of piled foundation benefitted in a 75% less emission rate, a marked proportion of which is owed to reduced materials and haulage carbon cost.
The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of powder shape and densification mechanism on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V components. BE powders are uniaxially and isostatically pressed, and PA ones are injection molded because of their high strengths. The isostatically compacted samples exhibit a density of 80%, which is higher than those of other samples, because hydrostatic compression can lead to higher strain hardening. Owing to the higher green density, the density of BE-CS (97%) is found to be as high as that of other samples (BE-DS (95%) and P-S (94%)). Furthermore, we have found that BE powders can be consolidated by sintering densification and chemical homogenization, whereas PA ones can be consolidated only by simple densification. After sintering, BE-CS and P-S are hot isostatically pressed and BE-DS is hot forged to remove residual pores in the sintered samples. Apparent microstructural evolution is not observed in BE-CSH and P-SH. Moreover, BE-DSF exhibits significantly fine grains and high density of low-angle grain boundaries. Thus, these microstructures provide Ti-6Al-4V components with enhanced mechanical properties (tensile strength of 1179 MPa).
