Mechanical behavior of asphalt concrete that accounts for viscoelasticity and damage evolution under cyclic loading conditions is modeled and presented in this paper. An elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle in terms of pseudo variables is applied to separately evaluate viscoelasticity and time-dependent damage growth in asphalt concrete. A microcrack growth law, which is commonly employed in linear viscoelastic fracture mechanics, is successfully used for describing the damage growth in the body. A constitutive equation in terms of stress and pseudo strain is first established for controlled-strain mode, and then transformed to controlled-stress constitutive equation by simply replacing stress and pseudo strain with pseudo stress and strain. The transformed constitutive equation in terms of pseudo stress satisfactorily predicts the mechanical behavior of asphalt concrete all the way up to failure under controlled-stress modes.

A growing need has developed in the United States to obtain more specific knowledge on the structural integrity of infrastructure due to aging service lives, heavier and more frequent loading conditions, and durability issues. This need has spurred extensive research in the area of structural health monitoring over the past few decades. Several structural health monitoring techniques have been developed that are capable of locating damage in structures using modal strain energy of mode shapes. Typically in the past, bending strain energy has been used in these methods since it is a dominant vibrational mode in many structures and is easily measured. Additionally, there may be cases, such as pipes, shafts, or certain bridges, where structures exhibit significant torsional behavior as well. In this research, torsional strain energy is used to locate damage. The damage index method is used on two numerical models; a cantilevered steel pipe and a simply-supported steel plate girder bridge. Torsion damage indices are compared to bending damage indices to assess their effectiveness at locating damage. The torsion strain energy method is capable of accurately locating damage and providing additional valuable information to both of the structures' behaviors.
Among the failure modes which can occur in tube hydroforming such as wrinkling, bursting or buckling, the bursting by local instability under excessive tensile stresses is irrecoverable phenomenon. Thus, the accurate prediction of bursting condition plays an important role in producing the successfully hydroformed part without any defects. As the classical forming limit criteria, strain-based forming limit diagram (FLD) has widely used to predict the failure in sheet metal forming. However, it is known that the FLD is extremely dependant on strain path throughout the forming process. Furthermore, The application of FLD to hydroforming process, where strain path is no longer linear throughout forming process, may lead to misunderstanding for fracture initiation. In this work, stress-based forming limit diagram (FLSD), which is strain path-independent and more general, was applied to prediction of forming limit in tube hydroforming. Combined with the analytical FLSD determined from plastic instability theory, finite element analyses were carried out to find out the state of stresses during hydroforming operation, and then FLSD is utilized as forming limit criterion. In addition, the approach is verified by a series of bulge tests in view of bursting pressure and shows a good agreement. Consequently, it is shown that the approach proposed in this paper will provide a feasible method to satisfy the increasing practical demands for judging the forming severity in hydroforming processes.

A damage detection algorithm using vibration modes is applied to the ring structures and the modal behaviors of the slightly asymmetric rings are examined. Mode shape change, MSER(modal strain energy ratio) and MCR(modal curvature ratio) are investigated to identify the locations of faults or damages The above fault detection parameters are calculated and compared by the finite element analysis on rings with designed local damages. Damages are modeled as a reduced stiffness in the analysis The results show that MSER and MCR can be proper parameters to detect local damages in the ring structures.
In this paper are presented the blade vibration characteristics at the starting conditions of the low pressure multistage axial compressor of heavy-duty 100 MW gas turbine. Vibration data have been collected through strain gauges during aerodynamic tests of the model compressor. The influences of operating modes at the starting conditions are investigated upon the compressor blade vibrations. The exciting mechanisms and features of blade vibrations are investigated at the surge, rotating stall, and buffeting flutter. The influences of operating modes upon blade dynamic stresses are investigated for the first and second stages. It is shown that a high dynamic stress peak of 120 MPa can occur in the first stage blades due to resonances with stall cell excitations or with inlet strut wake excitations at the stalled conditions.
Anchors have been commonly used to as foundation systems of the structures that require the uplift resistance. Recently anchors have been used in ocean sediment for mooring systems to stabilizeoffshore structures. In the saturated clayey soil however suction developed between the soil and andchor and affects the uplift capacity of anchor. To estimate the uplift capacity of the andchor accurately, the failure mechanisms of the andchor by the uplift force should also be correctly assumed. The uplift capacity is usually expressed in terms of breakout factors with respect to embedment ratio. In this paper, a two-dimensional plane strain numerical investigation into the vertical uplift capacity of a plate andchor in a clayey soil is described. The breakout factor against their corresponding values of embedment ratio was calculated and plotted along a single curve. The modes of failure mechanism at shallow and deep andchors are also presented.
The $\{10\bar{1}2\}$ twinning characteristics, such as active twin variants, volume fraction of twins with strain, twin morphology, twin texture and angle relationship between twins, were dependent on the activation mode (i.e., tension parallel to the caxis or compression perpendicular to the c-axis). The selection criterion of active twin variants was governed by the Schmid law. This activation of selected twin variants depending on the activation mode consequently caused a totally different plastic deformation behavior in two activation modes. The differences in the deformation characteristics, such as flow stress and work hardening rate, between both activation modes were explained in relation with activation stresses for slips and twinning, relative activities of twinning and slips during plastic deformation, grain refining effect by twin boundaries (Hall-Petch effect), and twinning-induced change in activities of slips.
This paper is concerned with the active vibration controller design for the grid structure based on the positive position feedback (PPF) and the strain rate feedback (SRF) control. A new control methodology by the combination of the PPF and SRF control can suppress all the modes of the structure theoretically and can be easily implemented with analog circuits. The underlying concept for the design of the new controller is that the SRF controller stabilizes the modes higher than the second mode and the PPF controller stabilizes the fundamental mode which is destabilized by the SRF controller. In order for the new controller to be implemented succesfully, the collocated control is necessary. To this end, the piezoceramic sensor and actuator are located as close as possible, thus realizing the nearly collocated control. The combined PPF and ARF controller proves its effectiveness by experiments.

A versatile flat shell element has been developed by combining a membrane element with drilling degree-of-freedom and a plate bending element. This element is formulated by the enhanced displacement field with the additional non-conforming displacement modes. Thus the element possesses six degrees-of-freedom (DOF) per node which permits an easy connection to other six DOF elements as well as the improvement of the element behavior. In plate bending part, this element is established by the combined use of the addition of non-conforming modes, the reduced (or selective) integration scheme, and the construction of the substitute shear strain fields. The achieved improvement may be attributable to the fact that the merits of these individual techniques are merged into the new element in a complementary manner. In membrane part, this element shows better membrane behavior as the nonconforming displacement mode is added to drilling mode.
