  • High temperature deformation behavior of a Ti-Al intermetallic compound has been investigated. Specimens with a near gamma and a lamella structures were obtained by performing heat treatment at 1200 and 1330$^{\circ}C$, respectively, for 24 hr and stabilized at 900$^{\circ}C$ for 4 hr followed by air cooling. A series of load relaxation tests has been conducted on these samples at temperatures ranging from 850 to 950$^{\circ}C$ to construct flow curves in the strain rate range from 10$\^$-6//s to 10$\^$-3//s. Strain hardening was observed even at the temperature of 950$^{\circ}C$ in both the near gamma and the lamella structures. Further aging treatment for 12 hr at test temperatures has found to cause no softening in both microstructures.

  • The purpose of this paper is to pursue a general method to determine both the flow stress of a material and the friction factor by ring compression test. The materials are assumed to obey the expanded n-power hardening rule including the strain-rate effect. Ring compression is simulated by the rigid-plastic finite element method to obtain the database used in determining the flow stress and friction factor. The Simulation is conducted for various strain hardening exponent, strain-rate sensitivity, friction factor, and compressing speed, as variables. It is assumed that the friction factor is constant during the compression process. To evaluate the compatibility of the database, experiments are carried out at room and evaluated temperature using specimens of aluminum 6061-T6 under dry and grease lubrication condition. It is shown that the proposed test method is useful and easy to use in determining the flow stress and the friction factor.

  • A new method of evaluating critical damage values of commercial materials is presented in this paper. The method is based on the previous study of the methodology [1] of acquisition of true stress-strain curves or flow stress curves over large strain from the tensile test in which the flow stress is described by the Hollomon law-like form, that is, by the strain dependent strength coefficient and the strain hardening exponent. The strain hardening exponent is calculated from the true strain at the necking point to meet the Considere condition. The strength coefficient is assumed to be constant before necking and represented by a piecewise linear function of strain after necking. With the predicted flow stress, a tensile test is simulated by a rigid-plastic finite element method with higher accuracy of less than 0.5% error between experiments and predictions. The instant when the fracture begins and thus the critical damage is obtained is determined by observing the stress variation at the necked region. It is assumed that the fracture due to damage begins when the pattern of stress around the necked region changes radically. The method is applied to evaluate the critical damage of a low carbon steel.

  • In this paper, plastic deformation behaviors of ESW105 and SCM435 steels are revealed by simulations and experiments. ESW105 is the special pre-heat-treated steel characterized by high initial yield strength and negligible strain-hardening behavior. The flow stresses of the two steels for large stain are calculated from tensile tests. Axial and lateral compressions of cylindrical bars are tested and simulated and the deformed shapes are compared to characterize the plastic deformation behaviors of the two materials. A forward extrusion process of a cylindrical bar is also simulated to reveal the difference. It has been shown that there are pretty much difference in plastic flow between ESW105 and SCM435 which causes from the difference in strain-hardening capability, implying that the experience-oriented design rules for common commercial materials may lead to failure in process design when the new material of ESW105 is applied without consideration of its plastic deformation behavior.

  • The plastic strain ratios(R-values) of low carbon steel sheets were determined by the automatic strain measurement method using two extensometers, the indirect photo method for the same tensile specimen during tensile test and the indirect method for the specimen after tensile test. The experimental results showed that the measured plastic strain ratios from the automatic strain measurement method using two extensometers coincided with those from the indirect photo method and the indirect method for all tensile specimens. In addition, the strain dependence of plastic strain ratios could be continuously recorded and the anisotropy of the strength coefficient, K, and strain hardening exponent, n, could be automatically calculated in three directions by computer through the use of two extensometers. The experimental results showed that the strain dependence of R-value was related to the anisotropy of strain hardening exponent in low carbon steel sheets.

  • A new, simple method to determine the die shape using a streamline in extrusion is presented. This method assumes that a billet deforms naturally to minimize the energy input for the given process condition. Then, an optimal die shape can be determined along a streamline. Extrusion operations with two types of materials, strain-hardening material and strain-rate hardening material, are examined using this method. Predictions with the proposed method are compared with those by the previous optimizing model to show its efficiency.

  • The Measurement method of the plastic strain ratio is various in Automotive sheet steel. In this paper, the measurement of the plastic strain are used two different methods, ASTM E 517 method and the automatic strain measurement tensile specimen during the tensile test, and compared the plastic strain ratios from the two methods. The experimental results showed that the measured plastic strain ratios from the automatic strain measurement method are coincide with that from the ASTM E 517 standard measurement in various specimens. Therefore, automatic strain measurement method by two extensometers shows good accuracy. Also, the strain dependance of plastic strain ratios could be recorded by the computer continuously and anisotropy of the strength coefficient, K, and strain hardening exponent, n ,could be compared with each direction automatically through the use of automatic strain measurement system.

  • An elasto-plastic constitutive model was proposed, in which the behavior at small-to-large strain level can be modeled. The proposed model is based on the anisotropic hardening description with the generalization of isotropic hardening rule and the total stress concept. From a mathematical approach it was proved that the model includes the previous successful models. The model was verified by a series of resonant column tests, torsional shear tests and triaxial tests, and the proposed model predicted small-to-large strain behavior more consistently and accurately than the hyperbolic model and the Ramberg-Osgood model for a weathered granitic soil. In addition, the nonlinearity under small strain condition was predicted appropriately for the torsional shear test results.

  • Due to the strength and biocompatibility requirement, the stainless steel SUS 316L is widely used for trauma internal fixation device. SUS 316L can be hardened and strengthened only by cold work. In this work, the material compression test is performed both in laboratory and computer simulation by a FEM analysis software DEFORM to correlate the hardness to strain. This data is then used for preform design and predict the hardness of the finish bone plate forging. Finally, we compared the hardness between the actual forging and computer analysis results. Although the predicted hardness from computer simulation. is 55HV higher than the final forging sample, we can get good compatibility on the hardening tendency of cold forging.

  • A study was made to investigate microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of ultra-fine grained (UFG) pure-Ti produced by equal channel angular (ECA) pressings. The deformed structures were analyzed by finite element method and transmission electron microscopy with the increment of straining. After 4 isothermal ECA pressings, initial coarse grains ($30{\mu}m$) were significantly refined to ${\sim}0.3{\mu}m$ with homogeneous distribution of microstructure which was resulted from $180^{\circ}$ rotation of the sample between pressings. UFG pure-Ti exhibited the considerable improvement in yield strength while losing strain hardening capacity as compared to coarse grained microstructure at ambient temperature, which was mainly attributed to ultra-fine grain microstructure with non-equilibrium grain boundaries.
