The key parameter that affects the consolidation process of soil is the coefficient of permeability. The common assumption in the consolidation analysis is that the coefficient of permeability is porosity-dependent. However, various authors suggest that the strain-dependency of the coefficient of permeability should also be taken into account. In this paper, we present results of experimental and numerical analyses, with an aim to determine the strain-dependency of the coefficient of permeability. We present in detail both the experimental procedure and the finite element formulation of the two-dimensional axisymmetric numerical model of the oedometer test (standard and modified). We perform a set of experimental standard and modified oedometer tests. We use these experimental results to validate our numerical model and to define the model input parameter. Finally, by combining the experimental and numerical results, we propose the expression for the strain-dependent coefficient of permeability.
This study was carried out to investigate the consolidation characteristics of the remolded clay by the oedometer and the constant rate of strain(CRS) consolidation tests. As the rate of strain increases, the settlement rapidly decreased. As the ratio of the sand in the specimen increases, its effect on the rate of strain to the settlement was reduced. As the effective stress increased, the void ratio decreased, while the rate of strain increased, it did not show a clear variation. The reduction of the void ratio was shown to be less than the oedometer test. The coefficient of vertical consolidation with effective stress showed very large variation around preconsolidation stress, but the rate of strain did not provide significant effects. The rate of strain with effective stress gradually decreased at all tests and mixed ratio of sand. The rate of strain at the constant rate of strain tests showed smaller than in the oedometer test. The coefficient of consolidation at the constant rate of strain tests showed much more increase than in the oedometer test. The ratio of the vertical coefficient of consolidation by the odometer and the constant rate of strain tests showed a large difference according to various tests method and mixing ratio. Therefore, it is recommended that careful attention should be paid to designing the soft ground improvement.
The total embankment settlement consists of three stages: the initial settlement, the primary consolidation settlement, and the secondary consolidation settlement. The total embankment settlement is largely controlled by the primary consolidation settlement, which is usually computed with numerical models that implement Biot's theory of consolidation. The key parameter that affects the primary consolidation time is the coefficient of permeability. Due to the complex stress and strain states in the foundation soil under the embankment, to be able to predict the consolidation time more precisely, aside from porosity-dependency, the strain-dependency of the coefficient of permeability should be also taken into account in numerical analyses. In this paper, we propose a two-dimensional plane strain numerical model of embankment primary consolidation, which implements Biot's theory of consolidation with both porosity-dependent and strain-dependent coefficient of permeability. We perform several numerical simulations. First, we demonstrate the influence of the strain-dependent coefficient of permeability on the computed results. Next, we validate our numerical model by comparing computed results against in-situ measurements for two road embankments: one near the city of Saga, and the other near the city of Boston. Finally, we give our concluding remarks.
In real design of the high & interim pressure turbine casing, it is one of the important things to figure out its thermal strain exactly. In this paper, with the establishment of the new concept for the heat transfer coefficient of steam that is one of the factors in analysis of the thermal stress for turbine casing, an analysis was done for one of the high & interim pressure turbine casings in operating domestically. The sensitivity analysis of the heat transfer coefficient of steam to the thermal strain of the turbine casing was done with a 2-D simple model. The analysis was also done with switching of the material properties of the turbine casing and resulted in that the thermal strain of the turbine casing was not so sensitive to the heat transfer coefficient of steam. On the basis of this, 3-D analysis of the thermal strain for the high and interim pressure turbine casing was done.

The constant rate of strain (CRS) consolidation test has been widely used to evaluate consolidation characteristics of soils instead of the standard Incremental Loading Test. In practical problems, after the ground improvement, the condition of the soil is over-consolidated. Therefore, it is important to determine the recompression indices and the coefficient of consolidation(or the coefficient of swelling) of unloading-reloading cycle to predict the settlement behavior. However, since standard testing procedures or studies related with strain rate are insufficient especially in unloading-reloading cycle, it is difficult to predict the settlement field behavior accurately from the CRS consolidation test results in spite of its lots of strengths. The several CRS consolidation tests were performed changing the unloading strain rate from 0.2%/hr to 20%/hr with vertical drainage condition using the reconstituted kaolinite sample. For the reconstituted kaolinite sample in CRS consolidation test, the recompression indices are insensitive to the strain rate. It is revealed that the coefficient of consolidation of reloading is affected by the developed pore pressure during unloading. Additionally, the test should be conducted in the positive pore pressure ratio range (3~15%) to obtain the reasonable coefficient of consolidation in the whole range(loading, unloading and reloading).
Low cycle fatigue test was performed by companion specimens method to compare the properties of cyclic strain for the weldments of controlled rolling steel CR60 and welding structural steel SM58Q. And the result does not showed any difference of low cycle fatigue life between weldments. Especially, the values of coefficient of cyclic plastic strain $C_{p}$ and exponent of cyclic plastic strain $K_{p}$ of heat affected zones of CR60 steel and SM58Q steel were same. And $C_{p}$ and $K_{p}$ of CR60 steel were equal to the values of weld it means a good combination between the base metal, the heat affected zone and the weld of CR60 steel.eel.eel.
This study investigates the dynamic magneto-mechanical behavior of magnetization-graded ferromagnetic materials Terfenol-D/FeCuNbSiB (MF). We measure the dynamic magneto-mechanical properties as a function of the DC bias magnetic field ($H_{dc}$). Our experimental results show that these dynamic magneto-mechanical properties are strongly dependent on the DC bias magnetic field. Furthermore, the dynamic strain coefficient, electromechanical resonance frequency, Young's moduli, and mechanical quality factor of Terfenol-D/FeCuNbSiB are greater than those of Terfenol-D under a lower DC bias magnetic field. The dynamic strain coefficient increases by a factor of between one and three, under the same DC bias magnetic field. In particular, the dynamic strain coefficient of Terfenol-D/FeCuNbSiB at zero bias achieves 48.6 nm/A, which is about 3.05 times larger than that of Terfenol-D. These good performances indicate that magnetization-graded ferromagnetic materials show promise for application in magnetic sensors.
This paper investigates the size dependent effect on the vibration analysis of a porous nanocomposite viscoelastic plate reinforced by functionally graded-single walled carbon nanotubes (FG-SWCNTs) by considering nonlocal strain gradient theory. Therefore, using energy method and Hamilton's principle, the equations of motion are derived. In this article, the effects of nonlocal parameter, aspect ratio, strain gradient parameter, volume fraction of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), damping coefficient, porosity coefficient, and temperature change on the natural frequency are perused. The innovation of this paper is to compare the effectiveness of each mentioned parameters individually on the free vibrations of this plate and to represent the appropriate value for each parameter to achieve an ideal nanocomposite plate that minimizes vibration. The results are verified with those referenced in the paper. The results illustrate that the effect of damping coefficient on the increase of natural frequency is significantly higher than the other parameters effect, and the effects of the strain gradient parameter and nonlocal parameter on the natural frequency increase are less than damping coefficient effect, respectively. Furthermore, the results indicate that the natural frequency decreases with a rise in the nonlocal parameter, aspect ratio and temperature change. Also, the natural frequency increases with a rise in the strain gradient parameter and CNTs volume fraction. This study can be used for optimizing the industrial and medical designs, such as automotive industry, aerospace engineering and water purification system, by considering ideal properties for the nanocomposite plate.
In the case of a wire with a very fine diameter during the multi-stage drawing process, the heterogeneity of the deformation in the radial direction tends to develop strongly as the amount of deformation is accumulated. It is known that the heterogeneity of deformation in the radial direction of the wire is closely related to the process parameters during the multi-stage drawing process. In this study, finite element analysis (FEA) was used to theoretically examine the effect of friction between the surface of the wire and the drawing die during the multi-stage drawing process of Cu-0.2wt%Mg alloy on the deformation heterogeneity developed in the radial direction of the wire. The distribution of effective strain, radial strain, circumferential strain, and shear strain developed in the radial direction of the wire during the multi-stage drawing process was analyzed while changing the friction coefficient, and the results were analyzed and compared for each path and position. The FEA results revealed that the shear strain developed in the radial direction of the wire during the multi-stage drawing process of Cu-0.2wt%Mg alloy showed the most non-uniform distribution and was also severely affected by the friction coefficient.

Consolidation tests under various deformation modes were performed to investigate the effect of deformation modes on the coefficient of consolidation in the normally consolidated clay in remolded and undisturbed clay. The degree of soil anisotropy was evaluated using cross-anisotropic elasticity theory suggested by Graham et al.(1983). Experimental results showed that the vertical compressibility was larger than the horizontal compressibility by $12{\sim}21%$ for the remolded clay and by $23{\sim}60%$ for the undisturbed clay, respectively. The results of a series of consolidation tests under the specific deformation modes showed that the coefficient of consolidation under 1 dimensional vertical strain condition was larger than that under 3 dimensional strain condition due to different deformation mode. Furthermore, the coefficient of consolidation under 1 dimensional vertical strain condition was larger than that under 1 dimensional horizontal strain condition by $40{\sim}60%$ in undisturbed clay, which clearly emphasized the significant effect of soil anisotropy on the rate of consolidation. Consequently, it can be concluded that the anisotropic deformation modes of soils, especially naturally deposited clays, should be taken into account for more accurate evaluation of the coefficient of consolidation.
