  • Soy and fermented soy are popular and recognized as a health food among Koreans. Since soy proteins are known to be protease resistant, even to pepsin and pancreatin, it is hypothesized that soy proteins may interact with the intestinal tract and trigger certain physiological reactions. To test this hypothesis, mice were fed diets supplemented with soy, Chunkukjang, or casein. The differentially expressed proteins were analyzed using 2-D gels and identified by peptide mass fingerprinting using mass spectrometry. The majority of the differentially expressed proteins could be functionally grouped into metabolic enzymes and calcium-binding proteins. The differential protein expression by the soy-fed groups was also verified based on a representative protein, tropomyosin, using a Western blotting analysis. In addition, the soy-fed groups exhibited a taller villi structure. Therefore, this study suggests that soy proteins can be an effective nutrient and physiological stimulant for the intestines.

  • It is said that the chinese medicine, Ginseng root has some effects on the central nervous system . Ginseng saponin was prepared from Ginseng methanol extract and its effect on general behavioral activity was studied in rats. Each experimental group was composed of 8 rats. The behavioral activity of rats was observed in terms of 7 components i.e. sleeping, lying, grooming, rearing, walking, eating and drinking. In each group, total duration of behavior-observation was 2 hours, which were devided into four 30 min-intervals. The behavior-observation was done 10 times for each interval, so total number of observation was 40 times throughout 2 hours. Ginseng sapoain showed central nervous system stimulant action in reduced sleeping component and in increased activity components. From the results of this study, it is suggested that Ginseng saponin inhibits the extrapyramidal action of chlorpromazine.

  • Obstructive sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that predominantly affects adult men than women. However, the prevalence in women increases with menopause dramatically. Menopause has long been described as a risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea. Recent large well-designed population studies support that menopause increases the risk for sleep-disordered breathing. The mechanism of that hypothesis is not yet clear. But, the decline in progesterone has been thought to influence the development of obstructive sleep apnea because progesterone is a respiratory stimulant and plays a protective role against sleep apnea. Increased visceral obesity and hypertension as major symptoms of metabolic syndrome are also associated with menopause and place women at increased risk for obstructive sleep apnea and other serious health problem. Hormone replacement therapy has been associated with a lower prevalence of sleep apnea. But, relative risk and benefits of hormone replacement therapy compared with other treatment options will require thorough consideration for each individual woman. Finally, attention should be drawn to the need for obstructive sleep apnea evaluation in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women.

  • Ginseng is one of the most popular herbs throughout the world. Ginsenosides, the active constituent of ginseng, have been suggested to have diverse effects on cardiovascular, immune, mood and endocrine systems as well as cognitive performance. Many studies have revealed the beneficial effect of ginseng on cognition in normal human subjects and in animals. Recently, a few studies showing effects of ginseng on the patients with Alzheimer's disease have been reported. However, the underlying mechanism is not clear at this stage and it is still obscure whether ginseng is cognitive stimulant or disease modifying agent. More detailed studies exploring the relationship between clinical efficacy and pathophysiology are required.

  • The aim of this paper is to evaluate the use of non-stimulants, including atomoxetine, bupropion and modafinil, as alternative approaches to the treatment of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. A comprehensive review of the empirically based literature regarding the efficacy and the safety of the non-stimulants was performed. There is a large and increasing body of data supporting the efficacy and the safety of non-stimulants. Although the treatment effect sizes for non-stimulants may be smaller than those for stimulants, non-stimulants alone have been shown to be effective in the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder as well as several comorbidities. These results suggest that non-stimulants are effective in the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Further studies are needed to improve our understanding of alternative pharmacological medications in the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

  • Functional constipation is regarded as a long-standing symptomatic manifestation of abnormal defecation expressed by either a reduced frequency of bowel movements and /or an altered act of evacuation. Patients with constipation can be treated with laxatives, diets and regular habits. Thorough evaluation of functional constipation is considered in those in whom conservative treatment with dietary advice and use of laxatives fails. Patients with normal colonic transit and normal anorectal function may only need reassurance, education and dietary advice with fiber supplementation. For constipated patients in whom such treatment modalities fail, laxatives including bulk-forming and osmotic agents may be used Although most laxatives, if used intermittently, are relatively safe, they must be chosen bearing in mind possible side effects, patient compliance and their action mechanisms. A subgroup of patients with slow transit through the colon ay be unresponsive to conventional laxatives, and, in these subjects, a trial with enteroprokinetics and sometimes stimulant laxatives should be attempted. This article presents our view of the assessment and pharmacologic treatment of functional constipation.

  • Vibrio vulnificus Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was extracted, performed chemical analysis, tested its biological activities, and compared to those of Escherichia coli LPS and Salmonella typhimurium LPS. The lethal activity of V. vulnificus LPS was 138.6138.6 mg/kg in mouse, but this was lower than thowe of E. coli LPS (56.3 mg/kg) and S. typhimurium LPS (37.5 mg/kg). The result of fatty acid analysis showed that V. vulnificus LPS had more saturated fatty acid than E. coli LPS and S. typhimurium LPS. Above results indicated that V. vulnificus LPS did not have much effect on the lethality. The results of biological responses of enzymes and blood cells by LPSs showed that V. vulnificus LPS had slightly greater activity than E. coli LPS and S. typhimurium LPS. V. vulnificus LPS was recommendavle for stimulant on interferon induction because of adequate stimulation and safety for host and cell lines.

  • N1 and N2 gross neural action potentials were measured from the round window of the guinea pig cochlea at the onset of the acoustic stimuli. N1-N2 audiograms were made by means of regulating stimulant intensities in order to produce constant N1-N2 potentials as criteria for different input tone pip frequencies. The lowest threshold was measured with an input tone pip I5 dB SPL in intensity and 12 KHz in frequency when the animal was in normal physiological condition. The procedure of experimental measurements is explained in detail. This experimental approach is very useful for the investigation of the Cochlear function. Both noN1inear and active functions of the Cochlea can be monitored by N1-N2 audiograms.

  • In this research, the possibility of wasted refractory powder pulverized from refractory block as an expansive admixture and additional alkaline stimulant for class two and three blast furnace slag cements (BSC) was assessed with its high content of free CaO or free MgO. As the replacement ratios of wasted refractory powder and blast furnace slag were increased, flow and air content were decreased, while unit volume weight was increased under same conditions. Compressive strength of mortar was increased with increased replacement ratio of wasted refractory powder, especially, in the case of class three BSC, the highest compressive strength was obtained when wasted refractory powder was replaced 10 %.
