Structural failure due to seismic pounding between two adjacent buildings is one of the major concerns in the context of structural damage. Pounding between adjacent structures is a commonly observed phenomenon during major earthquakes. When modelling the structural response, stiffness of impact spring elements is considered to be one of the most important parameters when the impact force during collision of adjacent buildings is calculated. Determining valid and realistic stiffness values is essential in numerical simulations of pounding forces between adjacent buildings in order to achieve reasonable results. Several impact model stiffness values have been presented by various researchers to simulate pounding forces between adjacent structures. These values were mathematically calculated or estimated. In this study, a linear spring impact element model is used to simulate the pounding forces between two adjacent structures. An experimental model reported in literature was adopted to investigate the effect of different impact element stiffness k on the force intensity and number of impacts simulated by Finite Element (FE) analysis. Several numerical analyses have been conducted using SAP2000 and the collected results were used for further mathematical evaluations. The results of this study concluded the major factors that may actualise the stiffness value for impact element models. The number of impacts and the maximum impact force were found to be the core concept for finding the optimal range of stiffness values. For the experimental model investigated, the range of optimal stiffness values has also been presented and discussed.
An analytical solution has been developed for the impact response of delaminated composite plates. The analysis is based on an expansion of loads, displacements, and rotations in a Fourier series which satisfies the end boundary conditions of simply-supported. The analytical formulation adopts the Laplace transformation technique, requiring a linearization of contact deformation. In this paper, the nonlinear contact stiffness is replaced by a linearized stiffness, to provide an estimate of the additional compliance due to contact area deformation effects. It has been shown that defects such as delaminations may be modeled as spring stiffness. The change in the impact characteristics as this spring stiffness has been investigated theoretically. Predicted impact responses using analytical solution are compared with the numerical ones from the 3-D non-linear finite element model. From the results, it is shown that analytical solution was found to be reliable for predicting the impact response.
The stability and dynamic performance of a flapper-nozzle servo valve depend on several factors, such as the motion of the armature component and the deformation of the spring tube. As the only connection between the armature component and the fixed end, the spring tube plays a decisive role in the dynamic response of the entire system. Aiming at predicting the vibration characteristics of the servo valves to combine them with the control algorithm, an innovative dynamic stiffness based on a distributed parameter model (DPM) is proposed that can reflect the dynamic deformation of the spring tube and a suitable discrete method is applied according to the working condition of the spring tube. With the motion equation derived by DPM, which includes the impact of inertia, damping, and stiffness force, the mathematical model of the spring tube dynamic stiffness is established. Subsequently, a suitable program for this model is confirmed that guarantees the simulation accuracy while controlling the time consumption. Ultimately, the transient response of the spring tube is also evaluated by a finite element method (FEM). The agreement between the simulation results of the two methods shows that dynamic stiffness based on DPM is suitable for predicting the transient response of the spring tube.
The air spring is widely used in various fields such as a suspension system and an anti-vibration system because the natural frequency is kept constant regardless of the change in the load, spring constant is easy to change, and, vibration and shock isolation performance are excellent. The purpose of this study is to derive a nonlinear governing equation of an air spring, to analyze the effect of the various parameters on the dynamic stiffness of the air spring, and, to suggest a more efficient design method of an air spring system. In order to do so, this study investigates the impact of all the parameters that could affect the dynamic stiffness of the air spring while changing the excitation amplitude and the frequency with a developed governing equation.
This work evaluates the influence of negative stiffness on the performances of various vehicle suspension systems, and proposes a re-centering negative stiffness device (NSD). The re-centering NSD consists of a passive magnetic negative stiffness spring and a positioning shaft with a re-centering function. The former produces negative stiffness control forces, and the latter prevents the amplification of static spring deflection. The numerical simulations reveal that negative stiffness can improve the ride comfort of a vehicle without affecting its road holding abilities for either passive or semi-active suspension systems. In general, the improvement degree of ride comfort increases as negative stiffness increases. For passive suspension system, negative stiffness brings in negative stiffness feature in the control forces, which is helpful for the ride comfort of a vehicle. For semi-active suspensions, negative stiffness can alleviate the impact of clipped damping in semi-active dampers, and thus the ride comfort of a vehicle can be improved.
First, three point bending analysis for the inclined press door impact beam was carried out to investigate inclination angle effect on the maximum strength with varying support distance. Next, for the system model with spring elements representing body stiffness at door mounting area, the bending structural behavior of impact beam mounted on vehicle was estimated. The mounting distance and inclination angle were changed and the beam bending buckling strength was presumed at the head displacement below which spring stiffness change has little effect on the load. Finally strength ratio to predict the bending buckling strength of impact beam mounted on vehicle from three point bending maximum strength of fixed support distance was suggested.
Objective: The human body is often modelled as a spring-mass system. Lower extremity stiffness has been considered to be one of key factor in the performance enhancement of running, jumping, and hopping involved sports activities. There are several different classification of lower extremity stiffness consisting of vertical stiffness, leg stiffness, joint stiffness, as well as muscle and tendon stiffness. The primary purpose of this paper was to review the literature and describe different stiffness models and discuss applications of stiffness models while engaging in sports activities. In addition, this paper provided a current update of the lower extremity literature as it investigates the relationships between lower extremity stiffness and both functional performance and injury. Summary: Because various methods for measuring lower extremity stiffness are existing, measurements should always be accompanied by a detailed description including type of stiffness, testing method and calculation method. Moreover, investigator should be cautious when comparing lower extremity stiffness from different methods. Some evidence highlights that optimal degree of lower extremity stiffness is required for successful athletic performance. However, the actual magnitude of stiffness required to optimize performance is relatively unexplored. Direct relationship between lower extremity stiffness and lower extremity injuries has not clearly been established yet. Overall, high stiffness is potentially associate risk factors of lower extremity injuries although some of the evidence is controversial. Prospective injures studies are necessary to confirm this relationship. Moreover, further biomechanical and physiological investigation is needed to identify the optimal regulation of the lower limb stiffness behavior and its impact on athletic performance and lower limb injuries.
Door impact beam plays a key role in minimizing the occupant injury within the side impacted vehicle through preventing intrusion of the impacting vehicle. Steel pipe type door impact beam has been widely adopted since it has simple structure and the overall strength is easily determined according to the pipe size. The brackets welded at pipe ends connect the door impact beam and the door panels by spot welds. In this study, first, the effect of pipe thickness, bracket thickness and door mounting stiffness was respectively analyzed. Next, application of the tailor rolled pipe was examined and several alterations of the bracket mounting method were considered. Application of tailor rolled pipes with superior bracket mounting method showed remarkable strength enhancement and weight reduction possibility in comparison with the current door impact beam.
