This paper presents a new nonlinear analysis algorithm which uses the equivalent nodal load for the element stiffness. The equivalent nodal load represents the influence of the stiffness change such as the addition of elements, the deletion of elements, and/or the partial change of element stiffness. The nonlinear analysis of structures using the equivalent load improves the efficiency very much because the inverse of the structural stiffness matrix, which needs a large amount of computation to calculate, is reused in each loading step. In this paper, the concept of nonlinear analysis using the equivalent load for the element stiffness is described and some numerical examples are provided to verify it.
Frictional characteristics with the change of loading method and normal stiffness at dry sliding surfaces were experimentally and theoretically evaluated in this study. For the study, a ball-on-disk typed test rig was built and implemented, which allowed a proper selection of loading mechanism and normal stiffness of the test rig. Loading method were varied from dead weight to pneumatic cylinder and spring loading, and the normal stiffness was varied by a spring of different stiffness. Test results showed that frictional characteristics at various loading methods were different even though the operating variables were the same. Discrepancy in the frictional characteristics, such as coefficient of friction and fluctuation in the normal load, were explained by the change in dynamic parameters of the test rigs. Results also showed that coefficient of friction, which defines as a ratio of frictional force divided a normal load, could be differently evaluated in the calculation when fluctuation in the normal load was significant.
Velocity change of crashed vehicle has been applied to assess the safety of passenger and degree of impact severity widely. In this study, 1 D crash analysis and 2 D crash analysis were performed for velocity change of crashed vehicle with HVE 2D, and factors used for these analysis are weight, C.G, roll resistance, stiffness and brake force which influence on velocity change of crashed vehicle. According to results, the velocity change of crashed vehicle was influenced by weight, center of gravity stiffness and brake force but not roll resistance.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to provide an effective method of exercise therapy for patients with cervicogenic headache. Methods : The subjects were divided into the following two groups according to the intervention received: cervical stretch exercise (n=15, control group) cervix-stabilizing exercise (n=15, experimental group) tone (Hz) and stiffness (N/m) of the suboccipital and upper trapezius muscles were measured. T1 slope angle and neck tilt angle were measured. After the exercise program intervention, a greater amount of change in muscle tone and stiffness of suboccipital and upper trapezius muscles was found in the experimental group, as compared to the control group. Greater amount of change in posture was found in the experimental group, as compared to the control group (p<0.05). Results : After the exercise program intervention, a greater amount of change in muscle tone and stiffness of suboccipital and upper trapezius muscles was found in the experimental group, as compared to the control group. Greater amount of change in posture was found in the experimental group, as compared to the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion : The neck-stabilizing exercise were shown to be effective in decreasing the tone of the cervical muscles by stabilizing the cervical bone and improving muscle activity, and in improving the posture by decreasing muscle tone and stiffness.
A modal parameter based damage sensitive feature (DSF) is defined to mimic the relative change in any diagonal element of the stiffness matrix of a model of a structure. The damage assessment is performed in a statistical pattern recognition framework using empirical complementary cumulative distribution functions (ECCDFs) of the DSFs extracted from measured operational vibration response data. Methods are discussed to perform probabilistic structural health assessment with respect to the following questions: (a) "Is there a change in the current state of the structure compared to the baseline state?", (b) "Does the change indicate a localized stiffness reduction or increase?", with the latter representing a situation of retrofitting operations, and (c) "What is the severity of the change in a probabilistic sense?". To identify a range of normal structural variations due to environmental and operational conditions, lower and upper bound ECCDFs are used to define the baseline structural state. Such an approach attempts to decouple "non-damage" related variations from damage induced changes, and account for the unknown environmental/operational conditions of the current state. The damage assessment procedure is discussed using numerical simulations of ambient vibration testing of a bridge deck system, as well as shake table experimental data from a 4-story steel frame.

This paper describes the prediction of eigenfrequencies due to changes in stiffness and mass in the connection area of the lap joint beam in terms of linear and torsional stiffness as well as connection length. The sensitivities of mass and stiffness in the finite element model were derived by using the first-order differential and algebraic equation and were thereafter applied to obtain new natural frequencies that were compared with theoretical exact solutions. Newly predicted natural frequencies due to only a change in stiffness were in relatively good agreement with those in lower modes for rigid joints, while further investigation was needed for flexible joints. On the other hand, only the change in mass resulted in a large discrepancy in the flexible joint case. It may be strongly anticipated that this study will provide a useful tool for estimating modal parameters by change in any design variable, such as the structural dimension, material property, or connection type for a large-scale structure, even though the proposed methodology is currently limited to a jointed beam.
Air foil bearing supports the rotating journal using hydrodynamic force generated at thin air film. The bearing performances, stiffness, damping coefficient and load capacity, depend on the rotating speed and the performance of the elastic foundation, bump foil. The main focus of this study is to decide the dynamic performance of corrugated bump foil, structural stiffness and Coulomb damping caused by friction between bump foil and top foil/bump foil and housing. Structural stiffness is determined by the bump shape (bump height, pitch and bump thickness), dry-friction, and interacting force filed up to fixed end. So, the change of the characteristics was considered as the parameters change. The air foil bearing specification for analysis follows the general size; diameter 38.1 mm and length 38.1 mm (L/D=1.0). The results show that the stiffness at the fixed end is more than the stiffness at the free end, Coulomb damping is more at the fixed end due to the small displacement, and two dynamic characteristics are dependent on each other.

A damage in structure alters its dynamic characteristics. The change is characterized by changes in the modal parameter, i.e., modal frequencies, modal damping value and mode shape associated with each modal frequency. Changes also occur in some of the structural parameters; namely, the mass, damping, stiffness matrices of the structure. In this paper, evaluation of changes in stiffness matrix of a structure is presented as a method not only for identifying the presence of the damage but also locating the damage. It is shown that changed stiffness matrix can be accurately estimated a sensitivity coefficient matrix derived from modifying mode shapes, First, with 4 story shear structure models, the effect of presence of damage in a structure on its stiffness matrix is studied. By using these analytical model, the effectiveness of using change of stiffness matrix in detecting and locating damages is demonstrated. To validate the predicted changing stiffness and its location, the obtained results are compared to the reanalysis result which shows good agreement.
This study investigated the change in stiffness and deflection of a scaffold working plate caused by damage to a cross-beam in the plate. Experiments were conducted considering various load and damage conditions of cross-beams. A cross-beam falling off from the working plate was considered damaged. The load-displacement curves of specimens at the center of the uniform load showed that the working plate stiffness decreased by 14.66%-1.89%, depending on the load interval due to the damage of one cross-beam. A reduction in the stiffness of 33.94%-40.76% resulted from the damage of two cross-beams. Moreover, the displacement increased by an average of 25% when one cross-beam was damaged and an average of 65% when two cross-beams were damaged. Therefore, damage to the cross-beam in the working plate can potentially cause accidents and harm workers. As the load increases, the risk of an accident due to the aforementioned damage also increases because the stiffness remarkably decreases with the load increase. Further, the damage to the cross-beam mainly reduces the stiffness but increases the displacement rather than the strength of the working scaffold plate.
