A Study on Numerical Solution Methods in Stiff Constrained Mechanical Systems (강성 구속기계계의 해법에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, integration methods for stiff constrained mechanical systems are studied to analyze dynamic response of the stiff mechanical system efficiently. The stiff, non-stiff systems are identified by using eigenvalues of the Jacobian of the systems. To integrate both stiff system and non-stiff system efficiently a new switching method between the non-stiff differential equation solver and the stiff differential equation solver is presented.

An Experimental Study of Flexible-Stiff Mixed System of High Yield Ratio-High Strength Steel for the Practical Use (고항복비-고강도강의 유강혼합구조 시스템 적용에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This paper summarizes the test results of the flexible-stiff mixed system for the effective use of high-strength steel. Steel with a high degree of strength and performance is being increasingly required as buildings get larger and taller. High-strength steels cannot be used for many applications, though, because they have a number of defects. For instance, they have a high yield ratio, a small strain in maximum stress, and equal Young's modulus compared to mild steels. A new structural system is needed to effectively use high-strength steels with some defects. This paper proposes the flexible-stiff mixed system for the effective use of high-strength steels with high yield ratios. The possibility of using the system is discussed through the test of flexible-stiff mixed columns with high-strength steels. The main variable of the specimens is the yield displacement ratio, including both the force ratio and the stiffness ratio. The proper yield displacement ratio is proposed by adopting the flexible-stiff mixed system. The test results showed that the proposed flexible-stiff mixed system has a high capacity for energy absorption and the highest capacity for energy absorption when the yield displacement ratio of the flexible element to the stiff element ranges from 2.7 to 3.3.

  • Purpose: Management of the stiff elbow by arthroscopic procedure is an effective but technically demanding. Our purpose was to review the specific arthroscopic maneuver which can be useful for the stiff elbow. Materials and Methods: A stiff elbow that is refractory to conservative treatment can be treated surgically to remove soft tissue or bony blocks to motion. The olecranon or coronoid osteophyte and loose bodies have been removed arthroscopically with good results and rare complications. Results and Conclusion: For the successful arthroscopic management of elbow stiffness, it need to knowledge and skills for debride contracted tissue and preserve vital anatomic structure.

Lower extremity stiffness over different landing methods during hopping (호피 시 착지방법에 따른 하지 강성도)

  • The purpose of the present study was to analyze the lower stiffness over the difference between soft and stiff landings during hopping. Five male subjects performed hopping on two legs at 2.5 Hz. During the experiments, 3D motion capture system was used to obtain the kinematic data and two force plates were synchronized to calculate the kinetic data. We determined lower extremity stiffness of the knee and ankle from kinetic and kinematic data. Leg stiffness was approximately 1.2-times significantly higher in stiff landing than in soft landing_ There was no significant difference in knee joint stiffness between soft and stiff landings. Ankle joint stiffness was approximately 1.34-times significantly higher in stiff landing than in soft landing. These results suggest that humans adjust lower extremity stiffness over the comparison of two different landing methods we evaluated.

  • This paper presents second derivative generalized extended backward differentiation formulas (SDGEBDFs) based on the second derivative linear multi-step formulas of Cash [1]. This class of second derivative linear multistep formulas is implemented as boundary value methods on stiff problems. The order, error constant and the linear stability properties of the new methods are discussed.

  • For an initial value problem, using a weighted average between two adjacent approximates, we propose a simple one-step method based on the Euler method. This method is useful for solving stiff initial value problem, even when the step size is not very small. Moreover, it can be seen that the proposed method with some selected weights results in improved approximation errors.

  • The interest in implicit-explicit (IMEX) integration methods has emerged as an alternative for dealing in a computationally cost-effective way with stiff ordinary differential equations arising from practical modeling problems. In this paper, we introduce implicit-explicit second derivative linear multi-step methods (IMEX SDLMM) with error control. The proposed IMEX SDLMM is based on second derivative backward differentiation formulas (SDBDF) and recursive SDBDF. The IMEX second derivative schemes are constructed with order p ranging from p = 1 to 8. The methods are numerically validated on well-known stiff equations.

  • The stiff top layer in a soil profile, which can happen in winter, may change the isolation effect of the wave barrier. The research scope of this paper is the investigation of the propagation of surface waves in layered soil with a stiff layer on its top, and the isolation effect of the solid stiff wave barrier. The investigations have been performed numerically by the Boundary-Element Method as a two-dimensional problem. A strip foundation vibrated harmonically in vertical direction was considered as the vibration source. Three soil profiles, a homogeneous half-space, two profiles with different thickness of stiff top layer, with two different types of wave barriers were investigated. The profiles with a stiff top layer show considerable reductions of the amplitude of the vibration in comparison to the homogeneous soil profile. The layered soil profiles with a stiff top layer do not show wave propagation velocities as high as they are expected from the material properties. Furthermore the vibration amplitudes in a frozen soil are much smaller with distance than in a non-frozen soil.

  • The headache has various causes and symptoms in clinic. Therefore The headache and the stiff neck also can found in many articles of Shanghanlun(傷寒論) On Cold Damage. In the past, many doctors classified the headache and the stiff neck according to their own theories, and published some Shanghan books(傷寒書). In this study, I select ten Shanghan books which classified the headache and the stiff neck in table of contents, and compared with the articles of and , the first books of Shanghanlun(傷寒論) to found meanings of them. As a result, the Osuyutang(吳茱萸湯) was the most quoted herb medicine of . The second was Jowisunggitang(調胃承氣湯) and Sosunggitang(小承氣湯), the group of Sunggitang(承氣湯類). Mahwangtang(麻黃湯) and Gyejitang(桂枝湯) are substituted as Ganghwalchunghwatang(羌活沖和湯) in for simply prescribe medicine, or even not mentioned as in .   • Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based electronic devices are widely used for various applications in large area electronics, biomedical wearable interfaces and implantable circuitry where flexibility and/or stretchability are required. A few fabrication methods of electronic devices directly on PDMS substrate have been reported. However, it is well known that micro-cracks appear in the metal layer and in the lithography pattern on a PDMS substrate. To solve the above problems, a few studies for fabrication of stiff platform on PDMS substrate have been reported. Thin-film islands of a stiff region are fabricated on an elastomeric substrate, and electronic devices are fabricated on these stiff islands. When the substrate is stretched, the deformation is mainly accommodated by the substrate, and the stiff islands and electronic devices experience relatively small strains. Here, we report a new method to achieve stiff islands structures on an elastomeric substrate at a various thickness, as the platform for stretchable electronic devices. The stiff islands were defined by conventional photolithography on a stress-free elastomeric substrate. This technique can provide a practical strategy for realizing large-area stretchable electronic circuits, for various applications such as stretchable display or wearable electronic systems.
