  • This study was carried out to determine the effect of sowing time on the flowering, growth and yield of Schizonepeta tenuifolia Briquet. Emergence and flowering dates in the sowing time from March 30 to April 30 were earlier than those of the other sowing times. In the sowing time from March 30 to April 30, length and diameter of main stem, number of node per main stem, number of branch per plant and fresh, and dry weight of stem were greater than those of the other sowing times. Yield components such as ear length, main stem length and diameter, branches per plant, number of node and ears per plant, yield of stem in fresh and dry were the highest at the sowing time from March 30 to April 30. Optimum sowing time of Schizonepeta tenuifolia Briquet were shown to be from March 30 to April 30 in southern areas of Korea.

  • This study was conducted to elucidate the effect of physical properties of soil in nursery bed with different densities on growth of ginseng seedling. Stem length, leaf length and leaf width of ginseng seedling showed the decreasing tendency with increasing the hardness of the nursery soil. Fresh root weight per seedling and number of available seedlings were increased significantly with decrease of the soil hardness. For solid, liquid phases, bulk density and hardness of soil, negative correlations were shown in stem length, leaf length, leaf width, root weight per seeding, and number t of available seedlings. On the other hand, gas phase, air permeability and porosity of soil had positive correlations with stem length, leaf length, leaf width, root weight per seedling and number of available seedlings. Key words Yang-Jik nursery, ginseng seedling, soil physical properties.

  • These studies were carried out to obtain useful information about the effective selection of vegetable perilla by estimating the genetic relationships between the heritabilities and the genetic correlations of quantitative traits among eight agronomic characters from 91 perilla varieties. The positive correlations were showed among characters such as between leaf weight and leaf size, leaf weight and leaf length, leaf weight and leaf width, leaf weight and plant height, leaf weight and stem diameter, leaf size and leaf length, leaf size and leaf width, leaf size and plant height, leaf size and stem diameter , leaf length and leaf width, leaf length and plant height, leaf length and stem diameter, leaf width and plant height, leaf width and stem diameter, plant height and stem diameter, plant height and the number of internodes per plant, and the number of internodes per plant and the number of leaves per plant. Heritabilities were high as from 0.7311 to 0.9112 among leaf weight, leaf size, leaf length, leaf width, plant height, stem diameter, and the number of internodes per plant.

  • Ninety-four collections of domestic ginger were evaluated for plant hight, leaf number, stem number, leaf length and width, rhizome yield per plant revealed good variability in stem number and rhizome yield per plant. Moderate variation was observed in plant hight, leaf number, leaf length, leaf width and stem diameter. Rhizome yield per plant was positively correlated with six characters, and leaf number, plant height and stem diameter were positive significant correlation with rhizome yield per plant. Path coefficient analysis indicated that stem number, followed by leaf number, stem diameter, had maximum direct effects on rhizome yield per plant. Maximum indirect effect was observed in case of plant height through leaf number. The indirect effects of leaf length and leaf width through leaf number, and plant height, leaf length and leaf width through stem diameter were also observed. From the selection point of view, the characters like plant height, stem number and leaf number per clump may be considered suitable in choosing a good genotype.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the correlation of agronomic characters, their path coefficients in 2, 3 and 4-year old ginseng plants, and to provide a useful information for ginseng breeding. Correlation coefficients between stem fen변h, number of leaves and number of Iraflets in 2-year age, and stem diameter and leaf length in 3-year age showed highly significant correlation with number of fruits and root weight in 4-year age. The path coefficient analysis indicated that stem length and number of leaflets might give indirect effects on root weight regardless of plant age. On the other hand, stem length and number of leaflets in 2-year age and, stem diameter and leaf length in 3-year age showed direct effects on root weight in 4-year old ginseng. These results may be used for selection of high-yielding ginseng plants. Key words Selection information, correlation and path coefficient analysis.

  • In order to clarify the relationship between the characters and the influence of each character on the yield of perilla, correlation coefficients and path coefficients were calculated. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. A highly significant positive correlation was found between stem length and stem diameter, number of pods per plant, stem weight, respectively. Number of internodes showed also significant positive correlation , with number of pods per plant, stem weight, respectively as well as the relationship between number of valid branches and number of pods per plant. On the other hand, a significant negative correlation was appeared between number of valid branches and l000-grain weight as well as the relationship between number of pods per plant and l000-grain weight. 2. It seemed to be clear that stem weight, number of pods per plant, l000-grain weight, number of valid branches and stem diameter have direct and positive influence on the yield of perilla. 3. Indirect influence was observed between stem length and stem weight, between number of valid branches and number of pods per plant, and between number of pods per plant and stem weight, respectively. 4. It may be concluded that the yield of perilla is positively correlated with stem length, number of valid branches, number of pods per plant, l000-grain weight and stem weight.

  • A comparative anatomy between the secondary xylem in the root and stem of Korean Betulaceae, including 5 genera and 6 species, was carried out in this study. Anatomical characteristics of the secondary xylem in the root and stem are as follows: Diameter of vessel and fiber is wider in the root than the stem, while the number of vessel and fiber per unit area is fewer in the root than the stem. The length of vessel element is longer in the stem than the root, whereas length of the fiber is longer in the root than the stem. Number of bar in the perforation plate is more in the stem than the root, and the angle of perforation plate is broader in the root than the stem. Number of ray per unit area is more in the root than the stem.

  • Thirty eight varieties with high uniformity and clearance in grain quality among 70 colored soybeans collected from nation-wide provinces were investigated for their seed morphological and agronomic traits. As for seed morphological traits, grain volumetric size, grain weight, grain length, grain thickness, . hilum length and width were studied on the tendency of statistical dispersion and variations. As a result, four groups could be classified on the basis of 100 grains weight, so as small, medium, large, and super large groups, Also, as for agronomic traits, among others, the tendency of setting in flowering date, maturing date, yield components, and stem weight, stem length were studied on the basis of statistical inter-relationships between above mentioned characteristics. From the above, bigger variations were detected in weighing characters of soybean plants than in duration characters. And the flowering and maturing days showed significant relationships to the stem length, stem weight, also stem length and stem weight to the grain yield.

  • seeding rates(1.5,2.0,3.0 and 3.5$\ell$/10a). There were no differences in the yield components such as length of stem and ear diameter of stem number of branch, internode and ear, and yield of fresh and dry stem between the seeding methods with drilling and broadcasting, but yield components such as length of stem and ear, diameter of stem, number of branch, internode and ear, and yield of fresh and dry stem increased with seeding rates of from 2.5$\ell$ /10a to 3.5$\ell$/10a. Therefore potimum rates and methods of sowing were from 2.5$\ell$/10a to 3.5$\ell$/10a with seeding at the drilling and broadcasting.

  • Tracheid length and width, microfibril angle, compressive, bending, and impact strengths between the south and north sides of stem pith in Larix kaemferi were measured. Sample trees were 30 years old which had planted in the central region of Korea. In general, there were no difference in the tracheid length and width, microfibril angle, and strengths between the two sides. And no difference in tangential shrinkage and strengths between the two sides was thought to be due to identical microfibril angle between the two sides.
