고려인삼(Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer)의 년차간 형질상관 및 경로계수 분석 (The Correlation of Agronomic Characters and Path Coefficient Analysis in Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the correlation of agronomic characters, their path coefficients in 2, 3 and 4-year old ginseng plants, and to provide a useful information for ginseng breeding. Correlation coefficients between stem fen변h, number of leaves and number of Iraflets in 2-year age, and stem diameter and leaf length in 3-year age showed highly significant correlation with number of fruits and root weight in 4-year age. The path coefficient analysis indicated that stem length and number of leaflets might give indirect effects on root weight regardless of plant age. On the other hand, stem length and number of leaflets in 2-year age and, stem diameter and leaf length in 3-year age showed direct effects on root weight in 4-year old ginseng. These results may be used for selection of high-yielding ginseng plants. Key words Selection information, correlation and path coefficient analysis.

Top 50 cited articles on dental stem cell research

  • Objectives: Citation analysis provides a unique insight into how scientific interests and research trends have changed over time. The aim of this study was to report on the 50 top-cited papers in dental stem cell research using the Science Citation Index Expanded provided by the Web of Science database to determine the academic importance of each contribution. Materials and Methods: After the screening, article title and type, total citations and citations per year, publication journal, publication year, first and senior authors, country of origin, institution, and university of reprint author were documented for the 50 top-cited articles in dental stem cell research. Keyword analysis was performed to determine which keywords were most/least popular. Results: Top 50-cited articles were cited between 179 to 2,275 times. The majority of papers were published in 2008 and originated from the United States with the highest contribution from the National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research. Journal of Dental Research published the highest number of top-cited articles, followed by Stem Cells and Journal of Endodontics. The greatest number of articles was published by two individual authors, Shi and Gronthos. Among 197 unique keywords, dental pulp stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells were the most frequently used. Thirty-eight of the 50 most cited articles were original articles, and 37 of them were in the field of basic science. Conclusions: Basic science studies in dental stem cell research published in high impact factor journals had the highest citation rates.

공학적 디자인: 과학, 기술, 공학, 수학교육의 촉진자 (Engineering Design: A Facilitator for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics [STEM] Education)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 과학, 기술, 공학, 수학(STEM) 교육의 다양한 통합적인 노력 중에서 기술과 과학 교육 분야 전문가들이 수행한 디자인 관련 연구들을 고찰하는데 있다. 33개의 통합교육관련 논문들을 선별하여 메타연구와 질적인 내용 분석을 통하여 분석하였다. 연구 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 디자인은 다양한 용어로 사용되고 있으며 다양한 접근방법을 통해 과학과 기술교육분야에 이용되고 있다. 공학적 디자인을 이용한 과학 개념의 학습은 최근 중요하게 다루어지고 있는 주제이며, 인지적, 정의적인 측면에서 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 아울러, 공학적 디자인은 기술교육에 있어 최근 주요 연구 방향으로 제시되고 있으며, 기술교육과 공학교육을 연결할 수 있는 방법을 제공하고 있다. 공학적 디자인을 이용한 교육방법은 학생들의 학습향상과 동기유발에 도움이 되고, 협동학습과 진로교육에 긍정적인 효과를 보여주는 것으로 나타났다. 통합교육에 관한 인식의 부족으로 공학적 디자인을 이용한 과학, 기술, 공학, 수학교육의 효과를 검증하는 연구가 부족한 실정이다.

과학, 기술, 공학, 수학(STEM) 직종에 요구되는 핵심 역량 분석 (Identifying Key Competencies Required for STEM Occupations)

  • 현대 사회에서는 기술이 발전하고 산업이 분화되면서 학생들은 다양한 진로를 선택할 수 있게 되었다. 과학, 기술, 공학, 수학 분야는 다른 분야에 비해 오랜 교육과 경력이 필요하므로 과학기술 직종에 필요한 역량에 기반을 두어 과학교육정책을 설계하고, 학습자가 가진 능력과 적성에 맞는 과학기술 진로를 제시할 필요가 있다. 이 연구는 과학기술 인력과 STEM 직종에 대한 정의를 탐색하고, 미국 노동부에서 운영 및 관리하는 표준 직업 정보($O^*NET$)를 사용하여 STEM 직종의 핵심 역량을 분석하였다. 이 연구는 $O^*NET$의 숙련, 지식, 직업 활동으로 구성된 총 109개의 지표를 대상으로 기술통계와 주성분 분석을 하였다. 그 결과, STEM 직종의 핵심 역량은 STEM 문제해결 역량, 관리역량, 기술 역량, 사회 서비스 역량, 교육 역량, 설계 역량, 생물 화학 역량, 공공서비스 역량으로 구성되며 이들은 전체 분산의 70%를 설명한다. 이 연구는 과학기술직종의 다양성과 과학기술 직종에 요구되는 역량을 구체적으로 보여주어 중등 및 대학교육에서 교육과정 및 교육목표를 설정하는데 참고자료로써 활용될 수 있으며, 개인의 적성에 맞는 개별화된 과학진로교육에 기여할 것이다.

Statistical Analysis about Ability to Mouse Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation using cDNA Microarray

  • As a foundation study of stem cell applied research, it is necessary to identify the large gene expression through cDNA microarray to understand principles of the level of molecular about cell function. In this paper, we investigated the gene expression through the K-means clustering method and path analysis with genes related to pluripoteny and differentiation in an mouse early stage embryonic development process and embryonic stem cell differentiation. We find a few biological phenomenon through this study. Also, we realize that this process provides functional relationship of unknown genes.

Does "Women Friendliness" Matter in STEM Education?: Differential Effects of High-Impact Practices on Career Aspiration of STEM College Students by Gender

  • This study examined the differential effects of High-Impact Practices(HIPs) on the career aspiration of STEM college students by gender. Through the theoretical lens of Social Cognitive Career Theory(SCCT), a two-level model analysis was conducted. A sample of 2,101 third- and fourth-year undergraduate students majoring in STEM at 38 universities, which had been collected from the National Survey on College Student Experiences and Learning Outcomes funded by the Korea Research Foundation, was used. This study found that the three HIP domains(learning with peers, faculty support, content relevancy) had different influences depending on gender. These findings suggest that HIPs can benefit the development of female students' career aspiration and have gender-differential effects on students in STEM majors. Based on those findings, this study also deduced implications about the roles of faculty members and higher-education institutions that might foster the retention of women in STEM.

Human amnion-derived mesenchymal stem cells induced osteogenesis and angiogenesis in human adipose-derived stem cells via ERK1/2 MAPK signaling pathway

  • Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have shown great potential in treating bone deficiency. Human adipose-derived stem cells (HASCs) are multipotent progenitor cells with multi-lineage differentiation potential. Human amnion-derived mesenchymal stem cells (HAMSCs) are capable of promoting osteogenic differentiation of MSCs. In this study, we investigated the effect of HAMSCs on HASCs by a transwell co-culture system. HAMSCs promoted proliferation, osteogenic differentiation, angiogenic potential and adiponectin (APN) secretion of HASCs. Moreover, the positive effect of HAMSCs was significantly inhibited by U0126, a highly selective inhibitor of extracellular signaling-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway. These observations suggested that HAMSCs induced bone regeneration in HASCs via ERK1/2 MAPK signaling pathway.

Using Project-Based Learning Method As a Way to Engage Students in STEM Education

  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education has been at the forefront of K-12 curricula in the technology-rich 21st century, with emphasis on how these fields reinforce each other in preparing students for a dynamic future. However, there is a need for greater attention to STEM education research in the mathematics education community, in particular to pedagogical approaches that facilitate integrating the mathematics component of STEM education. Toward this end, the authors report the outcomes of a Project-based Learning (PBL) unit in which upper elementary students integrated STEM elements by researching, crafting, testing, and evaluating kites they created by applying scientific knowledge of aerodynamics and mathematical knowledge of polygons, surface area, graphs, and data analysis. This unit, which the authors developed, implemented, and assessed, demonstrates how STEM subjects and in particular mathematics can be effectively integrated in upper elementary school classrooms through PBL.

In Vitro Expansion of Homogeneous Neural Precursor Cells Derived from Human Embryonic Stem Cells

  • Human embryonic stem (ES) cells are derived from the inner cell mass of the preimplantation embryo and have the capacity to differentiate into various types of cells in the body. Hence, these cells may potentially be an indefinite source of cells for cell therapy in various degenerative diseases including neuronal disorders. For clinical applications of human ES cells, directed differentiation of these cells would be necessary. The objective of this study is to develop the culture condition for the expansion of neural precursor cells derived from human ES cells. Human ES cells were able to differentiate into neural precursor cells upon a stepwise culture condition. Neural precursor cells were propagated up to 5000-fold in cell numbers over 12-week period of culture and evaluated for their characteristics. Expressions of sox1 and pax6 transcripts were dramatically up-regulated along the differentiation stages by RT-PCR analysis. In contrast, expressions of oct4 and nanog transcripts were completely disappeared in neural precursor cells. Expressions of nestin, pax6 and sox1 were also confirmed in neural precursor cells by immunocytochemical analysis. Upon differentiation, the expanded neural precursor cells differentiated into neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes. In immunocytochemical analysis, expressions of type III ${\beta}$-tubulin and MAP2ab were observed Presence of astrocytes and oligodendrocytes were also confirmed by expressions of GFAP and O4, respectively. Results of this study demonstrate the feasibility of long-term expansion of human ES cell-derived neural precursor cells in vitro, which can be a potential source of the cells for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders.

Comparative Analysis for In Vitro Differentiation Potential of Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells, Embryonic Stem Cells, and Multipotent Spermatogonial Stem Cells into Germ-lineage Cells

  • In the present study, embryoid bodies (EBs) obtained from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) were induced to differentiate into germ lineage cells by treatment with bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) and retinoic acid (RA). The results were compared to the results for embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and multipotent spermatogonial stem cells (mSSCs) and quantified using immunocytochemical analysis of germ cell-specific markers (integrin-${\alpha}6$, GFR-${\alpha}1$, CD90/Thy1), fluorescence activating cell sorting (FACS), and real time-RT-PCR. We show that the highest levels of germ cell marker-expressing cells were obtained from groups treated with 10 ng/$m{\ell}$ BMP4 or 0.01 ${\mu}M$ RA. In the BMP4-treated group, GFR-${\alpha}1$ and CD90/Thy-1 were highly expressed in the EBs of iPSCs and ESCs compared to EBs of mSSCs. The expression of Nanog was much lower in iPSCs compared to ESCs and mSSCs. In the RA treated group, the level of GFR-${\alpha}1$ and CD90/Thy-1 expression in the EBs of mSSCs Induced pluripotent stem cells, Mouse embryonic stem cells, Multipotent spermatogonial stem cells, Germ cell lineage, Differentiation potential. was much higher than the levels found in the EBs of iPSCs and similar to the levels found in the EBs of ESCs. FACS analysis using integrin-${\alpha}6$, GFR-${\alpha}1$, CD90/Thy1 and immunocytochemistry using GFR-${\alpha}1$ antibody showed similar gene expression results. Therefore our results show that iPSC has the potential to differentiate into germ cells and suggest that a protocol optimizing germ cell induction from iPSC should be developed because of their potential usefulness in clinical applications requiring patient-specific cells.
