Analyis of the Structure and Impact of SCM Advanced Planning System : Lessons from POSCO Case (SCM 첨단계획수립시스템의 구조와 도입효과 분석 : 포스코 사례를 중심으로)

  • POSCO has been chosen as the most competitive steelmaker in the world, for the 4th year in a row. It's potentials and key success points lay at technology innovation as well as effective partnerships with suppliers and customers. Partnership with suppliers is based upon the effective supply chain management. While ERP system supports the standard business work flows, the biggest impact on business performance is created by exceptions and variability. A SCM Advanced Planning System reduces the amount of exceptional situations, helping to keep business in a standard mode of operation. A case summary on SCM Advanced Planning System of POSCO as well as its impact on firm performances is presented. As a supplement to this case study, we also investigate the employees' perceived level of SCM-related factors, including information sharing, collaboration, incentive system for suppliers and their impacts on SCM performances. As a conclusion, the practical implications of these findings are discussed.

A Test of Individual Firm's Collusive Behavior: The Case of Purchase Price Fixing in the Iron Scrap Market (담합 사례 연구: 철스크랩 구매가격 담합 사건에서 개별 기업의 담합 실행 여부에 대한 실증적 검증)

  • In the steel industry, there is a perception that "collusion has become a long-standing practice" and it is expected that the authorities' legal response to collusion will be strengthened in the future. This necessarily requires improving the accuracy of the legal response, the most important of which is to accurately identify whether the allegedly colluding firms actually did collude. This study focuses on the recent iron scrap price-fixing case and examines whether a single accused firm actually engaged in price-fixing in a situation where there is a mix of firms that acted independently of the collusion and firms that actually engaged in price-fixing. The results of the analysis allow us to infer that the accused steelmaker did not actually collude, which is consistent with the authorities' final judgment against the steelmaker. In the real world, some collusions are carried out by only a subset of firms in a market, and in these cases, there are often disputed firms as to whether or not they carried out the collusion. This study can serve as an analytic guide for industries, including the steel industry, to verify the behavior of individual firms, especially those whose collusive practices are disputed.

The Effect of Information Technology on the Knowledge Management Activity from MANDO and POSCO (정보기술이 지식경영활동에 미치는 영향: 만도와 포스코 사례를 중심으로)

  • Information technology instruments arc being rampantly used for knowledge management in companies. IT is used as an interplay tool to enhance the flow of knowledge and information between people. KMS, especially, supports the knowledge management process including sharing, creating, and using of knowledge within a company, and maximizes the value of knowledge resources within an organization. The purpose of this paper is to understand how IT is changing the knowledge management activity. through various examples based on exploratory research from MANDO, the Korean automotive parts manufacturer, and POSCO, the global leading steelmaker. The result shows that IT boosts communication skills, thus creates a mutual relationship outcome. In the same context, the process of knowledge conversion by Nonaka's SECI model simplifies to an Externalization-Internalization process. This process accelerates the birth of explicit knowledge and Socialization, supplements the Limitations of the creation of knowledge in the E-I cycle. The E of knowledge simultaneously promotes the I, and eventually brings an advanced learning skill. IT aids the E of knowledge and furthermore, I and E activity, through the knowledge sharing, brings vitality into an organization. The interplay stage for knowledge activity is to be reorganized to a cyber ba. Furthermore, IT will galvanize the formation of core knowledge through systemized acquisition, management of core knowledge and standardization of work.
