  • Recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) is rarely used in load-carrying structural members. To widen its structural application, the compressive behavior of a promising type of composite column, steel-fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) double-tube confined RAC column, has been experimentally and analytically investigated in this study. The objectives are the different performance of such columns from their counterparts using natural aggregate concrete (NAC) and the different mechanisms of the double-tube and single-tube confined concrete. The single-tube confined concrete refers to that in concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns and concrete-filled FRP tubular (CFFT) columns. The test results showed that the use of recycled coarse aggregates (RCA) affected the axial load-strain response in terms of deformation capacity but such effect could be eliminated with the increasing confinement. The composite effect can be triggered by the double confinement of the steel and carbon FRP (CFRP) tubes but not by the steel and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) FRP tubes. The proposed analysis-oriented stress-strain model is capable to capture the load-deformation history of such steel-FRP double-tube confined concrete columns under axial compression.

  • We could say that the concrete filled steel tube structure is superior in the vlew of various structure properties as to promote improvement of structural capacity to dtmonstrate heterogeneous material properties interdependently. The compressive strength is increased by putting to tri axial stress because lateral expansion of concrete 1s confined by the steel tube, when concrete conflned by steel tube fall under centric axial load. Also, it have an advantage that decreasr of load carrying capacity 1s small, not occuring section deficiency due to protect falling piienornonon by co~nprrssion fallurc of concrete. So this study investigated for structural behaviors yroprrtiex of concwir. confined by steel tube throughout a series of experlmerit with kcy parxncter, such as diameter-to-thickness(D / t) ratio, strength of concrete as a study on properties of structural behaviors of confined concrete confined by circular steel tube( tri axial stress). Frorn the expcrment results, the obtained results, are surnrnarised as foliow. (1) The restraint effect of concrete by steel tube was presented significantly as the D /t ratio of steel tube and the strength of filled concrete decrease, and the confined concrete by circular steel tube was increased respectively twice as much as 4-7 in deformation capacity at the ultimate strength ,compared with those of non-confined concrete, so expected to increase flexible effect of concrete. (2) The emprical formula to predict the ultimate capacity of confined concrete by steel tube and concrete filled steel tube column using restraint coefficient of concrete were proposed.

  • A new method to prevent reinforced concrete columns from brittle failure. The method is called transversely reinforcing method in which only the critical regions are confined in steel tube. The steel tubes can change the failure mode of the latter columns from the shear to the flexure. The steel tubes also increase the compressive strength, shear strength and deformation capacity of the infilled concrete. The following conclusions are reached on bases of the study on the seismic performance of the high-strength RC rectangualr short columns confined in steel tube with shear span tho depth ratio of 2.0 The brittle shear failure of high-strength reinforced concrete short columns with large amount of longitudinal bars, which cannot prevented by using the maximum amount of welded hoops, can be prevented by using the steel tube which confines all the maximum amount of welded hoops, can be prevented by using the steel tube which confines all the concrete inclusive of cover concrete. High-strength RC short columns confined in rectangular steel tube provided excellent enhancement of seismic performance but, found that plastic buckling of the steel tube in the hinge regions tended to occur when the columns were subjected to large cyclic lateral displacements. In order to prevent the plastic buckling when the columns lies on large on cyclic lateral displacements, the steel ribs were used for columns. Tests have established that the columns provide excellent enhancement of seismic performance of inadequately confined columns.

  • Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) has recently been applied as an alternative to conventional concrete in construction due to its extremely high compressive and tensile strength, and enhanced durability. However, up to date, there has been insufficient information regarding the confinement behavior of UHPC columns. Therefore, this study aims to perform an assessment of axial stress-strain model for UHPC confined by circular steel tube stub columns. The equations for calculating the confined peak stress and its corresponding strain of confined concrete in existing models suggested by Johansson (2002), Sakino et al. (2004), Han et al. (2005), Hatzigeorgiou (2008) were modified based on the regression analysis of test results in Schneider (2006) in order to increase the prediction accuracy for the case of confined UHPC. Furthermore, a new axial stress-strain model for confined UHPC was developed. To examine the suitability of the modified models and the proposed model for confined UHPC, axial stress-strain curves derived from the proposed models were compared with those obtained from previous test results. After validating the proposed model, an extensive parametric study was undertaken to investigate the effects of diameter-to-thickness ratio, steel yield strength and concrete compressive strength on the complete axial stress-strain curves, the strength and strain enhancement of UHPC confined by circular steel tube stub columns.

  • The use of ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) in composite columns offers numerous structural benefits, and has received recent research attention. However, the information regarding the behavior of steel tube confined concrete (STCC) columns employing UHPC has been extremely limited. Thus, this paper presents an overview of previous experimental studies on circular STCC columns with taking into account various concrete strengths to point out their distinctive features. The effect of the confinement factor and the diameter to thickness ratio on both strength and ductility in circular STCC columns employing UHPC was investigated. The applicability of current design codes such as EC4, AISC, AIJ and some available analytical models for concrete confined by steel tube was also validated by the comparison of ultimate loads between the prediction and the test results of Schneider (2006) and Xiong (2012). To predict the stress-strain curves for confined UHPC in circular STCC stub columns, a simplified model was proposed and verified by the comparison with experimental stress-strain curves.

  • This paper aims to analytically investigate the effect of shear stress at the concrete-steel interface on the mechanical behavior of the circular steel tube-confined concrete (STCC) stub columns with active and passive confinement subjected to axial compression. Nonlinear 3D finite element models divided into the four groups, i.e. circumferential-grooved, talc-coated, lubricated, and normal groups, with active and passive confinement were developed. An innovative method was used to simulate the actively-confined specimens, and then, the results of the finite element models were compared with those of the experiments previously conducted by the authors. It was revealed that both the predicted peak compressive strength and stress-strain curves have good agreement with the corresponding values measured for the confined columns. Then, the mechanical properties of the active and passive specimens such as the concrete-steel interaction, longitudinal and hoop stresses of the steel tube, confining pressure applied to the concrete core, and compressive stress-strain curves were analyzed. Furthermore, a parametric study was performed to explore the effects of the concrete compressive strength, steel tube diameter-to-wall thickness ratio, and prestressing level on the compressive behavior of the STCC columns. The results indicate that reducing or removing the interfacial shear stress in the active and passive specimens leads to an increase in the hoop stress and confining pressure, while the longitudinal stress along the steel tube height experiences a decrease. Moreover, prestressing via the presented method is capable of improving the compressive behavior of STCC columns.

  • This paper presents the results of a comprehensive experimental investigation on the compressive behaviour of steel tube-confined concrete (STCC) stub columns with active and passive confinement. To create active confinement in STCC columns, an innovative technique is used in which steel tube is laterally pre-tensioned while the concrete core is simultaneously pre-compressed by applying pressure on fresh concrete. A total of 135 STCC specimens with active and passive confinement are tested under axial compression load and their compressive strength, ultimate strain capacity, axial and lateral stress-strain curves and failure mode are evaluated. The test variables include concrete compressive strength, outer diameter to wall thickness ratio of steel tube and prestressing level. It is shown that applying active confinement on STCC specimens can considerably improve their mechanical properties. However, applying higher prestressing levels and keeping the applied pressure for a long time do not considerably affect the mechanical properties of actively confined specimens. Based on the results of this study, new empirical equations are proposed to estimate the axial strength and ultimate strain capacity of STCC stub columns with active and passive confinement.

  • When the weight if a concrete member makes problems, or when the cost of the concrete is relatively high, it may be economical to use a hollow concrete member. But a hollow R.C column may have poor ductility because of the brittle failure at the inner face of the hollow R.C column. This brittle failure results from the absence of the confinement at the inner face of the hollow R.C column. To avoid this brittle failure an internally confined hollow R.C column by a steel tube was developed before. In this study, a hollow R.C column is internally confined by a corrugated steel tube instead of a general flat steel tube. And a column ductility is performed. Test results show that the energy ductility ratio of a internally confined hollow R.C column by a by a corrugated steel tube corresponds to $80\%$ of the energy ductility ratio of a general solid R.C column.

  • This study investigated to the properties of structural behaviors through a series of experiment with the key parameter, such as diameter-to-thickness(D/t) ratio, selenderness ratio of steel t~ube and strength of concrete under loading condition simple confined concrete by steel tube as a fundmental study on adaptability with structural members in high-rise building. The obtained results are sumnarised as follow. (1) The fracture mode of confined concrete was presented digonal tension fracture in the direction of $45^{\circ}$ with compression failure at the end of specimen in stub column, but the fracture mode of long column was assumed an aspect of bending fracture transversely. (2) The deformation capacity and ductility effect was increased by confine steel tube for concrete. (3) 'The emprical formula to predict the ultimate capacity of confined concrete by steel tube and concrete filled steel tube column using restraint of concrete considered D / t ratio, selenderness ratio of steel tube anti strength of' concrete were proposed.

  • The confined concrete subjected multi-axial stresses have been known as the strength of concrete increases significantly. Many researchers have studied in confining effects of concrete, and now are studying in many fields. However, there are few passive confinements by steel tube. Although Mander et al. studied the concrete confined by transverse reinforcements, the confinement by steel tube differs from confining of reinforcements. To investigate the influence of concrete strength increased by confining conditions in steel, 51 specimens confined by different shapes and thicknesses of steel tube were tested and compared.
