Quick Judgments of Properties of Fine Aggregate to Use the Electric Arc Furnace Oxidizing Slag

  • Blast furnace slag is recycled as a high value-added material, while steel slag is difficult to recycle or is recycled as a low-grade filler material due to its expansive characteristics. Its property is caused by the high content of free lime and instable steel oxides. Recently, an innovative and rapid cooling method for melting steel slag has been developed in Korea, which reduces free lime content to a minimum level and increases the stability of steel oxides. However, researches on the long-term stability are not sufficient so far. Therefore, this study, focusing on the electric arc furnace oxidizing slag in the steel slag, aims to investigate the properties of the steel slag aggregate, its long-term volume stability and the engineering strength of mortar, and using it as a fine aggregate. This study result indicated that it was possible for it to be used as concrete aggregate because the volume change of the steel slag appeared to be stable.

제강슬래그와 폐아스팔트를 활용한 중온 아스팔트 포장의 거동 분석 (Experimental and Numerical Analysis of Warm Mix Asphalt Pavement prepared using Steel Slag and RAP)

  • PURPOSES : This study aimed to analyze the experimental and numerical behavior of warm mix asphalt pavement prepared using steel slag and RAP and to conduct economic analysis of pavement construction. METHODS : For developing high performance asphalt pavement, we performed three evaluations: fundamental analysis, experimental testing, and 3D finite element analysis. In particular, 3D finite element analysis was conducted on several pavement structures by adopting the results of experimental tests. RESULTS : Through the various evaluations, it was established that steel slag was effective for use as asphalt mixture aggregate. Moreover, asphalt mixture constituting steel slag and RAP demonstrated higher performance behavior compared with conventionally used asphalt mixture. Furthermore, based on the 3D FE modeling, we established that the developed asphalt pavement constituting steel slag and RAP can be utilized for thin layer pavement with comparable performance behavior. CONCLUSIONS :Warm mix asphalt pavement prepared using steel slag and RAP is more competitive and economic compared to hot-mix asphalt pavement. Moreover, it can be applied for preparing thin layer asphalt pavements with reasonable performance. The developed warm mix asphalt pavement prepared using steel slag and RAP can be an alternative pavement type with competitive performance based on the reasonable economic benefit it provides.

Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Electro-Slag Cast Steel for Hot Working Tools

  • The thermal and mechanical properties of an electro-slag cast steel of a similar chemical composition with an AISI-6F2 steel are investigated and compared with a forged AISI-6F2 steel. AISI-6F2 is a hot-working tool steel. Electro-slag casting (ESC) is a method of producing ingots in a water-cooled metal mold by the heat generated in an electrically conductive slag when current passes through a consumable electrode. The ESC method provides the possibility of producing material for the high quality hot-working tools and ingots directly into a desirable shape. In the present study, the thermal and mechanical properties of yield strength, tensile strength, hardness, impact toughness, wear resistance, thermal fatigue resistance, and thermal shock resistance for electro-slag cast and forged steel are experimentally measured for both annealed and quenched and tempered heat treatment conditions. It has been found that the electro-slag cast steel has comparable thermal and mechanical properties to the forged steel.

Effect of the Slag Former on the Metal Melting and Radionuclides Distribution in an Electric Arc Furnace

  • The characteristics of the metal melting and radionuclide distribution of the radioactive has been investigated in a lab-scale arc furnace. The slag former based on the constituents of silica, calcium oxide, aluminum oxide, borate and calcium fluoride additions was used for melting of the stainless and carbon steel. In the melting of the stainless steel, the amount of slag formation increased with an increase of the concentration of the slag former. But the effects of the slag basicity on the amount of stag formation showed a local maximum value of the slag formation with an increase of the basicity index in the melting of the stainless steel as well as in the melting of the carbon steel. With an increase of the amount of slag former addition, the trends of the cobalt distribution into the ingot and the stag depended on the kind of slag former used in the melting of the stainless steel while the effect of the slag basicity on the distribution of the cobalt was not clarified in the melting of carbon steel. Tn the melting of the carbon steel, the strontium was captured at up to $50\%$ into the slag phase. Cesium was completely eliminated from the melt of the stainless steel as well as the carbon steel and distributed to the dust phase.

제강슬래그를 이용한 샌드매트 대체재료의 적용성 연구 (Application of Sand Mat Substitutel using Steel Slag)

  • 제강슬래그는 미반응 CaO와 물과 접촉에 의해 수화, 팽창하는 성질을 가지고 있기 때문에 토목용 골재로서 재활용율이 매우 낮을 뿐만아니라 매립처리 및 재활용 용도가 제한적이다. 이러한 제강슬래그를 보다 효율적으로 활용하기 위하여 샌드매트 대체재료로서 적용 가능성을 검토하였다. 일반적으로 샌드매트는 연약지반의 표층처리공법과 수평배수공법으로 적용되고 있으며, 대부분 연약지반의 연직배수공법과 병행하여 시공되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 제강슬래그를 샌드매트 대체재료로서 재활용하고자 설계방법과 적용기준 등을 고찰하였으며, 실내토질시험 및 모형실험을 실시하였다. 시험결과로부터 환경 및 각종 품질기준에 만족하는 것으로 평가되어 샌드매트 대체재료로 활용 가능한 것으로 판단하였으며, 모형재하실험을 통한 슬래그매트의 지지력 분석결과에서도 기존 샌드매트와 비교하여 2배이상 지지력이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다.

  • This study dealt with the influence of the replacement ratio of rapidly-chilled steel slag on fluidity and compressive strength of unsaturated polyester polymer concretes. The rapidly-chilled steel slag used in this study, a by-product which is produced by refining pig iron during the manufacture of steel, was controled by a air-jet method which rapidly cools substance melted at a high temperature. Experimental results show that fluidity and compressive strength of unsaturated polyester polymer concretes increase with increasing replacement ratio of rapidly-chilled steel slag. Use of rapidly-chilled steel slag was found to be effective for improving fluidity and compressive strength of rapidly-chilled steel slag.

  • In order to evaluate the applicability of steel slag aggregates for tetrapod concrete, the properties of concrete as structural material were investigated. The biochemical research of marine concrete using steel slag aggregates was also carried out. The tested concrete properties are slump, air content, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, elastic modulus, carbonation, hydration heat, freezing and thawing, sulfate attack, drying shrinkage, etc. The biochemical experiments are carried to research the propagation and reproduction of seaweeds and survival of bottom dwelling species. According to the experimental results, the steel slag aggregate content did not have a significant effect on compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and elastic modulus. The durability of concrete was not influenced by the steel slag aggregate content. From the biochemical research, steel slag aggregate can be evaluated as the material that is ideally suited for promoting propagation and reproduction of seaweeds and survival of bottom dwelling species.

  • PURPOSES : This paper presents a mix design method for using steel slag as an aggregate for asphalt mixtures. METHODS : Steel slag has a different density and absorption rate than natural aggregates. The asphalt content was calculated according to the steel slag characteristics, and the formula for aggregate-gradation correction was presented. RESULTS : The asphalt mix was designed using the proposed equations. Using the proposed mix design method, it was possible to design the asphalt mixture according to the target-usage amount of the recycled aggregate. CONCLUSIONS : The suggested method can be used for asphalt mix design using aggregates with different densities and absorption rates. It is expected to contribute to quality improvement by ensuring accurate calculation of mixing ratios for steel slag asphalt mixtures.

  • 철강산업에서 발생되는 제강 환원슬래그(Ladle furnace slag, LFS)를 사용하여 아토마이징 공법을 통하여 구형의 아토마이징 제강 환원슬래그를 제조하였다. 아토마이징 제강 환원슬래그의 대량 재활용 기술을 개발하기 위하여 구형의 아토마이징 제강 환원슬래그를 입도에 따라 잔골재(강모래)와 굵은 골재(쇄석)를 대체 사용하여 폴리머 콘크리트 복합재료를 제조하였다. 폴리머 콘크리트 복합재료의 특성을 조사하기 위하여 폴리머 결합재의 첨가율과 아토마이징 제강 환원슬래그의 대체율에 따라 다양한 배합의 폴리머 콘크리트 공시체를 제조하였다. 시험결과, 아토마이징 제강 환원슬래그의 대체율 증가에 따라 공시체의 압축강도는 감소되었으나 휨강도는 50%의 대체율에서 최대 강도를 나타내었다. 아토마이징 제강 환원슬래그를 사용함으로서 작업성이 향상되어 폴리머 콘크리트 복합재료의 생산원가에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 폴리머 결합재의 사용량을 최대 18.2 vol% 절감할 수 있었다. 그러나 내열수성시험에서 아토마이징 제강 환원슬래그를 사용한 공시체의 기계적 강도가 현저히 감소되기 때문에 더 많은 연구가 요구된다.

  • Recently, the river sands are in short supply. Gathering sea-sand will be faced with difficulty. Alternative aggregates for concrete are estimated by many researchers. The aggregates are blast furnace slag, steel slag, copper slag, ferro-nickel slag and recycled aggregate and etc. Nevertheless steel slag has been limited in practical use due to its expansibility which is occurred reaction with water and free CaO in slag. Most recently stable management method is to minimize the expansibility researched and developed. First of all, slump, air content, compressive strength and flexural strength are measured in concrete. An estimate is made of the segregation of concrete containing atomized steel slag by Image Analyser program.
