The effectiveness of an innovative method for the earthquake-resistant rehabilitation of existing poorly detailed reinforced concrete (RC) structures is experimentally investigated herein. Eight column subassemblages were subjected to earthquake-type loading and their hysteretic behaviour was evaluated. Four of the specimens were identical and representative of columns found in RC structures designed in the 1950s-70s period for gravity load only. These original specimens were subjected to cyclic lateral deformations and developed brittle failure mechanisms. Three of the damaged specimens were subsequently retrofitted with innovative high-strength steel fiber-reinforced concrete (HSSFC) jackets. The main variables examined were the jacket width and the contribution of mesh steel reinforcement in the seismic performance of the enhanced columns. The influence of steel fiber volume fraction was also examined using test results of a previous work of Tsonos et al. (2017). The fourth earthquake damaged subassemblage was strengthened with a conventional RC jacket and was subjected to the same lateral displacement history as the other three retrofitted columns. The seismic behaviour of the subassemblages strengthened according to the proposed retrofit scheme was evaluated with respect to that of the original specimens and that of the column strengthened with the conventional RC jacket. Test results clearly demonstrated that the HSSFC jackets effectively prevented the development of shear failure mechanisms, while ensuring a ductile seismic response similar to that of the subassemblage retrofitted with the conventional RC jacket. Ultimately, an indisputable superiority in the overall seismic performance of the strengthened columns was achieved with respect to the original specimens.

Recently, many researchers have performed R&D about strengthening of R/C with steel plates, carbon fiber sheets. aramid fiber sheets and glass fiber sheets, and so on. However most of research were limited in study of flexural strengthening of R/C beams. This paper shows the results of an experimental study on shear reinforcement of deep beams using Glass Fiber Sheet in relation to shear-span ratio. strengthening orientation and anchorage. The results prove that shear failure is governed by reinforced orientation. adherence and anchorage. Additional anchorage of fibers does not only cause the improvement in the internal resistance, but also control the brittle shear failure of specimen after reaching the maximum load.

The present paper investigates the post heating behavior of concrete beams reinforced with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars, namely carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) bars and glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars. Thirty rectangular concrete beams were prepared and cured for 28 days. Then, beams were either subjected (in duplicates) to elevated temperatures in the range (100 to $500^{\circ}C$) or left at room temperature before tested under four point loading for flexural response. Experimental results showed that beams, reinforced with CFRP and GFRP bars and subjected to temperatures below $300^{\circ}C$, showed better mechanical performance than that of corresponding ones with conventional reinforcing steel bars. The results also revealed that ultimate load capacity and stiffness pertaining to beams with FRP reinforcement decreased, yet their ultimate deflection and toughness increased with higher temperatures. All beams reinforced with FRP materials, except those post-heated to $500^{\circ}C$, failed by concrete crushing followed by tension failure of FRP bars.
Flexural fracture characteristics of newly-developed Grid-type carbon fiber plastics in the deteriorated reinforced concrete structures were investigated by the four-points fracture test to verify the strengthening effects in the beam specimens. Results showed that initial cracks appeared in the boundary layers of fibers embedded in the newly-placed mortar concrete slowly progressed to the direction of supports and showed fracture of fiber plastics and brittle failure of concrete in compression in sequence after the yielding of steel reinforcement. Accordingly the reasonable area of Grid-type carbon-fiber plastics in the strengthening design of deteriorated RC structures should be limited and given based on the ultimate strength design method to avoid the brittle failure of concrete structures.

This research presents the experimental and theoretical evaluations on circular steel-fiber-reinforced-concrete (SFRC) columns reinforced by glass-fiber-reinforced-polymer (GFRP) rebar under the axial compressive loading. Test programs were designed to investigate and compare the effect of different parameters on the structural behavior of columns by performing tests. Theses variables included conventional concrete (CC), fiber concrete (FC), steel/GFRP longitudinal rebars, and transversal rebars configurations. A total of 16 specimens were constructed and categorized into four groups in terms of different rebar-concrete configurations, including GFRP-rebar-reinforced-CC columns (GRCC), GFRP-rebar-reinforced-FC columns (GRFC), steel-rebar-reinforced-CC columns (SRCC) and steel-rebar- reinforced-FC columns (SRFC). Experimental observations displayed that failure modes and cracking patterns of four groups of columns were similar, especially in pre-peak branches of load-deflection curves. Although the average ultimate axial load of columns with longitudinal GFRP rebars was obtained by 17.9% less than the average ultimate axial load of columns with longitudinal steel rebars, the average axial ductility index (DI) of them was gained by 10.2% higher than their counterpart columns. Adding steel fibers (SFs) into concrete led to the increases of 7.7% and 6.7% of the axial peak load and the DI of columns than their counterpart columns with CC. The volumetric ratio had greater efficiency on peak loads and DIs of columns than the type of transversal reinforcement. A simple analytical equation was proposed to predict the axial compressive capacity of columns by considering the axial involvement of longitudinal GFRP rebars, volumetric ratio, and steel spiral/hoop rebar. There was a good correlation between test results and predictions of the proposed equation.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the flexural behavior of high-strength steel fiber-reinforced concrete beams with compressive strength of 130 MPa. The paper presents experimental research results of steel fiber-reinforced concrete beams with steel fiber content of 1.0% by volume and steel reinforcement ratio of less than 0.02. Both of normal-strength rebar and high-strength rebar were used in the test beams. Modeling as well as compressive and tensile strength test of high-strength steel fiber-reinforced concrete was performed to predict the bending strength of concrete beams. Tension modeling was performed by using inverse analysis in which load-crack mouth opening displacement relationship was considered. The experimental results show that high-strength steel fiber-reinforced concrete beams and the addition of high-strength rebar is in favor of cracking resistance and ductile behavior of beams. For beams reinforced with normal-strength rebar, the ratio of bending strength prediction to the test result ranged from 0.81 to 1.42, whereas for beams reinforced with high-strength rebar, the ratio of bending strength prediction to the test result ranged from 0.92 to 1.07. The comparison of bending strength from numerical analysis with the test results showed a reasonable agreement.

Beam-column gravity or Intermediate Moment frames subjected to unexpected large displacements are vulnerable when no seismic details are provided, which is typical. Conversely, economic efficiency of those frames is decreased if unnecessary special detailing is applied as the beam and column size becomes quite large and steel congestion is caused by joint transverse reinforcement in beam-column connections. Moderate seismic design is used in Korea for beam-column connections of buildings with structural walls, which are to be destroyed when the unexpected large earthquake occurs. Nonetheless, performance of such beamcolumn connections may be substantially improved by the addition of steel fibers. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of steel fibers in reinforced concrete exterior beam-column connections and possibility for the replacement of some joint transverse reinforcement. Ten half-scale beam-column connections with non-seismic details were tested under cyclic loads with two cycles at each drift up to 19 cycles. Main test parameters used were the volume ratio of steel fibers (0%, 1%, 1.5%) and joint transverse reinforcement amount. The test results show that maximum capacity, energy dissipation capacity, shear strength and bond condition are improved with the application of steel fibers to substitute transverse reinforcement of beam-column connections. Furthermore, several shear strength equations for exterior connections were examined, including the proposed equation for steel fiber-reinforced concrete exterior connections with non-seismic details.
In this study, performance of fiber-reinforced polymer-modified mortar was studied for the development of eco-friendly materials for high performance repair and reinforcement. The general cement mortar and eco-friendly UM resin was mixed with a certain percentage for increased durability. To increase the strength of the polymer-modified mortar, PVA fiber, steel fiber and hybrid fiber were added at a constant rate. Hybrid fiber is contains the same percentage of PVA fiber and steel fiber. In order to determine the strength properties of fiber-reinforced polymer-modified mortar, the compressive strength test, the splitting tensile strength test and the flexural strength test were performed. And, in order to determine the durability properties of fiber-reinforced polymer-modified mortar, water absorption test and chemical resistance test were performed. From the experimental results, polymer-modified mortar using UM resin was improved durability. And the tensile strength and flexural strength increased, which were the vulnerability of fiber reinforced polymer-modified mortar. From this study, fiber-reinforced polymer-modified mortar using eco-friendly UM resin can be used to repair and reinforcement for the external exposure of concrete structures to improve the durability.
This paper proposes a simple inelastic analysis approach to efficiently map out the complete nonlinear post-collapse (strain-softening) response and the maximum load capacity of axially loaded concrete encased steel composite columns (stub and slender). The scheme simultaneously incorporates the influences of difficult instabilizing phenomena such as concrete confinement, initial geometric imperfection, geometric nonlinearity, buckling of reinforcement bars and local buckling of structural steel, on the overall behavior of the composite columns. The proposed numerical method adopts fiber element discretization and an iterative M${\ddot{u}}$ller's algorithm with an additional adaptive technique that robustly yields solution convergence. The accuracy of the proposed analysis scheme is validated through comparisons with various available experimental benchmarks. Finally, a parametric study of various key parameters on the overall behaviors of the composite columns is conducted.

In this paper, flexure behavior of steel fiber reinforcement ultra high performance cementations composites (SFR-UHPCC) has been analyzed by equivalent stress block. Pulling-out tensile force of steel fiber with concrete matrix was induced. An appropriate flexure evaluation formula, i.e. semi-analytical formula, was established based on rectangular cross section beam for comparing with shear capacity and ultimate load of SFR-UHPCC beam. Finally, the semi-analytical formula has been simplified for the convenience of design work. Experimental results and theoretical shear strength are shown to compare with the formula proposed by this paper. The theory formula has a good prediction of failure type of SFR-UHPCC.
