A new form of construction utilizing structural steel as the boundary elements in ductile flexural concrete walls is proposed to solve the bar congestion problems associated with such a heavily reinforced region. Two wall specimens containing rectangular hollow structural sections(HSS) and channels at their ends respectively were constructed rectangular hollow structural sections(HSS) and channels ar their ends respectively were constructed and tested under reversed cyclic loading to evaluate the construction process as well as the structural performance. One companion standard reinforced concrete wall specimen was also tested for the comparison purpose At an Initial stage all three specimens were carefully detailed to have the approximately same flexural capacity. Analysis and comparison of test results indicated that the reversed cyclic responses of the three walls showed similar hysteretic properties but in those with steel boundaries local bucking of the corresponding steel elements following significant yielding of structural steel was prominent. Design procedures considering local instability of the structural steel elements and the interaction between steel chord and concrete web members in such composite walls are presented.

The steel piers and the concrete-filled steel piers, in spite of reasonable strength, high ductility, small section, and fast construction, have not been considered as the alternatives to the RC piers even in the highly populated urban area where aseismic safety, limited space and fast construction are indispensably required. In this paper, a steel pier and 4 box type concrete-filled steel piers were tested with the quasi-static cyclic loading to estimate the ductility and the strength. Additional devices such as base rib, turn-buckle, and anchor bolted added at the to increase the ductility with minimum additional cost. The result showed that the concrete filled-in steel piers had higher energy absorbtion and strength than steel piers had, but also showed that slight overlooking in the design and fabrication could lead to the abrupt fracture just after small local buckling at the bottom.
A rockbolt is one of the most important reinforcement of on-site soil, as with the shotcrete and steel rib. The rockbolt by setting within the tunnel can prevent the deformation of the ground profile; furthermore it improves the structural behavior of soil and rock. In general, the rockbolt is mainly used with reinforced steel. However, steel pipe or the materials with the same strength can be used depending on the soil conditions, ground water outflow condition, and the surrounding of applying location. In Korea, most tunnel construction sites have used cement mortar or resin for steel reinforcement on the rock. Due to the ground water outflow in the construction site, the usability of steel reinforcement is poor and it requires curing time especially after installation. To improve exist above problems, this study introduces the development of a swelled steel pipe rockbolt, as well as presents the field testing and performance results.
The thermal creep is one of the major factors causing the buckle of steel columns in the fire events. But, few related studies have been reported to evaluate the factors affecting the thermal creep of steel column experimentally or numerically. In this study a series of Fire-resistant steel columns with three different slenderness ratios under a sustained load are tested under a uniform temperature up to six hours in order to evaluate the creep upon three selected factors, temperature, applied load, and column slenderness. Based on experimental results, a proposed creep strain rate model is established as the function of a single parameter of the load ratio of temperature LR(T) to determine the buckling time of steel column due to creep. Furthermore it is found that the creep can be neglected when LR(T) is smaller than 0.77.
The Eurocode system provides limited information regarding the structural fire design of external steel structures. Eurocode 1 provides thermal action for external member but only in steady-state conditions. On the other hand, Eurocode 3 provides a methodology to determine heat transfer to external steelwork, but there is no distinction in cross section shapes and, in addition, the calculated temperature distribution is assumed to be uniform in the cross section. This paper presents the results of a research carried out to develop a new transient heat transfer model for external steel elements to improve the current approach of the Eurocodes. This research was carried out as part of the project EXFIRE "Development of design rules for the fire behaviour of external steel structures", funded by the European Research Programme of the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS).
This study deals with characterization and the application of magnetoelasticity as a device which measures existing steel stress. Available method of measuring existing stress needs break the concrete and cut the steel bar. But Proposed method doesn't need to cut the steel bar. A successful application of magnetoelasticity depends on the linearity of the relationship between the elastic and magnetic response due to loading. To investigate the correlation between two, steel bars are loaded in tension under uniaxial loading while the magnetic reading is recorded. Results showed linearity or partial-linearity of the elastic behavior of steel bars in relation to magnetic change. In the paper, the various factors affecting the measurements are also discussed.
Recently, the research on steel fiber reinforced concrete has been actively conducted to compensate the defect of brittle fracture of concrete and to enhance toughness. Therefore, the effect of the mixture rate of straight steel fiber on flexural behavior of high strength steel fiber reinforced concrete was evaluated in this research. As a result, when 2% of steel fiber was mixed with concrete volume ratio, it showed the best flexural capacity.
In this study, an experiment in the field was performed to analyze the mechanical properties and the influence of steel fiber and silica fume on the rebound ratios of shotcrete. The experimental parameters which are the reinforcing methods (steel fiber, wire mesh), steel fiber contents (0.0%, 0.5%, 0.75%, 1.0%), silica fume contents (0.0%, 10.0%), layer thickness (60 mm, 80 mm, 100 mm), and the placing parts (sidewall, shoulder, crown) were chosen. From the mechanical test, it was found that the flexural strength and toughness is significantly improved by the steel fiber and/or silica fume. According to the results for the side wall in this test, the larger the fiber contents are in case of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete, the less the rebound ratios are within the range of 20-35%, compared to the wire mesh reinforced shotcrte. And also, the reduced rebound ratios were very larger in using steel fiber reinforced shotcrete with silica fume content of 10%, and these results are true of the shoulder and the crown. respectively.
This study aims towards the improvement of a reinforced concrete rigid-frame bridge in an effort to reduce the construction and maintenance costs, and achieve an improved seismic performance. Correspondingly, a new structural rigid connection is proposed for H-shaped steel girders and reinforcing bars at the corner of the rigid-frame structure. Both experiments and numerical analyses were performed. Prototype models were constructed and subjected to static loading tests to reveal their load-carrying capacity and failure mode. Numerical models were then developed using finite elements to evaluate the experimental results. Analyses elicited good agreement between simulation and experimental data and validated the numerical models. Moreover, the validity of the proposed rigid connection was confirmed, and the failure behavior was clarified. Finally, a full-size model of the reinforced concrete rigid-frame bridge with H-shaped steel girders was constructed and subjected to destructive loading tests to evaluate structural integrity of the proposed rigid connection.
The purpose of this study is to measure the electrical conductivity of cementitious composites as an early step to obtain shielding performance by mixing various type of steel fiber into cementitious composites, the main building material of protection facility, to shield electromagnetic pulse (EMP) damage. Fiber such as conductors as amorphous metallic fiber, hooked steel fiber, and smooth steel fiber are mixed into cementitious composites to give electrical conductivity and measure the impedance of concrete using LCR meter. By doing this, the electrical conductivity of each type of steel fiber reinforced cementitious composites (FRCC) is compared.
