The inspection for steam generator tubes of nuclear power plants is performed by eddy current test method. In the current, human experts should check enormous amounts of eddy current(EC) signals to find abnormal ones on the computer screen. This method could cause a few problems. The purpose of this paper is to develop an expert system which can automatically evaluate EC signals of steam generator tubes. Since this expert system can replace or help human experts, the reliability in EC signal evaluation can be improved, and the required man-power can be reduced. Additionally, application of this system can shorten the overhaul period, contribute to a safe operation of the nuclear power plant.

Structural analyses are preformed for the high pressure steam turbine casings of the nuclear and the fossil power plants. An axisymmetric boundary element program for analysis of the casings is developed and applied in the process of practical structural design. To show the useful-ness and accuracy of the developed program results of the analysis are compared with those of the finite element analysis under hydrostatic test pressure, To check the validity of the axisymmetric numerical analysis of the casings the stresses resulting from the hydrostatic test pressure are measured using the strain gate. The results of the numerical analyses are compared and discussed with those of the experiments.
The contribution of damage mechanisms to failure of steam turbine casing made of Cr-Mo-V steel was investigated. Creep-fatigue interaction on the HP side corner of turbine casing was revealed as the root cause of the catastrophic failure performed by metallurgical analysis. The steady-state pressure and transient thermal stress were analyzed based on the actual operating condition of the thermal plant. Damage of creep-fatigue interaction to crack initiation was evaluated with multiaxial effects. The contribution ratio of creep and fatigue to the crack initiation was estimated to 3:1. Temporary geometrical correct action with repair weld was executed. For long-term operation, design improvement of casing equipment for creep resistance should be needed.
A nonlinear process-model based control for main steam temperature control of a 100MW oil-fired drum-type fossil power plant is delveloped and its performances are compared to those of the conventional PID control. The process model for simulation is derived based "first priciple approach" and is validated in steady and transient conditions. The model is in good agreements with the field test data. Performances of the nonlinear PMBC for main steam temperature control are far superior to those of PID in all aspects for the disturbances of ramp increase in load and step change in fuel Btu value.
Many years ago, most of thermal power plants built in this country were of subcritical pressure, of medium or small size, of constant pressure operation, of drum type steam generator. But, nowadays, almost all of them were of high efficiency, of supercritical pressure, of great capacity(about 500MW), of sliding pressure operation, of once through type steam generator. Presently built once through boiler introduces turbine bypass systems to variable pressure operation which eliminates unexpected materials in boiler tube during startup, minimizes fuel loss by short startup period, eventually improves total efficiency and power system stability

The robust controller synthesis and analysis of the water level process in the U-tube system generator (UTSG) is addressed in this paper. The parameter uncertainties of the steam generator (SG) are modeled as multiplicative perturbations which are normalized by designing suitable weighting functions. The relative errors of the nominal SG model with respect to the other operating power level models are employed to specify the weighting functions for normalizing the plant uncertainties. Then, a robust controller is designed based on ${\mu}$-synthesis and D-K iteration, and its stability robustness is verified over the whole range of power operations. A gain-scheduled controller with $H_{\infty}$-synthesis is also designed to compare its robustness with the proposed controller. The stability analysis is accomplished and compared with the previous QFT design. The ${\mu}$-analysis of the system shows that the proposed controller has a favorable stability robustness for the whole range of operating power conditions. The proposed controller response is simulated against the power level deviation in start-up and shutdown stages and compared with the other concerning controllers.
During the Pre-service Inspection for Wolsong Unit 3&4 in 1997/1998 respectively, 17 Distorted Roll Transition indications(over expanded beyond tubesheet secondary face) were identified at the Unit 4 (S/G B, D). Six(6) tubes out of these tubes were plugged in 1998. However the first Periodic Inspection identified additional 110 indications in 1999 and 2000. The additionally identified 110 indication call, not reported at the Pre-service Inspection, are; 2 Not-Finally-Expanded-Tubes and 108 Distorted Roll Transition tubes. Design limit of each Steam Generator tube Plugging is 6.4%. Plugging was performed by the Steam Generator manufacturer under the warranty. When Distorted Roll Transition indications were first identified on the Unit 4 in 1998 the degree of Over-expansion was measured using an inner dial-gage to make the disposition of Nonconformance report. 2 Not-Finally-Expanded-Tubes were plugged and 10 tubes out of 108 Distorted Roll Transition Tubes were also plugged as a preventive measure.
Most fossil power plants and many critical components will be approaching the end of their nominal design life. At the same time, utilities are finding it economically attractive to extend the use of these plants for several more years, Especially Main steam pipe that operated under high temperature and pressure, often under the more severe operating conditions associated with cycling duty, is most important pipe system and critical component in fossil power plant. To extend the viability of older pipe system and to improve the operation and maintenance reliability, some technologies of precise diagnosis and life management have evolved out of the necessity. The purpose of this study is to descrive the related technologies and show the example of one power plants. The purpose of this study is to descrive the related technologies and show the example of one power plants. The stress analysis was done using ANSYS FEM Code. The branch area from main steam to turbine was the high stressed zone. To evaluate the degradation of the pipe material, replica, visual check, magnetic test, hardness test were done at the welding spot. The degradation level of welding point was E/F, so the remaining life of the welded area was about 0-25%.
A total loss of all heat sinks is considered a severe accident with a low probability of occurrence. Following a total loss of all heat sinks, the degasser/condenser relief valves (DCRV) become the sole means available for the depressurization of the primary heat transport system. If a nuclear power plant has a total loss of heat sinks accident, high-temperature steam and differential pressure between the primary heat transport system (PHTS) and the steam generator (SG) secondary side can cause a SG tube creep rupture. To protect the PHTS during a total loss of all heat sinks accident, a sufficient depressurization capability of the degasser/condenser relief valve and the SG tube integrity is very important. Therefore, an accurate estimation of the discharge through these valves is necessary to assess the impact of the PHTS overprotection and the SG tube integrity of the primary circuit. This paper describes the analysis of DCRV discharge capacity and the SG tube integrity under a total loss of all heat sink using the CATHENA code. It was found that the DCRV's discharge capacity is enough to protect the overpressure in the PHTS, and the SG tube integrity is maintained in a total loss of all heat accident.
HRSG (Heat Recovery Steam Generator) is a boiler to recover heat from the exhaust gas of an engine and to generate steam for more power generation or process. For the HRSG, water-tube type boiler is commonly adopted to accommodate the working pressure or capacity requirement of the system. The water-tube type boiler has a steam drum to separate steam from the water-steam mixture supplied from the evaporator tube (riser). The drum should be sized properly to separate the steam by the gravity and auxiliary internals, such as a demister, which are installed to filter the steam. To size the steam drum and to estimate the filter efficiency of drum internals, the velocity distribution inside the drum needs to be identified. In the present study, a series of CFD has been conducted to find the velocity distributions inside steam drums for conventional HRSGs and water-tube type industrial boilers. The velocity distributions obtained from the simulation have been normalized and a correlation to predict them has been found. The correlation is applied to the steam drum design by determining a proper position of a demister to show proper separation performance.
