Coal Gasification Performance with Key Operating Variables (주요 운전 변수에 따른 석탄의 가스화 성능 예측)

  • Gasification converts coal and other feedstocks into a very clean and usable gas, called syngas, that can be used to produce a wide variety products such as electricity, chemicals, transports fuels, hydrogen production, etc. This paper was studied the gasification performance effects with the variation of the gasification operating parameters such as the feeding amounts of oxygen, steam and coal. When $O_2/coal$ ratio was below 0.8, $H_2$ mole % was increased as increasing $O_2/coal$ ratio. CO mole % was increased when $O_2/coal$ ratio was below 1.2 as increasing the $O_2/coal$ ratio. As increasing steam/coal ratio, $H_2$ mole %was increased and CO mole % was decreased. The $O_2/coal$ and steam/coal ratio was $0.8{\sim}0.9$ and $0.0{\sim}0.4$, respectively, to keep the proper gasification condition that the gasifier temperature was $1300^{\circ}C{\sim}1450^{\circ}C$ and the cold gas efficiency was over 76%.

  • Hydrogen can be produced by gasification of biomass and other combustible fuels. Depending on oxydant agents, syngas or producer gas compositions become quite different. Since biomass has limited amount of hydrogen including moisture in it, the hydrogen concentration in the syngas is about 15% when air is supplied for oxidant agent. Experiments were conducted to investigate the channges in hydrogen concentrations in syngas with different oxidant agent conditions, fuel conditions, and external heat supply. Allothermal reaction resulted in higher concentrations of hydrogen with the supply of steam over air, reaching over 60%. Hydrogen is produced by water-gas and water-gas shift reactions. These reactions are endothermic and require enough heat. Autothermal reaction occurred in the downdraft gasifier used in the experiment did not provide enough heat in the reactions for hydrogen production. Steam seems a more desirable oxidant agent in producing the syngas with higher concentrations of hydrogen from biomass gasifications since nitrogen is included in syngas when air is used.

Study on Kinetics and Syngas Production of Sewage Sludge Gasification (하수슬러지 가스화의 kinetics 및 합성가스 생산 연구)

  • Gasification characteristics and gas produced from a sewage sludge char were analyzed by using a thermobalance reactor, which is used for a reaction kinetic analysis by measuring weight change of materials at a desired temperature. Gasification reaction rate increased with increasing temperature and steam partial pressure due to the promotion of gasification reaction. Three models of gas-solid reaction were applied to the reaction kinetics analysis and modified volumetric reaction model was an appropriated model for the steam gasification of the sewage sludge char. Apparent activation energy and pre-exponential factors were evaluated as 155.5 kJ/mol and $14,087s^{-1}atm^{-1}$, respectively. The order of reaction on steam partial pressure was 0.68. Gas analysis was performed at $900^{\circ}C$ and hydrogen concentration was highest in the gas concentrations, which increased with increasing the steam partial pressure. Hydrogen concentration increased the most and hydrogen concentration in the produced gas was 2-4 times higher than that of carbon monoxide due to the gasification and water gas shift reaction.

  • Lignite of low rank coal and petroleum coke of high sulfur content can be high potential energy sources for coal gasification process because of their plentiful supply. The kinetic study of steam gasification has been performed in an atmospheric thermobalance with wood chip, lignite, bituminous, anthracite, pet-coke. The effects of gasification temperature($600{\sim}850^{\circ}C$) and partial pressure of steam(30~90 kPa) on the gasification rate have been investigated. The modified volumetric reaction model was applied to the experimental data to describe the behavior of carbon conversion and to evaluate the needed kinetic parameters. Lignite and wood chip with high volatile content showed high average gasification rates comparing to other fuel and thus they might be proper fuel for gasification processes. The activation energies for wood chip, lignite, bituminous, anthracite, and pet-coke through Arrhenius plot were found to be 260.3, 167.9, 134.6, 82.2, 168.9 kJ/mol, respectively. The expression of apparent reaction rates for steam gasification of various chars have been proposed as basic information for the design of coal gasification processes.

  • Biomass and low-grade coals are known to be better potential sources of energy compared to crude oil and natural gas since these materials are readily available and found to have large reserves, respectively. Gasification of these carbonaceous materials produced syngas for chemical synthesis and power generation. Woodchip, sawdust and lignite were gasified with steam in a thermobalance reactor under atmospheric pressure in order to evaluate their kinetic rate information. The effects of gasification temperature ($600{\sim}900^{\circ}C$) and partial pressure of steam (20~90 kPa) on the gasification rate were investigated. The three different types of gas-solid reaction models were applied to the experimental data to predict the behavior of the gasification reactions. The modified volumetric model predicted the conversion data well, thus the model was used to evaluate kinetic parameters in this study. The observed activation energy of biomass, sawdust and lignite gasification reactions were found to be in reasonable range and their rank was found to be sawdust > woodchip > lignite. The expression of apparent reaction rates for steam gasification of the three solids was proposed to provide basic information on the design of coal gasification processes.

Overall Performance characteristic for 300MW Taean IGCC Plant (300MW 태안 IGCC 플랜트 종합성능 특성)

  • As a part of the government renewable energy policy, KOWEPO is constructing 300MW IGCC plant in Taean. IGCC plant consists of gasification block, air separation unit and power block, which performance test is separately conducted. Overall performance test for IGCC plant is peformed to comply with ASME PTC 46. Major factors affected on the overall efficiency for IGCC plant are external conditions, each block performance(gasification, ASU, power block), water/steam integration and air integration. Performance parameters of IGCC plant are cold gas efficiency, oxygen consumption, sensible heat recovery of syngas cooler for gasification block and purity of oxygen, flow amount of oxygen and nitrogen, power consumption for air separation unit and steam/water integration among the each block. The gas turbine capacity applied to the IGCC plant is 20 percent higher than NGCC gas turbine due to the low caloric heating value of syngas, therefor it is possible to utilize air integration between gas turbine and air separation unit to improve overall efficiency of the IGCC plant and there is a little impact on the ambient condition. It is very important to optimize the air integration design with consideration to the optimized integration ratio and the reliable operation. Optimized steam/water integration between power block and gasification block can improve overall efficiency of IGCC plant where the optimized heat recovery from gasification block should be considered. Finally, It is possibile to achieve the target efficiency above 42 percent(HHV, Net) for 300MW Taean IGCC plant by optimized design and integration.

  • Catalytic steam reforming of tar produced from biomass gasification was conducted using several Ni-based catalysts. K and Mn were used as a promoter over $Ni/Ru/Al_2O_3$ catalyst. The pellet and monolith type catalysts were prepared and applied to lab and bench-scale biomass gasification system. The $Ni/Ru-K/Al_2O_3$ catalyst shown higher performance than $Ni/Ru-Mn/Al_2O_3$ catalyst at low temperature range.

  • Steam gasification of sawdust char was performed in a thermobalance reactor at high temperature. Gasification temperature was changed from $850^{\circ}C$ to $1400^{\circ}C$ and steam partial pressure was 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7 atm. Three models of gas-solid reaction were applied to the reaction kinetics analysis and modified volumetric model was an appropriate model. Reaction control regime and diffusion control regime were distinct depending on the temperature. Apparent activation energy and pre-exponential factors for both of the regimes were evaluated and the effects of steam partial pressure were examined. $H_2$ concentration in the produced gas was two times higher than that of CO due to the gasification accompanying by the water gas shift reaction.

  • The aim of this study is to find out the condition that generates maximum $H_2$ through the calculation of equilibrium model with conditions of pyrolysis gases of Refuse Plastic Fuel(RPF). This study deals with the computational simulation of a RPF gasification using an equilibrium model based on minimization of the Gibbs free energy. An equilibrium analysis was carried out to determine species composition of Syngas in RPF gasification and reactions to variation of temperature, $O_2$/Fuel ratio and Steam/Fuel ratio. Calculated results showed that $O_2$/Fuel ratio, Steam/Fuel ratio and temperature affected on mole fraction of $H_2$, CO.

  • Biomass gasification is a promising technology for producing a fuel gas which is useful for power generation systems. In biomass gasification processes, tar formation often causes some problems such as pipeline plugging. Thus, proper tar treatment is necessary. So far, nickel (Ni)-based catalysts have been intensively studied for the catalytic tar removal. However, the deactivation of Ni-based catalysts takes place because of coke deposition and sintering of Ni metal particles. To overcome these problems, we have been using ruthenium (Ru)-based catalyst for tar removal. It is reported by Okada et al., that a Ru/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst is very effective for preventing the carbon deposition during the steam reforming of hydrocarbons. Also, this catalyst is more active than the Ni-based catalyst at a low steam to carbon ratio (S/C). Benzene was used for the tar model compound because it is the main constituent of biomass tar and also because it represents a stable aromatic structure apparent in tar formed in biomass gasification processes. The steam reforming process transforms hydrocarbons into gaseous mixtures constituted of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), carbon monoxide (CO), methane ($CH_4$) and hydrogen ($H_2$).
