  • This paper proposes a SSSC(Static Synchronous Series Compensator) power flow model to be incorporated into power flow calculation for the steady state analysis of the power system. SSSC provides controllable compensating voltage, which is in quadrature with the line current, over an capacitive and an inductive range, independently of the magnitude of the line current. This SSSC model is obtained from the injection model for series connected VSC(Voltage Source Converter) by adding a constraint that the injected voltage should be in quadrature with the line current. In this paper the static model is implemented into the continuation power-flow (CPF) program. It is shown that SSSC has its intrinsic superiority over TCSC in controllable power flow range.

  • Distributions of the parameters in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) has been analyzed numerically under steady-state and isothermal conditions. The distributions of the crucial parameters (e.g., temperature and pressure) in a PEMFC have a major impact on its safe and efficient operation. This paper predicts the performance of the model electrode plates by calculating the pressure and temperature distributions of working fluid. The calculated results of pressure and temperature at exit condition shows good agreement to experiments and gives details of flow pattern inside of electrode plates.

  • When the circuit-breaker switches off, an electric arc is established between the contacts. It is very important to understand the arc characteristics for the design of a circuit breaker. This article describes the theoretical analysis of the arc characteristics by means of energy integral method when convection dominated low current arcs are produced in the dual-airflow nozzle of a model interrupter. In order to investigate the arc radius, the average electric field strength and the arc voltage, the arc column is divided into two regions, and then the energy conservation equation is applied to the arc in each region together with the axial cold flow mass flux function, steady-state mass balance equation and Ohm's law. The results show good agreements with those of other researchers.

  • A simulation of contaminant dispersion in a water reservoir has been done using 2-D finite difference method(FDM). The steady state velocity field of the reservoir was computed using stream function-vorticity formulation of Wavier-Stokes equation and continuity equation. Based on the computed steady state velocity field, the transient convective diffusion equation of the contaminant dispersion was computed. For the 1m$\times$1m reservoir model with inlet and outlet attached, it was shown that the center of circulation located toward right. For the numerical values of v =0.01($\textrm{cm}^2$/s) and D=0.6($\textrm{cm}^2$/s) and the flow of 50($\textrm{cm}^3$/s ), it was determined that the outflow had to be shut down in 18 seconds to prevent from severe pollution. Also the required time was computed to be 6 seconds for the inflow of 100 ($\textrm{cm}^3$/s). The result of this study is considered, hopefully, to be useful for the design of the water reservoir systems that are the subjects to various contamination.

  • This paper presents the new unified power flow controller(UPFC) load flow algorithm using UPFC transmission line constant model. The UPFC transmission line constant model represents a function of transmission line constant(G.B) UPFC's effect in power system. It can easily be incorporated in a load flow program. The algorithm is suited for monitoring the power system state as well as determining the magnitude and Phase angle of UPFC serial voltage source.

  • The present study is concerned with the flow patterns induced by various impellers in a rectangular tank. Impellers are FBT (Flat blade turbine), PBT (Pitched blade turbine), Shroud turbine, Rushton turbine, and Helical ribbon turbine types. The solutions of flows in moving reference frames require the use of 'moving' cell zone. The moving zone approaches are based on MRF (Multiple reference frame), which is a steady-state approximation and sliding method, which is an unsteady-state approximation. Numerical results using two moving zone approaches we compared with experiments by Ranade & Joshi, which have done extensive LDA measurements of the flow generated by a standard six-bladed Rushton turbine in a cylindrical baffled vessel. In this paper, we simulated the flow patterns with above-mentioned moving zone approaches and impellers. Turbulence model used is RNG $k-{\epsilon}$ model. Sliding-mesh method is more effective than MRF for simulating the rectangular tank with inlet and outlet. RNG $k-{\epsilon}$ model strongly underestimates the velocity of experimental data and velocity by Chen & Kim's model, but it seems to be correctly predicted in overall distribution.

  • The aerodynamic performance of the pantograph of the next generation high sped train is analyzed. The calculation of the flow around pantograph is carried cut by FLUENT; by the steady state flow calculation with ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model, the lift force of the pantograph is computed. For the verification of the numerical schemes am grid systems, flow calculations are performed with the pantograph shape which was used at the experiments performed at Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI) in Japan. Then, the difference of lift force between numerical am experimental results is about 10%. Therefore, selected numerical schemes and the current grid system is adequate for the analysis am prediction of the aerodynamic performance of panthograph system. Based on these numerical schemes am grid system, the flow around pantograph of the next generation high sped train is calculated and the lift force of the pantograph is predicted; the lift force of the pantograph is about 146N.

  • numerical model is developed to estimate gas flow in the landfill site. Darcy's law, the mass conservation law, and the ideal gas state equation are combined to compose the governing equation for the steady-state and transient-state gas flows. The finite element method (FEM) is used as the numerical solution scheme. Two-dimensional radial symmetric triangular ring element is used to discretize the simulation domain. The steady state model developed in this study is compared with AIRFLOW that is a commercial model developed by Hydrologic Inc. Mass balance test is performed on the transient gas flow simulation. The developed model is applied to analyze the gas extraction experiment performed by Daewoo Institute of Construction Technology at the Nanjido landfill in 1993. The developed model was registered at Korea Computer Program Protection Foundation.

  • Transport of carbon and boron impurity ions parallel to magnetic field lines in the tokamak SOL (scrape-off layer) is numerically investigated for a one-dimensional steady state. The spatial distributions of density and velocity of the impurity ions in a steady state are calculated by finite difference method for a single-fluid model. The calculated results show that among forces acting on SOL particles thermal force produced tv plasma temperature gradient is a principal force determining the feature of impurity distribution profiles in the tokamak edge. However, strong collisional friction forces appearing dominant in front of the diverter plate restrain impurity ion flows due to temperature gradients from moving toward the midplane. Consequently, the stagnation point develops in the impurity flow by these two forces near the diverter region, in which ion flows change their directions. Impurity ions turn out to be accumulated at the stagnation points, where peaked profiles of highly-ionized state ions are relatively predominant over those of low-ionized state ions.

  • Liquid water in flow channel is an important factor that limits the steady and transient performance of PEM fuel cells. A computational fluid dynamics study based on the volume-of-fluid (VOF) multi-phase model is conducted to understand the transport behavior of liquid water in flow channel. The liquid water transport in $180^{\circ}$ bends is investigated and the effect of chamfering is discussed. The effect of wall adhesion is also considered by varying the contact angle of channel surfaces. The result of this study is believed to provide a useful guideline for design optimization of flow patterns or channel configurations of PEM fuel cells.
