Evaluation of Winding Insulation of IGBT PWM Inverter-Fed Low-Voltage Induction Motors

  • IGBT inverters have switching rise times of 0.2-2 $\mu$ sec, and have been believed to cause insulation stresses and premature motor failures. Inverter driven induction motors with high speed switching and advanced PWM techniques are widely used for variable speed applications. Recently, the insulation failures of stator winding have attracted many concerns due to high dv/dt of IGBT PWM inverter output. In this paper, the detailed insulation test results of 19 low-voltage induction motors are presented. Different types of insulation techniques are applied to 19 motors. The insulation characteristics are analyzed with partial discharge, discharge inception voltage, and dissipation factor tests. Also, breakdown tests by high voltage pulses are performed, and the corresponding breakdown voltages are obtained.

A Study on the Insulation Breakdown of Mica-Epoxy Composites (Mica-Epoxy 복합재료의 절연파괴에 관한 연구)

  • In large generators in power plants, stator winding insulations is exposed to a combination of thermal, electrical, mechanical, environmental stresses in service. These combined stresses cause insulation aging which leads to final insulation breakdown. In order to identify the breakdown mechanism, the stator winding insulation materials which are composed of mica-epoxy is analyzed by the component of materials with EDS, SEM techniques. We concluded that the potassium ions of mica are replaced by hydrogen ions at boundary area of mica-epoxy and/or mica-mica. It is proposed that through these phenomena, the conductive layers of potassium ions enable high voltage fields of multiple stresses to create voids and microcracks.

  • In order to improve the reliability of high voltage rotating machines, it is necessary to understand the breakdown mechanism of stator windings. Especially partial discharge(PD) inception and growth are important in stator winding insulation. Recently, many research on the diagnosis of stator winding insulation for large rotating machines have been developed since the 1970s. Capacitive couplers have been the most widely used sensor for on-line partial discharge detection in rotating machines. This paper deals with the electrical on-line monitor characteristics of ceramic coupler(CC) which has been developed to continuously measure the PD activity in operating high voltage motor stator windings on site. We investigated the electrical characteristics(PD quantity, breakdown voltage and frequency response) to develop CC. This paper presents frequency characteristics and laboratory test result to compare conventional 80([F] epoxy-mica coupler(EMC) and 105[pF] CC for PD measurement with 6.6㎸ model stator windings.

  • Recently, domestic electrical parts and materials without safety and reliability are avoided by consumers and introducing the product liability (PL) law. Therefore, the dependance on import product of electrical machines will be increased in the future. In this paper, high-voltage induction motor ensures reliance that can maintain the performance of machines for a long time. Furthermore, the test of reliability evaluation that predicts a remaining life and breakdown test of the stator winding are performed. Also, this paper introduces various reliability assessment tests for getting reliability of the stator winding insulation in high-voltage motor.

  • In this paper, a novel Generator On-line Diagnosis System (GODS) is proposed. This system monitors the insulation condition of the stator winding by on-line measurements of partial discharge (PD). Sensor, such as SSC (Stator Slot Coupler) and RFCT (Radio Frequency Current Transformer) are used for PD measurement. PD signals are continuously measured and digitized with a high speed A/D converter to build the database of the generator's insulation condition. Also this system can communicate with the central monitoring system via RS-485. This helps more efficient operation and maintenance of the generator.

  • A lot of R&D on the diagnosis of stator winding insulation for large rotating machines has been carried out since the 1970s. The on-line partial discharge measurement has proved to be an effective technique in the evaluation of the state of stator insulation in high voltage rotating machines. It is well known that if the discharge pulses propagate through the winding conductor, they are attenuated and delayed. In the present study, to investigate the attenuation and the time delay of discharge pulses through the winding conductor, a series of tests were conducted using a model coils and slot. Thus it could be concluded that while the high frequency pulse propagates in radiation or end-winding coupling modes, the low frequency one does in a series mode through the coil conductor.

  • On-line partial discharge(PD) diagnostic system is the most prominent systems to diagnose insulation condition for the high voltage rotating machines. Partial discharge measuring system(PDMS) series with ceramic coupler(PD detecting sensor) installed hydro generator and high voltage motor have been measured the PD data for many years. The trend of PD magnitude in the on-line PD system increased for some machines. These machines showed a same result in the conventional off-line PD test and PD magnitude decreased after stator winding insulation cleaning. This case study show that PDMS has been proved to be good results by comparing PD magnitude with on-line and off-line PD test and it is important to plan the maintenance project for the hydro generator stator winding because PD value was decreased after insulation cleaning.

  • Insulation system(200 class} for stator coil is designed for traction motor with VVVF inverter. Sample coils for stator of the traction motor were tested by accelerative thermal degradation which composed of heat, vibration, moisture, and overvoltage apply. Reliability and expected life were evaluated on the insulation system for 200 class traction motor. After aging of 10 cycles, tan ${\delta}$ increased with voltage. This result is due to increase of internal defects and change of insulation structure.

  • Partial discharge(PD) tests are used to evaluate the insulation condition of stator windings in six 6.6kV motors. These tests were conducted using a conventional partial discharge detector (PDD), turbine generator analyzer(TGA) and partial discharge analyzer(PDA). Off-line PD measurements were performed on six 6.6kV motors. PD magnitudes ranged from 740 pC to 5,100 pC at the normal line-to-ground voltage. Six 6.6kV motors have been equipped with eighteen 80pF epoxy-mica couplers(one per phase) on the motor terminal boxs. The PD pulse from sensors were measured with the TGA and PDA instruments on a normally operating motors. The PDD, TGA and PDA test results showed that internal discharge was detected in voids of the groundwall insulation.

  • During normal operation, partial discharge(PD) tests were performed using turbine generator analyzer(TGA) in high voltage motor. Epoxy-mica couplers are installed at motor terminal and analyzed PD signal using TGA. #A motor stator insulation is good because small partial discharges are detected PD pattern show that PD occurs in insulation. PD of #B motor is larger than that of #A motor and PD pattern show that positive PD larger than negative PD. It means that PD occurs between insulation and slot. And A phase PD magnitude of #B motor is large and high compare with any other phase. Therefore wedge, core and slot of #B motor need to check and repair.
