  • Objectives : This study was intended to understand characteristics of symptoms, oriental medicine prescription and laboratory test results according to elapsed time of stroke. Methods : Through the medical records of 205 stroke inpatients in the oriental medical hospital in the year 2010, we investigated manifested symptoms, administered oriental medicine prescription and clinical pathological examination results. Collected items were classified to depend on stroke types, cerebral infarction and hemorrhage. We analyzed association between manifested symptoms, the oriental medicine prescription, and laboratory test results of stroke patients and elapsed time. Chi-square tests were performed to determine the significance level of association. Results : All symptoms, prescriptions and laboratory test results in cerebral infarction patients were associated with elapsed time. Especially, symptoms, prescriptions and pathological examination results showed very high statistical significance with elapsed time (a symptom; chi-square(df)=164.3(22), p<0.001, prescription; chi-square(df)=93.5(22), p<0.001, and pathological examination results; chi-square(df)=164.3(22), p<0.0004). But in the case of cerebral hemorrhage, there was not statistical significance. Conclusions : The elapsed time of stroke may be an essential requisite in catching symptoms and prescribing for stroke patients in oriental medical treatment.

Why is 90% Confidence Interval Used When Confidence Interval Approach is Used for Testing Equivalence? (동등성 시험을 신뢰구간을 사용하여 검정하는 경우 왜 신뢰도 90%인 신뢰구간을 사용하는가?)

  • It is a convention to use 5% significance level when a statistical test is employed for clinical data. But when a confidence interval is used for testing equivalence, 90% confidence interval has often been used. When $1-{\alpha}$ confidence interval is used for hypothesis testing, its significance level is often ${\alpha}$. So it makes a confusion that the significance level is 10% if 90% confidence interval is employed for testing equivalence. In this paper I will clarify this issue by reviewing relevant papers and conducting simulation studies. I hope that it will be beneficial to statisticians in pharmaceutical companies, CROs, university hospitals.

  • It is very important to construct statistical model in order to exactly estimate the signal variance from the noisy image. By using estimated variance of original image, in general, Wiener filter is constructed, and it is applied to the noisy image. In this paper, we propose a new statistical mixture modeling of wavelet coefficients for image denoising. Firstly, a simple classification method is used to construct a significance map that captures significant property of wavelet coefficients. Based upon the significance map, the state probabilities of mixture model is computed, and signal variance is estimated by using them. Experimental results show that the proposed method yields 0.1-0.2㏈ higher PSNR than conventional methods for image denoising.

  • The statistical testing methods have been widely recognized to determine the plain and cipher texts. In fact, the randomness for a sequence from an encryption algorithm is necessary to guarantee security and reliance of cipher algorithm. Thus, the statistical randomness tests are used to discover cipher text. In this paper, we would provide the critical value for an approximate entropy test by estimating the nonlinear regression equation when the number of sequence and the level of significance are given. Thus, we can discern plan and cipher text for real problem with given number of sequence and the level of significance. Also, we confirm the fitness of the estimated critical values from the rate of success for plain or cipher text.

  • Obtaining the accurate final importance of each customer attribute (CA) is very important in the house of quality(HOQ), because it is deployed to the quality of the final product or service through the quality function deployment(QFD). The final importance is often calculated by the multiplication of the relative importance rate and the competitive priority rate. Traditionally, the sample mean is used for estimating two rates but the dispersion is ignored. This paper proposes a new approach that incorporates statistical significance to consider the dispersion of rates in determining the final importance of CA. The approach is illustrated with a design of car door for each case of crisp and fuzzy numbers.
