Statistical image reconstruction methods have played an important role in emission computed tomography (ECT) since they accurately model the statistical noise associated with gamma-ray projection data. Although the use of statistical methods in clinical practice in early days was of a difficult problem due to high per-iteration costs and large numbers of iterations, with the development of fast algorithms and dramatically improved speed of computers, it is now inevitably becoming more practical. Some statistical methods are indeed commonly available from nuclear medicine equipment suppliers. In this paper, we first describe a mathematical background for statistical reconstruction methods, which includes assumptions underlying the Poisson statistical model, maximum likelihood and maximum a posteriori approaches, and prior models in the context of a Bayesian framework. We then review a recent progress in developing fast iterative algorithms.

In this paper, we propose a new three-dimensional (3D) photon-counting integral imaging reconstruction method using a merging reconstruction process and maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). The conventional 3D photon-counting reconstruction method extracts photons from elemental images using a Poisson random process and estimates the scene using statistical methods such as MLE. However, it can reduce the photon levels because of an average overlapping calculation. Thus, it may not visualize 3D objects in severely low light environments. In addition, it may not generate high-quality reconstructed 3D images when the number of elemental images is insufficient. To solve these problems, we propose a new 3D photon-counting merging reconstruction method using MLE. It can visualize 3D objects without photon-level loss through a proposed overlapping calculation during the reconstruction process. We confirmed the image quality of our proposed method by performing optical experiments.

In PET(Positron Emission Tomography), it is necessary to use transmission scan data in order to estimate the attenuation map. Recently, there are several empirical studies in which one might be able to estimate attenuation map and activity distribution simultaneously with emissive sinogram alone without transmission scan. However, their algorithms are based on the model in which does not include the background counts term, and so is unrealistic. If the background counts component has been included in the model, their algorithm would introduce non-monotonic reconstruction algorithm which results in vain in practice. in this paper, we develop a monotonic and parallelizable algorithm for simultaneous reconstruction of both characteristics and present the validity through some simulations.

This paper presents a multiscale modeling method for sheet molding compound (SMC) composites through a novel bundle packing reconstruction algorithm based on a micro-CT (Computed Tomography) image processing. Due to the complex flow pattern during the compression molding process, the SMC composites show a spatially varying orientation and overlapping of fiber bundles. Therefore, significant inhomogeneity and anisotropy are commonly observed and pose a tremendous challenge to predicting SMC composites' properties. For high-fidelity modeling of the SMC composites, the statistical distributions for the fiber orientation and local volume fraction are characterized from micro-CT images of real SMC composites. After that, a novel bundle packing reconstruction algorithm for a high-fidelity SMC model is proposed by considering the statistical distributions. A method for evaluating specimen level's strength and stiffness is also proposed from a set of high-fidelity SMC models. Finally, the proposed multiscale modeling methodology is experimentally validated through a tensile test.
Purpose: Tongue cancer is the most common malignant tumor of the oral cavity and the ultimate goal in treatment of the cancer is not only complete excision and meticulous closure of the wound, but also, reconstruction of a demensional and functional tongue. Our study focuses on various factors, such as defect size, extent of tumor, age, application of mandibulectomy or radiotherapy, and their influences on postoperative speech and swallowing function. Methods: Our study was based on 59 patients who underwent tongue cancer operation and reconstruction of the tongue. Speech and swallowing were evaluated according to categories documented by Sultan and Teichgraeber. Patients were classified into 3 groups as partial glossectomy, hemiglossectomy and total glossectomy groups for evaluation. The average age of the patients were 51, and the mean follow-up period was 4 years 2 months. Results: The partial glossectomy group showed statistically relevant results for speech articulation and swallowing abilities compared to the total glossectomy group. In cases of defects involving the mouth floor, the group showed decreased results compared to the group without mouth floor involvement. Increased age showed decreased postoperative results with statistical significance, while mandibulectomy and radiotherapy revealed no statistically significant data. Analysis according to TNM staging resulted in decreased functional result with advanced staging without statistical significance. Conclusion: To summarize the factors influencing the functional outcome in tongue reconstruction, younger patients and early stage cancer with minimal surgical extent revealed more satisfying results while mandibulectomy and radiation did not have influence on our analysis. Addition of various influencing factors and studies with longer follow up periods on our patient groups may provide effective data for more satisfying functional outcomes in the future.

Statistical optimization algorithms have been variously developed to estimate the 3D shape and motion. However, statistical approaches are limited to analyze the sensitive effects of SfM(Shape from Motion) according to the camera's geometrical position or viewing angles and so on. This paper propose the quantitative estimation method about the uncertainties of an observation matrix by using camera imaging configuration factors predict the reconstruction ambiguities in SfM. This is a very efficient method to predict the final reconstruction performance of SfM algorithm. Moreover, the important point is that our method show how to derive the active guidelines in order to set the camera imaging configurations which can be expected to lead the reasonable reconstruction results. The experimental results verify the quantitative estimates of an observation matrix by using camera imaging configurations and confirm the effectiveness of our algorithm.
Background: The fibular free flap has been used as the standard methods of segmental mandibular reconstruction. The objective of mandibular reconstruction not only includes restored continuity of the mandible but also the recovery of optimal function. This paper emphasizes the advantage of the fibular free flap reconstruction over that of locking mandibular reconstruction plate fixation. Methods: The hospital charts of all patients (n=20) who had a mandibular reconstruction between 1994 and 2013 were retrospectively reviewed. Eight patients had plateonly fixation of the mandible, and the remaining 12 had vascularized fibular free flap reconstruction. Complications and outcomes were reviewed and compared between the 2 groups via statistical analysis. Results: Overall complication rates were significantly lower in the fibular flap group (8.3%) than in the plate fixation group (87.5%; p =0.001). Most (7/8) patients in the plate fixation group had experienced plate-related late complications, including plate fracture or exposure. In the fibular flap group, no complications were observed, except for a single case of donor-site wound dehiscence (1/12). Conclusion: The fibular free flap provides a more stable support and additional soft tissue support for the plate, thereby minimizing the risk of plate-related complications. Fibular free flap is the most reliable option for mandibular reconstruction, and we believe that the flap should be performed primarily whenever possible.
Purpose: The high success rate of free flap transfers is well documented in previous literature, and is possible due to the early detection of vascular compromise and timely reoperation. We specifically analyzed the operative results of immediate and delayed reconstruction with free transverse rectus abdominis musculocutaneous(TRAM) flap respectively in order to reveal its distinctive features on timing and causes of vascular compromise. Methods: The senior author operated on 158 patients, 161 cases of free TRAM flap for breast reconstruction. 51 patients underwent delayed reconstruction, whilst immediate reconstruction was performed in the other 107 patients. All patients were monitored every 3 hours for the first 3 days. We reviewed medical records of all patients, and tested statistical significance with the Fisher's test. Results: Reoperation was performed in 20 cases, but the cases include hematoma with bleeding focus and arterial anastomosis site rupture due to abrupt arm abduction. We performed reoperation in 15 cases of suspicious vascular compromise. Flap compromise was noticed mostly within 24 hours, but not longer than 72 hours. Venous compromise was dominant by 11 cases (73.3%). There was difference in the timing of flap compromise between immediate and delayed reconstruction. All the cases of delayed reconstruction did not show signs of vascular compromise after 12 hours postoperatively. On the other hand, cases of vascular compromise were observed until 72 hours postoperatively in cases of immediate reconstruction. Conclusion: Delayed reconstruction showed vascular compromise within 12 hours postoperatively, while immediate reconstruction showed compromised until the 3rd postoperative day. If more aggressive monitoring is maintained during this period, we believe salvage of flaps may be increased with more efficiency.

In electrical impedance tomography (EIT), various image reconstruction algorithms have been used in order to compute the internal resistivity distribution of the unknown object with its electric potential data at the boundary. Mathematically, the EIT image reconstruction algorithm is a nonlinear ill-posed inverse problem. This paper presents a simulated annealing technique as a statistical reconstruction algorithm for the solution of the static EIT inverse problem. Computer simulations with 32 channels synthetic data show that the spatial resolution of reconstructed images by the proposed scheme is improved as compared to that of the mNR algorithm at the expense of increased computational burden.
