In order to prepare an efficient solution for PM10 reduction in underground stations, the authors measured PM10 concentration levels every 30 minutes in the concourse, platform, and tunnel of Gaehwasan Station of Seoul's subway line 5. Through a correlation analysis of each changing pattern of PM10 concentration, the direction and velocity of diffusion in underground stations were estimated. The PM10 concentration levels were highest in the tunnel, followed by the platform and concourse. PM10 concentrations in the tunnel, platform, and concourse showed a pattern of increasing in the rush hours and decreasing in the non-rush hours. According to the statistical analysis of PM10 concentrations and changing patterns in each location, the higher PM10 concentration in the tunnel expanded to the platform, and some from the platform expanded to the concourse. Therefore, to efficiently reduce PM10 concentrations, it is essential to detect the centralized generation, diffusion factor, expanding route, expanding measure, and other variables and to remove or reduce the diffusion factor and level. Through operating the ventilation system in the right time frame while the PM10 concentration level increases, the power consumption and peak power consumption can be reduced.
The purpose of this study was to estimate shear bond strength according to difference in Targis surface treatment and storage condition. 140 non-carious extracted human molars and Targis D210(Ivoclar, Liechtenstein) were used in the present study and were divided into 7 experimental groups respectively according to surface treatment of Targis. Group 1 ; No treatment, Group 2 ; $50{\mu}m$ aluminium oxide blasting, Group 3 ; 4% HF etching for 3 minutes, Group 4 ; 4% HF etching after blasting, Group 5 ; silane treatment after blasting, Group 6 ; silane treatment after 4% HF etching, Group 7 ; silane treatment after blasting and 4% HF etching. In Each group, one half of 20 specimens was stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours and the other half was stored at atmosphere for 24 hours respectively. Dentin surface was etched with 10% $H_3PO_4$ for 15 seconds and luting cement(Variolink II, Vivadent, Liechtenstein) was applied by manufacturer's recommendation. Shear bond strength for each group was then measured. To examine the failure patterns after shear bond test and to observe the change after surface treatment of Targis. Specimens were fabricated and observed under the SEM. Statistical analysis was performed by One Way ANOVA test and t-test. The results were as follows ; 1. The shear bond strength of the groups stored in water significantly lower than that of groups stored at atmosphere (P<0.05). 2. There was no significant difference in shear bond strength in groups stored in water (P>0.05). 3. The shear bond strength without surface treatment of Targis were lowest among all experimental groups in atmosphere condition(P<0.05). 4. There was no significant difference in bond strength between groups using the silane or not(P>0.05). 5. The groups treated by blasting, hydrofluoric acid and silane sequentially showed highest bond strength than that of other groups in atmosphere condition, but there was no significant difference(P>0.05). 6 The proportions of the specimens showing the mixed fracture failure were 20% in HF etching group and blasting + HF group, 40% in blasting + HF + silane group in atmosphere condition. All the specimens stored in water showed adhesive fracture failure.
Soil seed bank community contributes to the long-term conservation of plant diversity and vegetation dynamics, and their decreasing diversity and density with soil depth provide critical perspectives (deterministic and stochastic) for understanding the community disassembly process. We analyzed changes in species composition and diversity and structuring patterns by soil layer (top and bottom), including surface vegetation, in Gwangneung Forest, a mature forest with a vegetation climate in the temperate central part of the Korean Peninsula. From two layers of soil collected with a vertical difference of 10 cm, 934 specimens of 27 families, 40 genera, 44 species, three varieties, and 47 taxa, germinated. Although species diversity and germination density decreased in most comparative characteristics, including growth type, there was no statistical significance due to large deviations. Within-group variability of species composition was similar in the upper and lower soils, as was the decline pattern in co-occurred species (ζ-diversity) and change in species retention probability. The structuring process of the community composition in the two soil layers was fitted with an exponential correlation rather than a power function, demonstrating the dominance of the stochastic process. The pattern in diversity and species turnover according to soil depth in Gwangneung Forest was discovered to be structured by stochastic random events, such as seed vertical movement rather than interaction with trait characteristics.
Archaeogenetics is an academic discipline that aims to establish scientific facts of human history by integrating ancient DNA analyses with archaeological and anthropological evidence. After ancient DNA research was initiated about 30 years ago, it has been innovated so rapidly that the range of analysis has been extended toward the whole genome sequence of ancient genomes in recent 10 years. By this development, researchers have been able to study in detail the origins and migration patterns of hominin species and ancient human populations by approaches of evolutionary genetics. This study has reviewed main principles of the archaeogenetic analysis and the current trends of ancient genome studies with recent achievements. While sampling techniques and statistical analyses have been improved, typical research methods have been established by the findings on hominins and ancient western Eurasia populations. Recently, archaeogenecists have been applying the methods to studying those in other geographical areas. Nonetheless, there is still the lack of ancient genome research about populations in Eastern Asia including the Korean peninsula. This review ultimately aims to predict possibilities and promise of future ancient genome studies of ancient Korean populations.
The intervertebral foramen is formed by two adjacent vertebrae and an intervertebral disc. Previous studies examining the foramen have been performed using various methods. The author obtained characteristics of the intervertebral foramen based on silicon mold. The author used 18 cadavers and dissected the lumbar intervertebral foramen. First, positional levels of the spinal nerve in the intervertebral foramen were measured. Second, after being removed all tissues covering the intervertebral, bony foramen was filled with melted silicon to mold the cross section. Subsequently, the solidified silicon mold was removed and stamped on a paper. The paper was scanned and analyzed area, perimeter, height and width of the intervertebral foramen on a computer. Area (average, $9.43mm^2$) and perimeter (average, 48.02 mm) did not show any statistical significant pattern for any lumbar vertebral levels. However, the height and width significantly differed at the fifth lumbar vertebra, which had the shortest height (the fifth, 13.00 mm; average, 15.78 mm) and longest width (the fifth, 8.61 mm; average, 7.87 mm), although there were similar patterns in case of area and perimeter of the first to fourth lumbar vertebra. Height had a decrease tendency while width had an increase tendency both from the second to fifth lumbar vertebra. Spinal nerves went through near the intervertebral disc level from the first to fourth lumbar vertebra, although they passed below the disc at the fifth level. This study provides a different view of methodology for the 3-dimensional aspect for the intervertebral foramen. Results of this study may indicate that height and width of the intervertebral foramen changed along all lumbar vertebral levels; nevertheless, area and perimeter of the intervertebral foramen remained constant.
Objectives: The rapidly changing dietary environment requires a study that addresses the status of middle and high school students regarding their consumption of convenience food sold at convenience stores. Methods: This study examined adolescents' lifestyle patterns, dietary habits, and status of consuming convenience food at convenience stores. A total of 659 students (329 middle school students and 330 high school students) in Incheon participated in this questionnaire survey. Results: The mean age of the subjects was 13.7 years for the middle school students, and 16.6 years for the high school students. The gender and grade distributions in the middle and high school students were similar. The middle school students reported that they spent more time using electronic devices (p<0.001) or watching TV (p<0.001) than high school students. More than 60% of middle and high school students consumed convenience food at convenience stores without statistical difference between the two groups. The main reason for consuming convenience food from convenience stores was its convenience followed by taste in both groups. Despite the high frequency of consuming convenience food, the students rarely checked the nutrition labels at the time of purchase. On the other hand, they were still most concerned about the nutritional value of the convenience foods when they consumed convenience foods. The most frequently consumed convenience food was ramyon in both groups. Significant positive correlations were observed between the frequency of consuming convenience food at convenience stores and lifestyle factors for the middle school students, including monthly allowance, time for using electronic devices, and number of private lessons. For the high school students, however, the only monthly allowance had a significant positive correlation with the consumption. Conclusions: Adolescents are increasingly exposed to convenience foods and relevant nutritional issues are a concern. Therefore, a dietary environment that is adequately formed for the healthy development of youth as well as systematic nutrient education that is appropriately designed for both middle and high school students is required.
The main purpose of this study is to figure out the spending tendency of elderly consumers for their grandchildren. To this end, a detailed survey was carried out for two months from October 1 to November 30, 2011. The respondents consist of 461 elderly consumers over 60s who have grandchildren in elementary grades. Among the gathered data, relevant information was sorted out, coded, and then turned into statistical figures through SPSS 18.0 program. The outcome of this research is explained in the following three respects. First of all, based upon factor and cluster analysis, the role of grandparents has been divided into three categories, which are a babysitter, a friend and a visitor. Depending on their role, the surveyed elderly have been split into three groups-'Friend Group', 'Formal Visitor Group', 'Attached Group'. Second, to give you an overview of the consumption trend of the three groups, this study has reviewed the expenditure items, spending amount and consumption patterns, and made a list of products and services they purchased for the past one year for their grandchildren. Third, given the probability of wealth transfer to the next generation, there is a compelling need to figure out the purchase pattern of financial products. The elderly have been categorized into those with bank deposits only and those with a mixture of bank deposits and other financial products (insurance, fund, stocks, gold, dollar etc.).
In order to study interactions between climate change and air quality, a modeling system including the downscaling scheme has been developed in the integrated manner. This research focuses on the development of a downscaling method to utilize CCSM3 outputs as the initial and boundary conditions for the regional climate model, MM5. Horizontal/vertical interpolation was performed to convert from the latitude/longitude and hybrid-vertical coordinate for the CCSM3 model to the Lambert-Conformal Arakawa-B and sigma-vertical coordinate for the MM5 model. A variable diagnosis was made to link between different variables and their units of CCSM and MM5. To evaluate the dynamic downscaling performance of this study, spatial distributions were compared between outputs of CCSM/MM5 and NRA/MM5 and statistic analysis was conducted. Temperature and precipitation patterns of CCSM/MM5 in summer and winter showed a similar pattern with those of observation data in East Asia and the Korean Peninsula. In addition, statistical analysis presented that the agreement index (AI) is more than 0.9 and correlation coefficient about 0.9. Those results indicate that the dynamic downscaling system built in this study can be used for the research of interaction between climate change and air quality.
Doellingeria scabra Thunb. (syn. Aster scaber Thunb.), a perennial herb in the family Asteraceae, is frequently found in the wild mountain regions of Korea. This aim of this work was to measure the characteristics of patchiness of D. scabra in a local population on Mt. Maebong in Taeback-ci, Gangwon-do. The spatial distribution pattern of this species was estimated by analyzing ecological data by methods including the index of dispersion, Lloyd's mean crowding, and Morisita's index. The mean population density of the D. scabra population was 2.94. The D. scabra individuals were uniformly or randomly distributed in small-scale plots and were aggregately distributed in two large-scale plots ($16{\times}32m^2$ and $32{\times}32m^2$). The mean crowding ($M^*$) was 0.916. The mean patchiness index (PAI) was 0.796. Morisita's coefficient tended to decrease the density of the population as the plot size increased. The expected value of Eberhardt's index ($I_E$) in the local population was 2.623. Moran's I of D. scabra significantly differed from the expected value in 6 of 8 cases (75.0%). The first five classes were positive, with four showing statistical significance, indicating similarity among individuals in the first four distance classes (I-IV, 8 m), The results presented here could provide a theoretical basis for the conservation of D. scabra (Korean: chamchwi) and for the rehabilitation and sustainable management of forest ecosystems on Mt. Maebong, as well as on other mountains.
Background: Winged scapular (WS) causes muscle imbalance with abnormal patterns when moving the arm. In particular, the over-activation of the upper trapezius (UT) and decrease in activity of the lower trapezius (LT) and serratus anterior (SA) produce abnormal scapulohumeral rhythm. Therefore, the SA requires special attention in all shoulder rehabilitation programs. In fact, many previous studies have been devoted to the SA muscle strength training needed for WS correction. Objects: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of shoulder girdle muscle and ratio according to the angle of shoulder abduction and external weight in supine position. Methods: Twenty three WS patients participated in this experiment. They performed scapular protraction exercise in supine position with the weights of 0 kg, 1 kg, 1.5 kg, and 2 kg at shoulder abduction angles of $0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$. The angle and weight applications were randomized. Surface electromyography (EMG) was used to collect the EMG data of the SA, pectoralis major (PM), and UT during the exercise. The ratio of PM/SA and UT/SA was confirmed. Two-way repeated analyses of variance were used to determine the statistical significance of SA, PM, and UT and the ratios of PM/SA and UT/SA. Results: There was a significant difference in SA according to angle (p<.05). Significant differences were also identified depending on the angle and weight (p<.05). The angle of abduction at $0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and weight of 2 kg showed the highest SA activity. However, there was no significant difference between PM and UT (p>.05). There was a significant difference between PM/SA and UT/SA in ratio of muscle activity according to angle (p<.05). Significant differences were found at PM/SA angles of $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ (p<.05). For UT/SA, significant difference was only observed at $90^{\circ}$ (p<.05). Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, in order to strengthen the SA, it was found to be most effective to use 1 and 1.5 kg weights with abduction angles of $0^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$ at shoulder protraction in supine position.
