Non-stationary vibration and super-harmonic resonances of nonlinear viscoelastic nano-resonators

  • This paper analyzes the non-stationary vibration and super-harmonic resonances in nonlinear dynamic motion of viscoelastic nano-resonators. For this purpose, a new coupled size-dependent model is developed for a plate-shape nano-resonator made of nonlinear viscoelastic material based on modified coupled stress theory. The virtual work induced by viscous forces obtained in the framework of the Leaderman integral for the size-independent and size-dependent stress tensors. With incorporating the size-dependent potential energy, kinetic energy, and an external excitation force work based on Hamilton's principle, the viscous work equation is balanced. The resulting size-dependent viscoelastically coupled equations are solved using the expansion theory, Galerkin method and the fourth-order Runge-Kutta technique. The Hilbert-Huang transform is performed to examine the effects of the viscoelastic parameter and initial excitation values on the nanosystem free vibration. Furthermore, the secondary resonance due to the super-harmonic motions are examined in the form of frequency response, force response, Poincare map, phase portrait and fast Fourier transforms. The results show that the vibration of viscoelastic nanosystem is non-stationary at higher excitation values unlike the elastic ones. In addition, ignoring the small-size effects shifts the secondary resonance, significantly.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of mobile phone text messaging on the collision avoidance strategy for an approaching and stationary pedestrian. Method: Eighteen healthy young adults participated in this study. Each participant was asked to perform a task to walking with/without mobile phone text messaging and a task to avoid collisions with another pedestrian who was approaching or stationary during walking. Results: When text messaging with avoidance collision, it showed an early onset time, a larger mediolateral COM trajectory, trunk rotation angle and trunk rotation velocity (p<.05). Also, compared to an approaching pedestrian, when avoiding collision with a stationary pedestrian, it showed a later onset time, a lager avoidance displacement, mediolateral COM trajectory, trunk rotation angle (p<.05). Conclusion: Results suggest that mobile phone text messaging while collision avoidance leads to delay the perception stage and alters the adaptation stage. Consequently, pedestrian executed in an exaggerated avoidance action to create a greater safety margin when attending to mobile phone test messages while avoiding another pedestrian.

추세 시계열 자료의 부트스트랩 적용 (Applying Bootstrap to Time Series Data Having Trend)

  • In the simulation output analysis, bootstrap method is an applicable resampling technique to insufficient data which are not significant statistically. The moving block bootstrap, the stationary bootstrap, and the threshold bootstrap are typical bootstrap methods to be used for autocorrelated time series data. They are nonparametric methods for stationary time series data, which correctly describe the original data. In the simulation output analysis, however, we may not use them because of the non-stationarity in the data set caused by the trend such as increasing or decreasing. In these cases, we can get rid of the trend by differencing the data, which guarantees the stationarity. We can get the bootstrapped data from the differenced stationary data. Taking a reverse transform to the bootstrapped data, finally, we get the pseudo-samples for the original data. In this paper, we introduce the applicability of bootstrap methods to the time series data having trend, and then verify it through the statistical analyses.

SWT(Stationary Wavelet Transform)를 이용한 몰드변압기 방전 측정신호의 디노이징 특성 연구 (A Study on the Comparison of Denoising Performance of Stationary Wavelet Transform for Discharge Signal Data in Cast-resin Transformer)

  • The partial discharge of Cast-resin Transformer has a difficulty to be analyzed, because it is an abnormal condition signal of which stochastic characteristics varies with time variance. In this study, background noise coming from the outside of the cast-resin transformers through ground wire can be removed and only a discharge signal of which defects are simulated can be obtained, using the wavelet transform method, which is a time-frequency domain analysis technique. As a result, it was confirmed that de-noising using the SWT technique is the best efficient among three methods of the wavelet transform techniques.

Numerical analysis of oscillating square cylinder with corner radius

  • In this paper, the near wake of stationary and transversely oscillating square section cylinders with different corner radii are studied by numerical method to investigate the influence of corner radius. Six models R/D=0,0.1,0.2,0.3,0.4,0.5 (R is the corner radius and D is the characteristic dimension of the body) were studied. It was found that the corner radius of square cylinder significantly influences the flow features around the body both in stationary and oscillating conditions. Results indicate that, as R/D ratio increases, the Strouhal number increases and the separation point decrease for the stationary and oscillating cases.

  • Torsional vibration analysis in a large two -stroke low speed diesel engine and generator system for stationary power plants is performed to verify that the vibration characteristics of shafting system meet design requirements. Our own developed S/W is employed for the analysis, whose results are evaluated comparing with measurements. Vibration analysis results of the system are presented according to the change of loading(unload, 100%load, 110% load) and operating(mis-firing, uneven firing) conditions of the stationary power plants.

  • Practical ambient excitations of engineering structures usually do not comply with the stationary-white-noise assumption in traditional operational modal analysis methods due to heavy traffic, wind guests, and other disturbances. In order to eliminate spurious modes induced by non-white noise inputs, the improved stochastic subspace identification based on a delay index is proposed in this paper for a representative kind of stationary non-white noise ambient excitations, which have nonzero autocorrelation values near the vertical axis. It relaxes the stationary-white-noise assumption of inputs by avoiding corresponding unqualified elements in the Hankel matrix. Details of the improved stochastic subspace identification algorithms and determination of the delay index are discussed. Numerical simulations on a four-story frame and laboratory vibration experiments on a simply supported beam have demonstrated the accuracy and reliability of the proposed method in eliminating spurious modes under non-white noise ambient excitations.

  • The transitional characterisics of oscillations and rotational speeds from the starting to the stationary states in damped single degree of freedom systems acted upon the rotor unbalance forces are studied. Angular travel is assumed to vary with time. The theoretical analysis is obtained by using Laplace transform method. Integration involved in the theoretical results is carried out by the numerical analysis program of continuous-time linear systems to arbitrary inputs. It is evident that the transitional charcterixtics of a machine are affected remarkably by damping ratios, stationary angular velocity time and frequency ratios.

Verification of Two Least-Squares Methods for Estimating Center of Rotation Using Optical Marker Trajectory

  • An accurate and robust estimation of center of rotation (CoR) using optical marker trajectory is crucial in human biomechanics. In this regard, the performances of the two prevailing least-squares methods, the Gamage and Lasenby (GL) method, and the Chang and Pollard (CP) method, are verified in this paper. While both methods are sphere-fitting approaches in closed form and require no tuning parameters, they have not been thoroughly verified by comparison of their estimation accuracies. Furthermore, while for both methods, results for stationary CoR locations are presented, cases for perturbed CoR locations have not been investigated for any of them. In this paper, the estimation performances of the GL method and CP method are investigated by varying the range of motion (RoM) and noise amount, for both stationary and perturbed CoR locations. The difference in the estimation performance according to the variation in the amount of noise and RoM was clearly shown for both methods. However, the CP method outperformed the GL method, as seen in results from both the simulated and the experimental data. Particularly, when the RoM is small, the GL method failed to estimate the appropriate CoR while the CP method reasonably maintained the accuracy. In addition, the CP method showed a considerably better predictability in CoR estimation for the perturbed CoR location data than the GL method. Accordingly, it may be concluded that the CP method is more suitable than the GL method for CoR estimation when RoM is limited and CoR location is perturbed.
