Purpose : The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in sit-to-stand movement and static standing balance between young adults and older adults Methods : Thirty young adults and thirty older adults participated in this study. The Good Balance System was used to assess participants' sit-to-stand movement and static standing balance. The sit-to-stand movement was measured as mediolateral and anterioposterior displacement of the centre of pressure (mm/s) while sit-to-stand on a force platform, and time required to complete a sit-to-stand movement on a force platform. The static standing balance was measured as mediolateral and anterioposterior displacement of the center of pressure (mm/s) and velocity moment (mm2/s) while standing on a force platform with opened eyes and with closed eyes. Result : A significant difference was found in the mediolateral and anterioposterior center of pressure displacement and the time required to complete a sit-to-stand movement of the two groups (p<.05). A significant difference between the groups was found as to mediolateral centre of pressure displacement and the velocity moment when standing with opened eyes and with closed eyes (p<.05). Conclusion : In conclusion, older adults showed decreased sit-to-stand movement and static standing balance ability compared to the young adult. Clinicians should consider sit-to-stand and balance training for older adult.

Background: The treatment of pain in the iliotibial band friction syndrome has been difficult to determine, according to studies to date. However, recent studies have suggested that flexibility in the subacute stage of pain in the iliotibial band friction syndrome may help reduce pain. Objective: To investigate the immediate effect on pressure pain threshold and flexibility of the tensor fascia latae and iliotibial band by applying static and dynamic myofascial release foam rolling and self-stretching to adults with shortening iliotibial band. Design: Randomized controlled trial Methods: In this study, 50 subjects who were selected in advance as a randomized controlled trial were randomly allocated using a R Studio program. The included subjects were randomly allocated to three intervention groups. The static self-myofascial release 18 people, dynamic self-myofascial release group 16 people separated the self-stretching group 16 people and conducted a homogeneity check in advance. Before the start of the experiment, after of the experiment, 5 minutes after the end of the experiment, the pressure pain threshold and flexibility change for each part were measured. Results: The results of this study showed that the static self-myofascial release showed a significant difference in the pressure pain threshold in the tensor fascia latae and middle, lower part of the iliotibial band, compared with the other intervention groups (p<.05). In change of flexibility, the static self-myofascial release was significantly different than the other intervention groups (p<.05). Conclusion: The result of this study suggest that static self-myofascial release using foam roller may help to improve the pain and flexibility of the iliotibial band and to apply it as a more discerning intervention.

Fluid mixing is ubiquitous and essential in many natural and industrial systems. Understanding the mixing processes that occur in these diverse systems is essential for predicting many aspects of practical importance. The objective of this study was to develop a new mixing element and to perform the experimental investigation of flow and mixing in a static mixer that is equipped the new element and the others. Glycerin and gear oil were used as mixing fluids. Pressure drops across the static mixer elements of different designs and different numbers were measured using a hydraulic manometer The axial and cross-sectional views of tracer mixing were photographed using a digital camera. The pressure drops of SSM mixer were about 20% less than that of Sulzer mixer whereas the mixing performance of SSM mixer was not so good as that of Sulzer mixer

In this work the mixing and flow characteristics of a vane-type static mixer were investigated numerically for the reduction of NOx in the SCR-system of the diesel engines. The mixer was located in the 57 times pipe diameter away from the inlet. The analysis were performed by changing such various parameters as vane shape, angles, blockage ratio and location of the vane. The flow structure through the mixer was characterized by uniformity index and pressure drop. The results show that uniformity index and pressure coefficient are substantially influenced by the vane shape, angle, blockage ratio and position of the vane of the mixer.

It is very important to estimate static squeezing pressure distributions for lining material of sterntube after bearing at dry dock stage since the maximum squeezing pressure value can be one of the significant characteristics representing coming navigation performances of the propulsion system. Moderate oil film pressure between lining material and propulsion shaft is also essential for safe ship service. In this paper, Hertz contact theory is explained to derive static squeezing pressure. Reynolds equation simplified from Navier-Stokes equation is centrally differentiated to numerically obtain dynamic oil film pressures. New shaft alignment technology of nonlinear elastic multi-support bearing elements is also used in order to obtain external forces acting on lining material of bearing. For 300K DWT class VLCC with synthetic bush of sterntube after bearing, static squeezing pressures are calculated using derived external forces and Hertz contact theory. Optimum partial slope of the after bush is presented by parametric shaft alignment analyses. Dynamic oil film pressures are comparatively evaluated for partially bored and unbored after bush. Finally it is proved that the partial slope can drastically reduce oil film pressure during engine running.

A driver interacts directly with the car seat at all times. There are ergonomic characteristics that have to be followed to produce comfortable seats. However, most of previous researches focused on either static or dynamic condition only. In addition, research on car seat development is critically lacking although Malaysia herself manufactures its own car. Hence, this paper integrates objective measurements and subjective evaluation to predict seat discomfort. The objective measurements consider both static and dynamic conditions. Steven's psychophysics power law has been used in which after expansion; ${\psi}\;=\;a+b{\varphi}_s^{\alpha}+c{\varphi}_v^{\beta}$ where ${\psi}$ is discomfort sensation, ${\varphi}_s^{\alpha}$ is static modality with exponent ${\alpha}$ and ${\varphi}_v^{\beta}$ is dynamic modality with exponent ${\beta}$. The subjects in this study were local and the cars used were Malaysian made compact car. Static objective measurement was the seat pressure distribution measurement. The experiment was carried out on the driver's seat in a real car with the engine turned off. Meanwhile, the dynamic objective measurement was carried out in a moving car on real roads. During pressure distribution and vibration transmissibility experiments, subjects were requested to evaluate their discomfort levels using vehicle seat discomfort survey questionnaire together with body map diagram. From subjective evaluations, seat pressure and vibration dose values exponent for static modality ${\alpha}$ = 1.51 and exponent for dynamic modality ${\beta}$ = 1.24 were produced. The curves produced from the $E_{q.s}$ showed better $R_{-sq}$ values (99%) when both static and dynamic modalities were considered together as compared to Eq. with single modality only (static or dynamic only R-Sq = 95%). In conclusion, car seat discomfort prediction gives better result when seat development considered both static and dynamic modalities; and using ergonomic approach.

Machining accuracy of machine tools spindles using the hydrostatic bearing, largely depends on the static stiffness and the thermal deformation of the spindle unit. In this paper, the modelling and static, thermal analysis of the hydrostatic spindles were performed for the relationship between the design variables like the bearing span, overhang, bearing stiffness and static stiffness at spindle. The goal of optimization is the mazimum, static stiffness at spindle nose with lower temperature rise in hydrostatic bearing. Temperature rise of hydrostatic bearing is minimized with the variables of spindle diameter and oil supply pressure. Finally, validity of the proposed algorithm is verified by improving the static, thermal performance of the existing hydrostatic spindles.

Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of IASTM and static stretching techniques on ankle joint range of motion (ROM), static foot pressure. Methods: Twenty four subjects with gastrocnemius shortness participated in this study. The subjects were assigned randomly to one of two groups: The soft tissue mobilization technique (IASTM) group received intervention using a IASTM instrument for two minutes, and the stactic stretching group performed self stretching for 30 seconds, four times. The ROM of the ankle joint was measured by active ankle dorsi-flexion test, and a TPScan was utilized to collect the plantar foot pressure. This experiment was performed by two physical therapists. The significant level was set at ${\alpha}=.05$. Results: The results were as follows: 1) The ROM of the ankle joint and was significantly increased in both groups. 2) Plantar foot pressure was no significant in both groups. 3) There were no significant differences between the IASTM group and static stretching group for any variable. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that static stretching is an effective and easy technique for restoring proper muscle length in subjects with gastrocnemius shortness. We recommend that static stretching technique be used for treat gastrocnemius shortness in clinical setting and home program.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the effect of maitland mobilization and mobilization with movement (MWM) applied to the ankle joint on ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (ROM), static and dynamic balance, plantar pressure, and gait ability. Methods: A total of 24 individuals were assigned to either the maitland mobilization group (n=12) or the MWM group (n=12). Dorsiflexion ROM, static and dynamic balance, plantar pressure, 10-meter walk test were measured before and 4 weeks after the intervention. Results: Both groups showed a significant difference in the evaluation after 4 weeks as the dorsiflexion ROM of the ankle increased (p<.05), and the sway length and sway area indicating static balance decreased (p<.05). Furthermore, the movement area showing dynamic balance showed a significant increase (p<.05), the plantar pressure difference between both feet significantly decreased (p<.05). In the 10-meter walk test, there was a significant difference as the time decreased (p<.05). However, no significant difference between the two groups was observed (p>.05). Conclusion: According to the results of this study where, maitland mobilization and MWM were applied to the ankle joint of hemiplegic patients for 4 weeks, we found no difference between the two groups. However, each technique was found to be effective for dorsiflexion ROM, static and dynamic balance, plantar pressure, and gait.
