  • Since early in the 90's, as the need for construction of underground rock structures has been largely increased, the in-situ rock stress measurement has been widely carried out to provide the quantitative information on the initial stress state of test site at the design stage of underground rock structures. Among the diverse method developed for measuring rock stress, hydraulic fracturing method is most popularly used because it is applicable at pre-construction stage and has no limit in testing depth. In this paper a study on initial rock stress state at shallow depth of the plain gneiss region in the central part of Seoul was performed on the basis of the in-situ hydraulic fracturing stress measurement results from the 11 test boreholes. And overall characteristics of the initial stress field of the study area are discussed.

  • In this study, flexural strength properties of concrete under biaxial stress state were experimentally investigated. Tests for size effect and fatigue behaviour of concrete under biaxial stress were carried out by the ASTM C 1550 and the biaxial flexure test(BFT). The results given by the biaxial tests were compared to those by the third-point bending test. Test results showed that biaxial flexural strengths obtained from the ASTM C 1550 and the biaxial flexure test are greater than the strength by the third-point bending test. As the size increases, the uniaxial and biaxial flexural strength decreases. However, the slope of the size effect of the biaxial strength was greater than that of the uniaxial strength. Finally, the fatigue response of concrete under the biaxial stress state was similar with that for uniaxial stress state.

  • Member force, strain and stress distribution of a section are obtained for optimized standard 25m~45m PSSC composite bridge subjected to dead and live load in order to interpret the effect of prestressing and deformation of tendon. The stress and strain distribution and moment capacity are obtained for both noncomposite and composite section and for allowable stress limit state, yield limit state and strength limit state. Reliability analysis is conducted after assuming limit states for stress and flexural strength. The reliability index for standard PSSC composite bridge which is designed to satisfy the allowable stress for flexural strength are higher than 3.5 which is required reliability indexes on American code for LRFD. Reliability of PSSC girder which is designed based on allowable stress of bridge design code is high for flexural strength.

  • In order to investigate the effect of different perforation angles (the angle between the perforation direction and the maximum horizontal principal stress) on the fracture initiation and propagation during hydraulic fracturing of highly deviated well in oil & gas saturated formation, laboratory experiments of the hydraulic fracturing had been carried out on the basis of non-dimensional similar criteria by using 400^3 $mm^3$ cement cubes. A plane fracture can be produced when the perforations are placed in the direction of the maximum horizontal principal stress. When the perforation angle is $45^{\circ}$, the fractures firstly initiate from the perforations at the upper side of the wellbore, and then turn to the maximum horizontal principal stress direction. When the well deviation angle and perforation angle are both between $45^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$, the fractures hardly initiate from the perforations at the lower side of the wellbore. Well azimuth (the angle between the wellbore axis and the maximum horizontal principal stress) has a little influence on the fracture geometries; however it mainly increases the fracture roughness, fracture continuity and the number of secondary fractures, and also increases the fracture initiation and propagation pressure. Oriented perforating technology should be applied in highly deviated well to obtain a single plane fracture. If the well deviation angle is smaller, the fractures may link up.

  • In marine clay deposits, naturally formed or artificially reclaimed, the evaluation and monitoring of the consolidation process has been a critical issue in civil engineering practices due to the time frame required for completing the consolidation process, which range from several days to several years. While complementing the conventional iconographic method suggested by Casagrande and recently developed in-situ techniques that measure the shear wave, this study suggests an alternative experimental procedure that can be used to evaluate the consolidation state of marine clay deposits using the shear wave velocity. A laboratory consolidation testing apparatus was implemented with bimorph-type piezoelectric bender elements to determine the effective stress-shear wave velocity (${\sigma}^{\prime}-V_s$) relationship with the marine clays of interest. The in-situ consolidation state was then evaluated by comparing the in-situ shear wave velocity data with the effective stress-shear wave velocity relationships obtained from laboratory experiments. The suggested methodology was applied and verified at three different sites in South Korea, i.e., a foreshore site in Incheon, a submarine deposit in Busan, and an estuary delta deposit in Busan. It is found that the shear wave-based experimental procedure presented in this paper can be effectively and reliably used to evaluate the consolidation state of marine clay deposits.

  • This study has been conducted on the nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design in quasi experimental basis and newly born premature infants from intensive care unit of G Medical University Hospital in Inchon Metropolitan were selected in two groups of 21 infants each. The first group for experimental and the other for control. Data has been collected form October 30, 1997 to August 29, 1998. For the experimental group tactile and kinesthetic stimulation was applied 2 times a day for 10 days(10 : 00~11 : 00 hours in the morning and 17 : 00~18 : 00 in the afternoon). As a weight weighing instrument. electronic indicator scale(Cas Co. korea) was used. To determine urine cortisol concentration level in stress hormone, radio immune assay method was used. And high performance liquid chlomatography was used to determine urine norepinephrine, concentration level To determine behavior status, tools developed by Anderson et at(1990) and remodeled by Kim Hee-Sook(1996) were used. Collected data were analyzed with the SAS program using x$^2$-test, student t-test, repeated measures ANOVA and paired t -test. The result were as follow. 1. As for the daily weight gain. the experimental group showed first change in weight and this group also showed higher weight in the average weight than the control group. Statistically, however, there was no significant factor between the two group. 2. The cortisol concentration in urine showed decrease in the experimental group norepinephrine concentration in urine showed increase in both experimental and control groups. No statistical significance was shown between the two groups. 3. In the aspect of behavior status. the experimental group showed statistical significance by showing inactive in the state of alert and conversion to a positive state than the control group. In conclusion, the sensory stimulation in this study showed a positive aspect through there was no statistical significance in the weight gain and urine stress hormone concentration. In the behavior status, there was statistical significance in the frequency of staying inactive in the state of alert and conversion to a positive state.

  • A new model for describing the behavior of clay under monotonic and cyclic loading is proposed. This model uses the hyperbolic representation for the stress -strain relationship in overconsolidated state and it describes undrained effective stress path on the basis of the critical state theory. The developed constitutive model by using an energy dissipation equation can describe the behavior of clay in heavily overconsolidated state as u.ell as lightly overconsolidated state under monotonic loading. In order to extend the model for the behavior of clay under cyclic loading, a shift function of undrained stress spacing ratio is introduced in the constitutive model developed for monotonlc loading. A single additional parameter is required to represent the cyclic effect and it can be reasonably deter mined from the test results. The measured behavior in undrained cyclic triaxial tests has been easily and precisely predicted by the newly developed constitutive model.

  • This paper proposes a revised Modified Cam Clay type failure surface based on the critical state theory. In the plane of the mean effective and von Mises stresses, the original Modified Cam Clay model has an elliptic failure surface which leads the critical-state mean effective stress to be always half of the pre-consolidation mean effective stress without hardening and evolution rules. This feature does not agree with the real mechanical response of clay. In this study, the preconsolidation mean effective stress only reflects the consolidation history of the clay whereas the critical state mean effective stress only relies on the currenct void ratio of clay. Therefore, the proposed failure surface has a distorted elliptic shape without any fixed ratio between the preconsolidation and critical state mean effective stresses. Numerical simulations for various clays using failure surfaces as yield surface provide mechanical responses similar to the experimental data.

  • The present paper is dealing with the investigation of the stress field around the infinitely long cylindrical cavity, of a circular cross section, contained in the transversally isotropic elastic continuum. Investigation is based upon the determination of the stress function that satisfies the biharmonic equation, for the given boundary conditions and for rotationaly symmetric loading. The solution of the partial differential equation of the problem is given in the form of infinite series of Bessel's functions. Determination of the stress-strain field around cavities is a common requirement for estimation of safety of underground rock excavations.

  • In the present contribution an interface crack model is introduced which is capable of modelling crack initialisation and growth in aluminium as well as in Fibre Metal Laminates. Interface elements are inserted in a finite element mesh with a yield function which bounds all states of stress in the interface. Hardening occurs after a state of stress exceeds the yield stress of the material. The hardening branch is bounded by the ultimate stress of the material. Thereafter, the state of stress is reduced to zero while the inelastic deformations grow. The energy dissipated by the inelastic deformations in this process equals the fracture energy of the material. The model is applied to calculate the onset and growth of cracking in centre cracked plates made of aluminium and GLARE$^{(R)}$. The impact of the model parameters on the performance of the crack model is studied by comparisons of the numerical results with experimental data.
