높이 20미터 미만인 구조물의 낙뢰리스크 평가 (Lightning Risk Assessment for Structures Lower than 20m High)

  • Korean Industrial Standards for lightning protection system complies with IEC standards. However, the standards are applicable only to buildings and structures more than 20 meters in high. Therefore, it is necessary to determine whether lightning protection system should be installed on structures lower than 20 meters high. This paper proposes an efficient method of assessing risk against lightning of structures lower than 20 meters high. The method suggests simplified lightning protection system and provides selecting an appropriate protection level. The suggested method assumes that structure under assessment has no lightning protection system and there is no person around the structure at the moment of lightning stroke. A simplified method of assessing the risk to human within the structure is developed by adopting the general assessment factor. The selection of a protection level is possible by comparing tolerable risk with physical damage risk caused by a direct lightning. Finally, this paper gives ways to establish surge protection measures when a structure with lightning risk is within a radius of 2km from the assessed structure even if this structure requires no lightning protection system.

  • The conception of early streamers is in sufficient and inadequate as a parameter for the determination of any advantage of early streamer emission(ESE) lightning rods versus ordinary lightning rods. Thus, standards for many other national and international lightning protection as well as KS C IEC 61024-1 do not take ESE lightning rods, charge dissipation systems or non-conventional lightning rods. Unfortunately, many non-conventional lightning rods such as ESE lightning rods and charge dissipation systems in Korea are increasingly used in lightning protection of structures including explosive manufacturing buildings, electric generating, transmission and distribution systems. This study attempts to make aware of no advantage of ESE rods and other non-conventional lightning protection systems and to investigate the present status of installations of ESE lightning rods.

  • Latest development of ICT makes building, including houses, factories and public facilities, more intelligent and automatized. It follows that a wide variety of electric and ICT installations are adopted along with micro electronic equipments. Corresponding to such changes, the frequency of lightning increases due to the abnormal climate. The major damage by lightning surge is disconnection and malfunction of facilities. It is necessary, therefore, to make a regulation of inspection and maintenance for lightning protection facilities. This paper deals with main issues of a regulation draft of inspection and maintenance for lightning protection facilities based on IEC 62305

피뢰시스템 구성부품 중 금속접속재의 성능시험 및 결과분석 (An Analysis of Performance Testing for Metallic Connection Components of Lightning Protection System)

  • Recently, IEC published new standards about the requirements and tests for lightning protection system(LPS) components. If components are used for LPS, they should comply with the IEC standards. This paper, we collected six specimens for the metallic connection components using in domestic, and it tested for withstand lightning current which according to the IEC 62561-1. As a result, only one specimen meet this performance requirement. The specimen is the metallic connection component with four bolts fixed. Therefor, when designing of LPS in domestic, the metallic connection components shall be taken into account for the selection of the withstand lightning current. In addition, we need to develop for LPS components product and the national standards.

  • As it has been reported that more than 60% of transmission line faults occurs due to lightning strokes, lighting is one of concerned issues in electric power utility company. Most of transmission line is double circuit in Korea. Double circuit outages account for 33.7 percent of total lightning faults from 1996 to 2004. Even though transmission fault might be cleared shortly by protective system, it could deteriorate the power quality accompanied with sag or flicker. Moreover, double circuit fault may lead to more aggravated situation, for instance, blackout. To Protect transmission lines from lightning stroke, reduction of tower footing resistance, multiple ground wires and unbalanced insulation in double circuit lines have been adopted. In this paper, we would like to introduce insulation design standards for lightning protection of Korea Electric Power Corporation.

  • This investigation presents reviews of many research results on lightning damage to wind turbines and lightning protection strategies from IEC Standard, Europe, USA, Japan and Korea. There have been few studies on lightning protection of wind turbines in Korea, while various investigations have been performed in the other countries. It is necessary to apply some good lightning protection strategies of IEC Standard and the other countries to Korea. Those are as follows: The guideline for lightning protection of wind turbines should be established based on IEC Standards. It needs to be carried out both development of software and experimental studies for understanding the types of lightning damage to wind turbines and compiling the database. In order to minimize the lightning damage to wind turbines, it is a key factor for wind farm owners and researchers to provide the information about the damage cases and wind farm operation technique.

  • Recently KS documents related to lightning protection were revised complying with the requirements of IEC standards. Lightning protection parts are divided three in IEC, those are arrestor(60099), SPD(61643), and protection facilities(62305). According as international standard is applicable in Korea, type tests, routine tests, and acceptance tests shall be made to demonstrate compliance with the relevant standards. KESRI have installed test equipment which is funded by Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy fit for lightning surge test form 2002, and we introduce the test equipments in detail.

  • IEC Standards on lightning protection system specify the use of natural components as down conductors. This paper provides an analysis of problems revealed from our field investigation and survey conducted for the relevant experts in the construction site where natural components are used as down conductors. It also considers a suitable condition for installing natural components as down conductors in accordance with the latest version of the standard. As a result, when rebars of reinforced concrete are used as down conductors, vertical bars consisting of rebars of which thickness is not less than D13($127mm^2$) should be connected by welding, clamps or bound joints, using appropriate connection components conforming to IEC Standards. The lashed joints, however, shall not be applied for down conductors.

비행체 시스템과 구조물의 낙뢰 보호 적합성 입증방법에 관한 고찰 (A Study on Means of Compliance for Lightning Protection in the System and Structure of Air Vehicles)

  • 항공사에서 운용되는 수송급 항공기는 평균적으로 연 1회(또는 1,000~20,000 비행시간 당 1회) 낙뢰에 피격되는 것으로 추정된다. 그러나 피격 확률이 중요한 것이 아니라 항공기가 낙뢰에 피격된다는 사실이 중요하다. 그러므로 인증 과정에서 항공기의 낙뢰보호설계가 검증되고 낙뢰 관련 감항기준에 대한 적합성이 입증되어야 한다. 본 논문에서는 우선적으로 우리나라 최초로 민간 형식증명을 획득한 KC-100 비행기 및 일부 시험 사례 분석을 통해 낙뢰에 대한 적합성 입증방법을 고찰하였다. 향후 본 논문을 바탕으로 우주발사체에 대한 낙뢰 영향성도 고찰해 볼 필요가 있다.

FDTD Analsysis of Lightning-Induced Voltages on Shielded Telecommunication Cable with Multipoint Grounding

  • In this paper, the lightning-induced voltages on shielded twisted-pair wires with multipoint grounding on cable sheath are calculated by using finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method. The equivalent single-wire line that represents a bundle of twisted-pair wires is adopted for computational efficiency. A finitely conducting ground is also taken into account in both lightning electromagnetic field calculations and surge propagation along the shielded cable for a practical simulation. It is found that multipoint additional grounding on cable sheath provides more shielding effectiveness especially in the early time response of the lightning-induced voltages. From this study, the requirements for lighting surge protection devices in a telecommunication subscriber cab1e can be established.
