This work reports the results for laser shock peening of duplex stainless steel (22% Chromium - 5% Nickel) using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser (wavelength = 532nm, pulse width = 8ns). for the application to high-capacity pumps for seawater desalination plants. By properly selecting the process parameters such as laser intensity of 10GW/$cm^2$, laser pulse density of 75pulse/$mm^2$, and $100{\mu}m$ thick aluminum foil as an absorbent coating layer, the surface hardness of duplex stainless steel could be enhanced by 26%, from 256HV to 323HV with little changes in surface morphology and roughness. The depth of laser shock peened layer was measured to be around 2mm. The large enhancement of surface hardness is considered to have high practical importance in minimizing abrasive and corrosive deterioration of pump parts.
We investigated how hydroxyapatite (HA) coating onto a porous super stainless steel (S.S.S, 22Cr-20Ni-6Mo-0.25N) affects bone ingrowth in a dog transcortical femoral model. Implants were histologically evaluated after 4 and 48 weeks of implantation, and the bone bonding strength at the bone/implant interface was examined by employing the pull-out test. The direct osseous tissue bonding onto the HA-coated S.S.S was observed, but the uncoated stainless steels had thin fibrous tissue layers. The mean interface strength of the HA-coated S.S.S was 1.5 and 2.5 times greater than those of the S.S.S and the 316L SS after one year of implantation, respectively. In preliminary studies, no toxic responce was observed from a cytotoxicity test of the S.S.S, having similar corrosion resistance to titanium. Our results suggest that early osteoconductive nature of HA coating may induce long term osteointegration for a bioinert substrate.

Recently, with the rapid development in the industries such as mechanical plants, automobiles, ships and marine structures, it is enlarged by the use of the SS 41 steel. This mechanical plants and marine structures are exposed m corrosion because of Cl-under marine environments. To protect their accidents, mainly applied anti-corrosion epoxy coating and various protective its structures. In this study, corrosion control characteristics on the epoxy coating were investigated by the galvanic corrosion of impressed voltage tester under marine environments The main results obtained are as follows; 1. Corrosion current density of amine-epoxy coating becomes more increased than that of other epoxy coating and the time area rate of pin hole and pit until 5% becomes most rapid. 2. The potential of SUS 304 stainless steel(cathode) for Al-epoxy coating is nearly zero potential. 3. Corrosion current density of Amine-epoxy by shot blast becomes more decreased than that of not shot blast and cathodic potential becomes more noble. 4. As distance of anode and cathode is more decreased, corrosion current density of epoxy coating is more increased and cathodic potential becomes less noble.
The objective of this study was to evaluate corrosion resistance of additive manufactured 316L stainless steel and alloy 625 powders widely used in corrosion resistance alloys of marine industry in comparison with cast alloys. Directed Energy Deposition (DED) method was used in this work for sample production. DED parameter adjustment was also studied for optimum manufacturing and for minimizing the influence of defects on corrosion property. Additive manufactured alloys showed lower corrosion resistance in seawater compared to cast alloys. The reason for the degradation of anti-corrosion property was speculated to be due to loss of microstructural integrity intrinsic to the additive manufacturing process. Application of heat treatment with various conditions after DED was attempted. The effect of heat treatments was analyzed with a microstructure study. It was found that 316L and alloy 625 produced by the DED process could recover their expected corrosion resistance when heat treated at 1200 ℃.

To improve the chemical stability of metal, the ceramic coatings on metallic materials have attracted interest from many researchers due to the chemical inertness of ceramic materials. To endure strong acids, SiOC coating on metal substrate was carried out by dip coating method using 20wt% polyphenylcarbosilane solution; SiC powder was added to the solution at 10wt% and 15wt% to improve the mechanical properties and to prevent cracks of the film. Thermal oxidation as a curing step was carried out at $200^{\circ}C$ for crosslinking of the polyphenylcarbosilane, and the coating samples were pyrolysized at $800^{\circ}C$ under argon to convert the polyphenylcarbosilane to SiOC film. The thicknesses of the SiOC coating films were $2.36{\mu}m$ and $3.16{\mu}m$. The quantities of each element were measured as $SiO_{1.07}C_{6.33}$ by EPMA, and it can be confirmed that the SiOC film from polyphenylcarbosilane was formed in a manner that was carbon rich. The hardness of the SiOC film was found to be 3.2Gpa through nanoindentor measurement. No defect including cracks appeared in the SiOC film. The weight loss of the SiOC coated stainless steel was within 2% after soaking in 10% HCl solution at $80^{\circ}C$ for one week. From these results, SiOC coating shows good potential for application to protect against severe chemical corrosion of stainless steel.

Recently, as the interest in improving energy efficiency has grown, the demand for vehicle and machine parts that are resistant in high temperature corrosive conditions and abrasive environments has increased. Pack chromizing treatment of sintered steels is a profitable method that satisfies both corrosion resistance and low friction properties. Since austenitic stainless steels have good corrosion resistance but low mechanical hardness, if they are replaced by sintered steel parts with pack chromizing treatment, all the desirable properties such as low price, easy molding, high hardness, low frictional coefficient, and high corrosion resistance, can be obtained. The higher corrosion resistance of the chromized parts over that of the austenitic stainless steels was acquired by coating chromium carbides and a thin chromium oxides layer on the surface. Moreover, the surface morphology of chromized parts, which were composed of chromium rich phases and hardened chromium carbides by diffusing and alloying, had a peak-and-valley shape so that the dimple effect by the wrinkled morphology and high hardness induced a low friction coefficient.
Corrosion behaviour of water intake gate steel structures with different protective measures was investigated. Five material alternatives were taken for investigation, including: imported and recycled stainless steel, carbon steel with hot zinc spraying, painting and composite coatings. Results of corrosion rate for carbon steel, SUS 304, hot zinc spray coats in three water systems of Mekong river basin (saline, blackish and fresh) were also presented. Corrosion rate of carbon steel decreased with decreasing salinity in the investigated water environments. Meanwhile, these values for zinc coated steel, behaved by another way. Environmental data for these systems were filed and discussed in relation with corrosion characteristics. Method of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was applied in materials selection for water intake gate construction. From point of Life Cycle Cost (LCA) the following ranking was obtained: Zinc sprayed steel < Recycled stainless steel < Composite coated steel < Painting steel < SUS 304 From investigated results, hot zinc spray coating has been applied as protective measure for steel structures of water intake systems in Mekong river basin.

In this work, we examine pure water and water with nanoparticles to investigate water lubrication characteristics and the effect of nanoparticles as lubricant additives for different substrates. We test carbon-based coatings and metals such as high-speed steel and stainless steel in pure deionized (DI) water and DI water with nanoparticles. We investigate water lubrication characteristics and the effect of nanoparticles based on the friction coefficient and wear rate for different substrates. The investigation reveals that nanoparticles enhance the friction and wear properties of high-speed steel and stainless steel. The friction coefficient and wear rate of both high-speed steel and stainless steel decreases in DI water with nanoparticles compared with the results in pure DI water. The presence of nanoparticles in water show good lubricating effect at the contact area for both high-speed steel and stainless steel. However, for carbon-based coatings, nanoparticles do not improve friction and wear properties. Rather, the friction coefficient and wear rate increases with an increase in the concentration of nanoparticles in case of water lubrication. Because carbon-based coatings already have good tribological properties in a water environment, nanoparticles in water do not contribute toward improving the friction and wear properties of carbon-based coatings.
Diamond reinforced Cr-based coating has been proposed as wear-resistant materials. In this study, the friction and wear characteristics of diamond reinforced Cr-based coating are experimentally assessed. The experiments are performed using a pin-on-reciprocating plate tribo-tester under various normal forces with boundary lubrication. The stainless-steel ball is used as a counter material. Prior to the experiments, mechanical properties such as elastic modulus and hardness are determined using nanoscale instrumented indentation. The hardness of the specimen is further determined using a Vickers hardness tester. The specimens before and after the experiments are carefully observed using a confocal microscope to understand the wear characteristics. In addition, the wear volume and wear rate of the specimens are determined based on the confocal microscope data. The results show that the friction coefficients are 0.096-0.100 under 20-40 N normal forces. Furthermore, the wear rates of the diamond reinforced Cr-based coating and the stainless steel ball under 20-40 N normal forces are found to be 12.8 × 10-8 mm3/(Nm)-15.5 × 10-8 mm3/(Nm) and 1.9 × 10-8 mm3/(Nm)-3.9 × 10-8 mm3/(Nm), respectively. However, the effect of the normal force on wear rates is not clearly observed, which may be associated with the flattening of the ball. The results of the study may be useful for the tribological applicability of diamond reinforced Cr-based coating as wear-resistant materials.
The stainless steel mesh coated with poly(acrylic acid) hydrogel was fabricated and applied for the separation of water and oil. The stainless steel mesh was immersed in aqueous poly (acrylic acid) solution, and then irradiated by radiation to introduce poly(acrylic acid) hydrogel on the surface of mesh by crosslinking. It was possible to separate oil and water from mixtures of oil/water effectively using the hydrogel-coated mesh. The effect of irradiation dose, coating thickness, size of mesh on the separation efficiency was examined.
