  • Rock slope near the road or railroad is affected by the outside temperature and iterative freezing-thawing process during winter and early spring. The purpose of this study is to analyze the stability of rock slope which is iniluenced by deterioration due to the freezing-thawing. Method of analysis is homogenization method which find the strength property of discontinuous rock mass and as a strength failure criterion, Drucker-Prager failure criterion is used, The deterioration property of real rock is obtained by a freezing-thawing labordtory test of tuff and this quantitative property is used as a basic data of stability analysis of rock mass. To evaluate the deterioration depth due to the freezing-thawing in the field rock slope, one dimensional heat conductivity equation is used and as a a result we can find the depth of which is affected by a temperature. After determined the freezing-thawing depth of model slope, the pattern of rock mass strength value of model rock slope which excess the limit of self-load is analyzed.

  • The stability of a multi-terminal direct current (MTDC) system is often influenced by its control strategy. To improve the stability of the MTDC system, the control strategy of the MTDC system must be appropriately adopted. This paper deals with estimating stability of a MTDC system based on the line-commutated converter based high voltage direct current (LCC HVDC) system with an inverter with constant extinction angle (CEA) control or a rectifier with constant ignition angle (CIA) control. In order to evaluate effects of two control strategies on stability, a MTDC system is tested on two conditions: initialization and changing DC power transfer. In order to compare the stability effects of the MTDC system according to each control strategy, a mathematical MTDC model is analyzed in frequency domain and time domain. In addition, Bode stability criterion and transient response are carried out to estimate its stability.

  • The growing concern surrounding rollover incidences and consequences of Sports Utility Vehicles(SUV) have prompted to investigate the sensitivity of critical vehicle parameters on rollover. In this paper, dynamic rollover simulation of Sports Utility Vehicles is carried out using a validated nonlinear vehicle model in Matlab/Simulink. A standard model is considered and critical vehicle parameters like CG height, track width and wheel base are varied within chosen specified limits to study its influence on roll behavior during a Fishhook steering maneuver. A roll stability criterion based on Two Wheel Lift Off(TWLO) phenomenon is adopted for rollover propensity prediction. Further dynamic rollover characteristics of the vehicle are correlated with Static Stability Factor(SSF), Roll Stability Factor(RSF) and Two Wheel Lift Off Velocity(TWLV). These findings will be of immense help to SUV chassis designers to determine safety limits of critical vehicle parameters and minimize rollover incidences.

  • The natural disaster occurrences and the loss of lives caused by the steep-slope failures in Korea were investigated in this study. The investigation includes the frequency rate of the steep-slope failures with respect to the characteristics of precipitation, underlying bedrock, and weathered soils. Analysis on the problems in the existing estimation methods of steep-slope failure was also undertaken, and a new model using unsaturated infinite slope stability was developed for the better slope failure estimation. The slope analyses by the newly developed model were performed considering unsaturated infinite slope, the gradient of slope, and hydro/mechanical properties of soils. Steep-slope failure estimation criterion is proposed based on the analysis results. In addition, the precipitation amount corresponding to warning stages against steep-slope failure is provided as an equation of Intensity-Duration criterion.

  • Fundamental features of the arc stability in DC arc furnace of 720V/100kA/72MW have been investigated. Cassie-Mayr arc model has been employed and applied for the target dc arc furnace. In order to characterize the parameters of Cassie-Mayr arc model and the behavior of unstable arc dynamics, the advanced arc simulations of magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) has been performed. The MHD based arc simulation has been validated in the subcomponent level, for the free burning arc set up in the laboratory. From the results of MHD simulation, dc arc dynamic resistance is proposed to be an effective arc stability function reflecting the instability of dynamic arc behavior. The experimental result confirms the usefulness of proposed dynamic arc resistance as arc stability function. The proposed arc stability function can be regarded as an effective criterion for the overall power conversion system to maintain highly stable arcing operation leading to better productivity and reliability.

  • Based on the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, a gradient-dependent plastic model that considers the strain-softening behavior is presented in this study. Both triaxial shear tests on conventional specimen and precut-specimen, which were obtained from an ancient landslide, are performed to plot the post-peak stress-strain entire-process curves. According to the test results of the soil strength, which reduces from peak to residual strength, the Mohr-Coulomb criterion that considers strain-softening under gradient plastic theory is deduced, where strength reduction depends on the hardening parameter and the Laplacian thereof. The validity of the model is evaluated by the simulation of the results of triaxial shear test, and the computed and measured curves are consistent and independent of the adopted mesh. Finally, a progressive failure of the ancient landslide, which was triggered by slide of the toe, is simulated using this model, and the effects of the strain-softening process on the landslide stability are discussed.

  • The instability of operational channels on cognitive radio networks (CRNs), which is due to the stochastic behavior of primary users (PUs), has increased the complexity of the design of the optimal routing criterion (ORC) in CRNs. The exploitation of available opportunities in CRNs, such as the channel diversity, as well as alternative routes provided by the intermediate nodes belonging to routes (internal backup routes) in the route-cost (or weight) determination, complicate the ORC design. In this paper, to cover the channel diversity, the CRN is modeled as a multigraph in which the weight of each edge is determined according to the behavior of PU senders and the protection of PU receivers. Then, an ORC for CRNs, which is referred to as the stability probability of communication between the source node and the destination node (SPC_SD), is proposed. SPC_SD, which is based on the obtained model, internal backup routes, and probability theory, calculates the precise probability of communication stability between the source and destination. The performance evaluation is conducted using simulations, and the results show that the end-to-end performance improved significantly.

  • In this paper, the design technique of fuzzy controller using pole placement method and the stability analysis of the system are discussed. The consequent parts of the fuzzy model representing the fuzzy control system are descrived by linear stated equations. It cannot be guaranteed that the total fuzzy system is stable even if all subsystems are stable. The range of the consequent parameters of fuzzy feedback controller which is stable for each fuzzy subspace of the input space are derived, using a rather simplified stability criterion. Then, the consequent parameters of fuzzy controller is determined with the sufficient condition that the fuzzy feedback controller maintain robust stability for the model of other subspace.

  • Density and temeprature fronts are common features of the ocean. However, frontal dynamics are not quasi-geostrophic because the isopycnal deflections associated with fronts are large compared with the scale height of the hydrostatic geopotential. The frontal geostrophic model, developed by Cushman-Roisin et al.(1992) is generally used fro describing the dynamics of surface-density ocean fronts, whereas the two-layer frontal geostrophic model is used for fronts on a sloping continental shelf. This paper investigates the baroclinic nonlinear stability of surface-density ocean fronts and fronts on a sloping continental shelf using the two-layer frontal geostrophic model mentioned above. Nonlinear stability criteria for the two kinds of fronts are obtained using Arnol'd's (1965; 1969) variational principle and a prior estimate method. This is the first time a nonlinear stability criterion for surface ocean fronts has been established, furthermore, the results obtained for fronts on a sloping bottom are superior to any previous ones.

  • An energy function is derived on the basis of the EMM(Equivalent Mechanical Model) to take account of the effects of tap changer, and then the VC(Voltage Collapse) criteria is proposed to predict the voltage collapse in Power systems. The VC criterion can be evaluated by using the energy margin given by the energy gap between UEP(Unstable Equilibrium Point) and SEP(Stable Equilibrium Point) of the energy function adopted, in which it is noted that the energy contour should be considered due to energy discontinuity associated with tap changing. This paper shows that the proposed VC criterion improves the accuracy of voltage stability analysis with application to a two-bus sample system.
