  • In reactor operation, it is widely known that the absolute stability may not exist for multiple feedback paths even though the single lumped negative temperature coefficient feedback case is clearly stable at all frequencies above those creating xenon poisoning effects. However, interesting and useful stability information may be obtained from a two-path temperature coefficient feedback which can be represented in a water-cooled, water-moderated hetergeneous reactor. In this paper, the outline of an operating stability of a reactor having two-path temperature coefficient feedback is analyzed and described neglecting poison effects.

  • In this study, a physical experiment was performed to investigate the change in the stability coefficient, defined by Hudson equation, for the tetrapod of different specific densities. The experiment was carried out once (with no repetition) for a rubble mound breakwater with 1:1.5 slope. In this experiment, the stability coefficient for the high-density tetrapod was greater than that for the normal-density tetrapod. This indicates variability of the stability coefficient according to change in the density of tetrapod. Further experiments and detailed analysis are required to investigate the effect of the density on the stability coefficient of tetrapod.

  • The shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) by AC power source was performed to evaluate the arc stability by arc monitoring and analysing. In this study, the arc stability index was evaluated quantitatively by using he coefficient of resistance variation for welding time. This coefficient was obtained for the long time (20sec.) by analysing the waveforms of welding current, voltage and resistance. The coefficient was applied to indicate numerically the variation level of arc length and the degree of arc extinction. Using the coefficient of resistance variation in practical welding, the arc stability of the high titanium oxide electrode (KS E4313) turned out to be better than that of the low hydrogen electrode (KS E4316). In evaluating the skill level of welders by the coefficient, the horizontal fillet weaving welding became clear to be very discriminating because the higher level welder could weave in keeping constant arc length, but the lower level welder showed the characteristics of weaving with the unstable arc length. And it was confirmed that the welding defects as blow holes was formed when the arc stability index were high.

  • We investigate the Hurwitz stability condition using the coefficient diagram. The coefficient diagram consists of a plot of logarithmic values of the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial versus the degree of the coresponding coefficients. The logarithmic value of the coefficient of the characteristic polynomials are plotted in the descending order. Using the Bhattacharyya, Chapellat and Keel's algorithm, the sufficient and necessary condition for Hurwitz stability are reconstructed using the coefficient diagram. With the coefficient diagram we also present some necessary or sufficient conditions for Hurwitz stability of polynomials. In addition we obtain a lower bound for the Manabe parameter $\tau$.

  • A sensitivity analysis about effects of influencing factors on the stability of Soil cut slope was performed. Slope stability analyses were carried out under dry, rainy and seismic conditions. Dominant factors controlling the slope stability were chosen such as cohesion and internal friction angle, unit weight of soil, water table and seismic horizontal coefficient used for the slope stability during earthquake. Parametric stability analysis with those factors was performed for sensitivity analysis. As results of analyzing the sensitivity of factors under dry and rainy conditions, effects of cohesion, internal friction angle and unit weight of soil on the stability of slope are more critical in the dry condition than in the rainy condition. Cohesion and internal friction angle are more dominant factors influencing the slope stability irrespective of dry or rainy conditions than unit weight of soil and the horizontal seismic coefficient. The unit weight and the horizontal seismic coefficient affects crucially the stability according to conditions of slope formation and dry or rainy seasons. For the effect of horizontal seismic coefficient on stability of slope, safety factor of slope is not affected significantly by dry or rainy conditions. However, increase of the horizontal seismic coefficient under the rainy condition floes reduce the safety factor significantly rather than the dry condition. Therefore, it is needed that the location of the water table is assigned appropriately to satisfy the required safety factor of stability in the case of checking slope stability for the rainy and seismic conditions.

  • The elimination of chatter vibration is necessary to improve the precision and the productivity of the cutting operation. A new mathematical model of chatter vibration is presented in order to predict the dynamic cutting force from the static cutting data. The dynamic cutting force is analytically expressed by the static cutting coefficient and the dynamic cutting coefficient which can be determined from the cutting mechanics. The stability analysis is carried out by a two degree of freedom system. The chatter experiments are conducted by exciting the cutting tool with an impact hammer during an orthogonal cutting. A good agreement is shown between the stability limits predicted by theory and the critical width of cut determined by experiments.

  • A mathematical model is developed for determination of the dynamic cutting force from static cutting data. The dynamic cutting force is analytically expressed by the static cutting coefficient and the dynamic cutting coefficient which can be determined from the cutting mechanics. The proposed model is verified by the chatter stability charts. A good agreement was shown between the stability limits predicted by the theory and the critical width of cut determined by experiments. The static cutting coefficient dominates high speed chatter stability, while the dynamic cutting coefficient dominates low speed chatter stability.

  • Yield seismic coefficient plays an important role in the estimation of permanent displacement of a soil slope subjected to earthquake using Newmark's sliding block theory. However, yield seismic coefficients currently used in practices are not mechanically rigorous since most of them are estimated using limit equilibrium methods considering equilibrium condition only. Therefore, estimation of permanent displacement of a soil slope based on existing yield seismic coefficient may cause problems. Limit analysis estimating the range of mechanically rigorous solution is thought to be effective in evaluating the validity of existing yield seismic coefficient. In this study, a simple stability chart for yield seismic coefficient useful in practices is proposed by considering various slope conditions including stability number, slope inclination, strength parameters, etc.

  • In this paper, the stability of cracked cantilever T-beams subjected to subtangential follower force is investigated. Also, the effect of subtangential coefficient and crack on the natural frequency of T-beams is presented. Based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the equation of motion is derived by the energy expressions using extended Hamilton's Principle. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations. The values of critical follower force and the stability maps of cantilever T-beams are obtained according to the subtangential coefficient and crack severity. The results of this study will contribute to the safety testing and the stability estimation of cracked T-beams subjected to follower force.

  • In Korea, there are many regulations and cases for horizontal seismic coefficient to pseudo-static analysis of slope, but there are insufficient regulations and cases for vertical seismic coefficient. Therefore, geological investigation and laboratory tests were conducted to analyze the effect of the vertical seismic coefficient on slope stability, and pseudo-static analyses based on infinite slope stability analysis were performed by using those results. As a result, if the earthquake magnitude is less than M 5.0, the effect of the vertical seismic coefficient is not significant, and if the earthquake magnitude is more than M 6.0, the vertical seismic coefficient largely increases the unstable areas of Fs ≤ 1.1. These tendency is more distinct in rainfall condition than without rainfall condition.
