It has been reported by the existing papers that the ultimate load capacity and energy absorption capacity of the CFST column are considerably higher than those resulting from a simple addition of the capacities of the concrete and the steel tube. It is normally believed that the confined effect for the infilled concrete due to the hoop tension of steel at the parameter of cross sections can remarkably improve the ductility and energy absorption capacities of the CFST columns. This paper provides the results of a study on the load-carrying capacities and energy absorption capacities of the CFST columns, a numerical analysis method, i. e. N-M interaction curves and Moment curvature relationships. The numerical approaches are verified by comparing with the existing test results and the circular and square steel tube sections are selected to clarify the amount of confinement effects to improve the ultimate deformable capacity(a ultimate strain value) of the infilled concrete. Then, an adequate value of the ultimate strain of the infilled concrete and an equation of the ultimate capacity of the CFST column are suggested.
The present paper deals with the application of the explicit finite element code, PAM-CRASH, to simulate the crash behavior of steel thin-walled tubes with various cross-sections subjected to axial loading. An isotropic elastic, linear strain-hardening material model was used in the finite element analysis and the strain-rate sensitivity of mild steel was modeled by using the Cowper-Symonds constitutive equation with modified coefficients. The modified coefficients were applied in numerical collapse simulations of 11 types of thin-walled polygon tubes: 7 convex polygon tubes and 4 concave polygon tubes. The results show that the thin hexagonal tube and the thick octagonal tube showed relatively good performance within the convex polygon tubes. The crush strengths of the hexagonal and octagonal tubes increased by about 20% and 25% from the crush strength of the square tube, respectively. Among the concave tubes, the I-type tube showed the best performance. Its crush strength was about 50% higher than the crush strength of the square tube.
The need for carbon neutrality in the world strives the construction industry to reduce the use of construction materials. Aiming to this, recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) could be used as it reduces the carbon dioxide emissions. Currently, RAC is mainly used in non-structural members of civil constructions, seldom used in structural members. To broaden its structural use, a new type of composite column, i.e., the square and rectangular RAC filled FRP tubes (CFFTs), has been concerned in this study. The investigation on their axial compressive behavior through physical test and numerical analysis demonstrated that the load-carrying capacity of such column is reduced with the increase of replacement ratio of recycled aggregate and aspect ratio of section but can be improved by the increase of FRP confining stiffness and corner radius, said capacity can be equivalent to their steel reinforced concrete counterparts. At failure, the hoop strain at corner of tube is unexpectedly smaller than that at flat side of the tube although the FRP tube ruptured at its corner first, revealing a premature failure. Besides, a design-oriented stress-strain model of concrete and an analysis-oriented finite element model are proposed to predict the load-strain response of square and rectangular CFFT columns, which facilitates the engineering use of RAC in load-carrying structural members.
This study aimed to inspect the axial compression mechanical performance of basalt-fiber-reinforced recycled - concrete (BFRRC)-filled square steel tubular stub column. The replacement ratio of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) and the basalt fiber (BF) dosage were used as variation parameters, and the axial compression performance tests of 15 BFRRC-filled square steel tubular stub column specimens were conducted. The failure mode and the load-displacement/strain curve of the specimen were measured. The working process of the BFRRC-filled square steel tubular stub column was divided into three stages, namely, elastic-elastoplasticity, sudden drawdown, and plasticity. The influence of the design parameters on the peak bearing capacity, energy dissipation performance, and other axial compression performance indexes was discussed. A mathematical model of segmental stiffness degradation was proposed on the basis of the degradation law of combined secant-stiffness under axial compression. The full-process curve equation of axial compressive stress-strain was proposed by introducing the influencing factors, including the RCA replacement ratio and the BF dosage, and the calculated curve agreed well with the test-measured curve.
Spiral spacing effect on axial compressive behavior of reinforced concrete filled steel tube (RCFST) stub column is experimentally investigated in this paper. A total of twenty specimens including sixteen square RCFST columns and four benchmarked conventional square concrete filled steel tube (CFST) columns are fabricated and tested. Test variables include spiral spacing (spiral ratio) and concrete strength. The failure modes, load versus displacement curves, compressive rigidity, axial compressive strength, and ductility of the specimens are obtained and analyzed. Especially, the effect of spiral spacing on axial compressive strength and ductility is investigated and discussed in detail. Test results show that heavily arranged spirals considerably increase the ultimate compressive strength but lightly arranged spirals have no obvious effect on the ultimate strength. In practical design, the effect of spirals on RCFST column strength should be considered only when spirals are heavily arranged. Spiral spacing has a considerable effect on increasing the post-peak ductility of RCFST columns. Decreasing of the spiral spacing considerably increases the post-peak ductility of the RCFSTs. When the concrete strength increases, ultimate strength increases but the ductility decreases, due to the brittleness of the higher strength concrete. Arranging spirals, even with a rather small amount of spirals, is an economical and easy solution for improving the ductility of RCFST columns with high-strength concrete. Ultimate compressive strengths of the columns are calculated according to the codes EC4 (2004), GB 50936 (2014), AIJ (2008), and ACI 318 (2014). The ultimate strength of RCFST stub columns can be most precisely evaluated using standard GB 50936 (2014) considering the effect of spiral confinement on core concrete.
Concrete-filled square steel tube (CFT) columns have inherently high fire resistance and load-bearing capacity. Nevertheless, it is sometimes necessary to improve their fire resistance using external fire protection. This paper presents the experimental results of the temperature distribution of CFT columns with fire protection. A fire load test was carried out by exposing small-scale specimens to heat in an electric furnace that was especially built for testing loaded columns. The temperature distribution of CFT columns under constant axial loads was determined, as were its significant parameters, such as the types of fire protection and thickness, the thickness of the square CFT, and the fire duration times. The results of this study showed the temperature distribution of each specimen of the electric furnace and the temperature distribution properties of concrete and steel. In addition, the axial displacement and local buckling behavior of CFT columns based on temperature changes was observed.
This paper aims to study the seismic performance of external diaphragm connection between SST (square steel tube) column and H-shaped beam through experimental and analytical study involving finite element (FE) method and theoretical analysis. In the experimental study, three external diaphragm connection specimens with weak panel zone were tested under axial pressure on the top of the column and antisymmetric cyclic loads at the beam end to investigate the seismic performance of the panel zone. The hysteretic behavior, failure mode, stiffness and ductility of the specimens were discussed. Key point to be explored was the influence of the thickness of the steel tube flange on the shear capacity of the specimens. In the analytical study, three simplified FE models were developed to simulate the seismic behavior of the specimens for further analysis on the influence of steel tube flange. Finally, four existing calculation formulas for the shear capacity of the external diaphragm connection were evaluated through comparisons with the results of experiments and FE analysis, and application suggestions were put forward.
A composite member made of concrete-filled steel tubes (CFT columns) has been recognized for its fire resistance due to the thermal mass effect of concrete inside the steel tube, as shown in various studies. In this study, the fire resistance performance of reinforced CFT columns under constant axial load was evaluated using finite element analysis with ABAQUS. For this purpose, the variables including cross-section size, steel tube thickness, and concrete cover thickness were set, and the temperature distribution in the column cross-section exposed to a standard fire was investigated using heat transfer analysis. Ultimately, a P-M interaction curve was obtained by evaluating the overall residual strength of columns, and the fire resistance time was determined by evaluating axial displacement-time responses due to the reduction in load capacity during fire through stress analysis.
Recently, high-performance steels have been increasingly used for structural materials in buildings and bridges with the demand for high-rise and long-span of main structures. This paper offers a series of basic study for the design specification of structural members using high performance steel, that is material properties of HSA800 (High-performance rolled steel for building structures). Built-up square tube stub columns with variables of width-to-thickness ratios are planned as a parametric study in order to investigate the local buckling behaviors and check the current design limit of width-to-thickness ratio. In addition, the buckling behaviors of stub columns obtained finite element (FE) analysis were compared with those from experimental tests. The verified FE model was used for parametric study and checked applicability of high-strength steel on current design specification.
Top-down construction is a construction technique in which pit excavation and structure construction are conducted simultaneously. Reducing construction time and minimizing noise and vibration which affect neighboring structures, the technique is widely employed in constructing downtown structures. While H-steel columns have been commonly used as core columns, concrete filled steel tube (CFT) columns are at the center of attention because the latter have less axial directionality and greater cross-sectional efficiency than the former. When compared with circular CFT columns, square CFT columns are more easily connected to the floor structure and the area of percussion rotary drilling (PRD) is smaller. For this reason, square CFT columns are used as core columns of concrete encased and filled square (CET) columns in underground floors. However, studies on the structural behavior and concrete stress transfer of CET columns have not been conducted. Since concrete is cast according to construction sequence, checking the stress of concrete inside the core columns and the stress of covering concrete is essential. This paper presents the results of structural tests and analyses conducted to evaluate the usability and safety of CET columns in top-down construction where CFT columns are used as core columns. Parameters in the tests are loading condition, concrete strength and covering depth. The compressive load capacity and failure behavior of specimens are evaluated. In addition, 2 cases of field application of CET columns in underground floors are analyzed.
