New Mulberry Cultivar, Milsungppong, was selected from F1 seedlings obtained by crossing the female, 4X Keomseolppong, and the male, Kaeryangppong. Local adaptability test has been carried out at five places(Suwon, Chunchun, Cheongju, Kongju and Sangju) for four years since 1992. Leaf quality was tested by silkworm rearing for two silkworm rearing seasons(spring and autumn) at Suwon in 1995. From these tests, Milsungppong was found to be superior to control cultivar, cultivar, Kaeryangppong, in productivity, rootability and shoot cold injury. The new cultivar, Milsungppong, has following agronomic characteristics as compared with Kaeryangppong, the most prevailing cultivar, Milsungppong, has following agronomic characteristics as compared with Kaeryangppong, the most prevailing cultivar in Korea It is triploid cultivar belonging to Morus bombycis KOIDZ with the leaf shape of five lobes, sprouting in spring nearly the same to the Kaeryangppong (Morus alba L.), high leaf yielding of 25% compared to Kaeryangppong (Morus alba L.) and the medium degree of cold resistance. It is adaptable to every where in Korea except the area cold injury broken out habitually. Milsungppong is recommended to rear silkworms not only in spring but also in autumn besides for young silkworms.

Changes of heading response and leaf production of winter cereals according to cultivar and sowing date in spring, were investigated in Suwon Korea during three years from 2007 to 2009 to obtain information on use as spring living mulch of winter cereals for weed suppression without herbicide in environment-friendly crop production. Rye showed variation among cultivar in heading response according to sowing date, which means that cultivar selection for living mulch is important in rye. Cultivar Prima and Wintergreen had not headed in sowing during March with low soil temperature in contrast to cultivar Koolgrazer and Gokwoo which had headed somewhat even until sowing in early May with relative high soil temperature. Barley and wheat showed distinct characteristics in heading response between sowing before and after early April compared to rye. Leaf production for soil covering was higher in barley than wheat, and cultivar Mirak than Ol within barley in 2007, respectively. Leaf production were not different much among rye cultivar in sowing during early or mid April, but it was different in sowing after mid April indicating that winter cereal cultivar with high leaf production could be selected in late sowing. It is thought that rye cultivar Duru was the most proper cultivar for spring living mulch in the point of high leaf production in addition to low heading in sowing after March.
New mulberry cultivar, Shinsungppong which was resistant to main mulberry disease was bred and resistered as a commercial cultivar. Local adaptability test has been carried out at three places (Suwon, Kongju, and Jinju) for four years since 2001. Leaf quality was tested by silkworm rearing for two silkworm rearing seasons (spring and autumn) at Suwon in 2000. Shinsungppong was recognized to be superior by 7% in productivity to control cultivar, Sangilppong. The new cultivar, Shinsungppong, has following agronomic characteristics as compared with Sangilppong, which is known as a resistant cultivar to mulberry disease in Korea. It is belonging to Morus alba L. with mixed shapes from the ovate to 5 lobated leaf shape, sprouting in spring nearly the same to the Sangilppong (Morus alba L.), high leaf yielding by 7% compared to Sangilppong (Morus alba L.). It is adaptable to everywhere except the places where cold damage frequently in Korea. Sangilppong is recommended to rear silkworms not only in spring but also in autumn besides for young silkworms.
New triploid mulberry cultivar, Suilppong was bred among selected lines from F$_1$ seedlings obtained by crossing the female, artificial tetraploid No. 411 which obtained from Chungilppong seedlings, and the male, Kugsang 21. Local adaptability test has been carried out at four places (Suwon, Kongju, Jeonju and Jangsung) for five years since 1997. Leaf quality was tested by silkworm rearing for two silkworm rearing seasons (spring and autumn) at Suwon in 2000. Suilppong was recognized to be superior in productivity to control cultivar, Kaeryangppong. The new cultivar, Suilppong, has following agronomic characteristics as compared with Kaeryangnppong, which is leading cultivar widely cultivating in Korea. It is belonging to Morus alba L. with mixed shapes from the ovate to 5 lobated leaf shape, sprouting in spring nearly the same to the Kaeryangppong (Morus alba L.), high leaf yielding of 20% compared to Kaeryangppong (Morus alba L.). It is adaptable to everywhere except the places where cold damage occurs frequently in Korea. Suilppong is recommended to rear silkworms not only in spring but also in autumn besides for young silkworms.
New mulberry cultivar, Hansungppong, was bred among selected lines from F1 seedlings obtained by crossing the female, Yongcheonppong, and the male, Kugsang 21. Local adaptability test has been carried out at two places (Suwon and Chunchun) for four years since 1995. Leaf quality was tested by silkworm rearing for two silkworm rearing seasons (spring and autumn) at Suwon in 1998. Hansungppong was recognized to be superior in productivity and cold resistance to control cultivar, Yongcheonppong. The new cultivar, Hansungppong, has following agronomic characteristics as compared with Yongcheonppong, which was strongest leading cultivar against cold injury in Korea. It is belonging to Morus alba L. with the ovate leaf shape, sprouting in spring nearly the same to the Yongcheonppong (Morus alba L.), high leaf yielding of 10% compared to Yongcheonppong (Morus alba L.) and the high degree of cold resistance. It is adaptable to everywhere in Korea. Hansungppong is recommended to rear silkworms not only in spring but also in autumn besides for young silkworms.

The experiment reported here was conducted at Suweon and Sunghwan. to evaluate desirable agronomic characteristics, forage yield and quality of nine introduced oat (Avena sativa L.) cultivars in comparison with the control cultivar Cayuse during the fall and spring seasons for three years. Speed oat and G-sprinter showed earlier in maturity than the control cultivar Cayuse, but Taiho, Zenshin and Almighty were recorded as late types. Taiho, Hay oat and Swallow tended to more lodging than the control cultivar under rainy growing conditions and Taiho, Zenshin and Hay oat were more susceptible to barley yellow dwarf virus among the cultivars tested. At Suweon, the early type cultivars Speed oat and G-sprinter significantly outyielded the control cultivar Cayuse over the 3 years of the fall experiment, but no significant forage yield was found between the early type cultivars and the control in the spring experiment except for 1991 At Sunghwan, the early type Speed oat and late types Almighty and Zenshin significantly outyielded the control in the fall experiment of 1991, but the 3 years of experiment showed no significant difference in the forage yield of oat cultivars in the spring experiment. Over the 3 years of the fall and spring experiments at both Suweon and Sunghwan. the crude protein (CP) content and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of the early types Speed oat and G-sprinter were lower than those of the control and late types, but the acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) contents of the early types Speed oat and G-sprinter were slightly higher than those of the control and late types. Results of this experiment indicate that the early type oat cultivars tended to higher forage yield than the late types when sown in the fall, but no cultivar differences in dry matter yield were found when sown in the spring.
Inflorescence, stem, and leaf samples of lettuce grown in a greenhouse in spring and autumn seasons were assayed for sesquiterpene lactones (SLs) content by high performance liquid chromatography. The concentrations of SLs were significantly higher in the inflorescences followed by upper leaf and stem compared to the other plant parts in most of the samples. SLs content (sum of lactucin and lactucopicrin) in various tissues of lettuce cultivated in spring season varied from 5.7 to 22.5 fold ranging from $27.4{\mu}g/g$ dry weight (DW) in the upper stem (cultivar "PI 176588") as the lowest to as high as $2,292.0{\mu}g/g$ DW in the inflorescence (cultivar "709849-1"). During autumn cultivation, the concentration of SLs varied from 2.0 to 14.4 fold ranging from as low of $32.4{\mu}g/g$ DW in the lower stem (cultivar "PI176588") to as high of $838.0{\mu}g/g$ DW in the upper leaf (cultivar "Dambaesangchu"). Higher lactucin (1.2 to 5.6 fold) and lactucopicrin (1.1 to 3.9 fold) concentration was observed during spring compared to autumn cultivation in most of the samples. SLs content in various organs of lettuce increases from the basal plant part going upwards. As lactucin and lactucopicrin are the major SLs which affects the sensory property of lettuce, their quantitative variation in the lettuce cultivars is useful for breeding new varieties with better consumer acceptance.
Starch contents in healthy and powdery mildew-infected spring barley leaves at first and fifth leaf stages were measured at different intervals after inoculation. Different patterns of starch accumulation in the susceptible cultivar Peruvian and the adult plant resistant cultivar Asse were found in infected first and fifth leaves. At the early phase of infection, the amount of starch in infected first leaves was slightly changed in both cultivars. During colony development and sporulation, the decrease in starch content was .more marked in the susceptible Peruvian, whereas the amounts of starch in the adult plant resistant Asse increased during colony development and then decreased sharply before and after sporulation. In heavily infected first leaves, the susceptible cultivar Peruvian showed a drastic decrease in starch content. In the adult plant resistant cultivar Asse, the higher amount of starch retained in these infected leaves, regardless of infection intensity. The regulation of starch accumulation in mildewed barley plants at different leaf stages was discussed in relation to adult plant resistance of spring barley.

This study was aimed to investigate the content of avenanthramides(AVNs) and other phenolic compounds in the grains of a naked oat cultivar, Daeyang, which were seeded in the fall and spring, and examine the effects of alcohol extracts from the grains on natural killer(NK) cell activity in vitro. The content of AVN-A, AVN-B, and AVN-C in the spring-seeded oat grains was 2.2 folds higher than the fall-seeded oat grains on average. Among these AVNs, the content of AVN-C was 1.9-folds higher in the spring-seeded oat grains(66.1㎍/g), comparing to the content in the fall-seeded oat grains(34.8㎍/g). The content of other phenolic compounds, such as phenolic acids and flavonoids in the spring-seeded oat grains was 1.1~4.7-folds higher than the fall-seeded oat grains. In particular, sinapinic acid was the most abundant phenolic acid in the spring-seeded oat grains(50.0㎍/g) and its content was 2.4-folds higher than its content in the fall-seed oat grains. Furthermore, NK cell activity in vitro treated with the spring-seeded oat grain extracts was 158%, and it was 18%p higher than NK cell activity treated with the extracts from the fall-seeded oat grain extracts. Our finding suggest that the bioactive properties of naked oat grains would be enhanced by spring seeding.

In Korea, potatoes have served as a side dish, but their role as snacks, such as chips or French fries, has recently gained traction. While there is a high demand for processing potatoes, there remains a dearth of research on the impact of double cropping, particularly during autumn, on processing quality. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the effects of different spring potato cultivation periods on growth, yield, and processing quality during autumn cultivation. Following spring planting, harvest was carried out four times: 70 days, 80 days, 90 days, and 100 days. Subsequently, autumn cultivation was carried out in Gangneung and Seocheon regions using these seed potatoes. Results showed an increase in above-ground emergence rate with shorter spring growing period. When seed potatoes with a spring cultivation period of 80 and 90 days were grown in the autumn in the Gangneung region, the stem length was 47.2 to 48.9, which was greater than that of other treatments. However, stem number and leaf color (SPAD) showed no significant differences across cultivation periods. The number of tubers, tuber weight, yield, and marketable yield did not vary significantly with cultivation periods but described clear cultivar dependent differences. The tuber weight of the Saebong cultivar in Gangneung and the Eunseon cultivar in Seocheon was superior. The starch content peaked at 7.9% when seed potatoes grown for 80 days in the spring were harvested after autumn cultivation in the Gangneung region, but there was no significant differences in the Seocheon region. Glucose content showed a clear difference depending on the cultivation period, increasing with longer spring cultivation period during autumn cultivation. In conclusion, as a result of the effect of the spring potato cultivation period on the growth, yield, and processing quality of tubers when cultivating potatoes in double-cropping, the differences depending on the cultivation period were insignificant, while cultivar-based disparities were pronounced. The Eunseon cultivar exhibited robust above-ground growth and yield, while the Saebong cultivar demonstrated excellent processing quality.
