  • The effects of retardants B995 and CCC on the growth and yield of soybean cultivar, kwanggyo, were investigated. The 3 application times(4th, 5th and 6th trifoliate leaf stage) combined with 4 concentrations (500, 1000, 2000 and 3000 ppm) were treated, and the retardant solutions were sprayed on the foliage. Only stem length in retardants, rate of podding in application times, and, in concentrations, stem length, number of branch, number of pod per plant and grain yield, were significant. In the inhibition of stem elongation, B995 was more effective than CCC, and rate of podding was the highest in the 4th leaf-spraying. The highest concentration, 3000 ppm, was the most effective in the inhibition of stem elongation and in the increase of number of branch and pod, rate of podding, and in yield. The number of node of mainstem, dry stem weight, chlorophyll and 100 grain weight were not significant with any treat. Yield had positively correlated with number of branch and pod, and rate of podding but negatively with stem length. The retardants was thought to be considerably conducive to the increase of yield.

  • BACKGROUND: This study was carried out to investigate residual characteristics of diethofencarb during ginseng cultivation and processing, and to establish the maximum residue limits (MRL) of ginseng and its processed products. METHODS AND RESULTS: Supervised field trials were conducted from three fields located at Seosan, Goesan and Jeongeup in Korea. Diethofencarb 25% WP was diluted by 500 times and sprayed 4 times onto the ginseng with 10 days interval. The samples were collected at 80 days after final application. The residual amounts of diethofencarb ranged from 0.074 to 0.460 mg/kg in fresh ginseng, from 0.292 to 0.720 mg/kg in dried ginseng, and from 0.208 to 0.557 mg/kg in red ginseng. These data exceeded the ginseng's MRL, 0.3 mg/kg. The processing factors of diethofencarb in processed products were found to be 2.64 and 1.99, respectively for dried and red ginseng. CONCLUSION: Given the lower residual concentration of red ginseng that goes through a more complicated process than dried ginseng, the residual concentrations of diethofencarb in processed ginseng products were found to be dependent on processing method. Therefore, it is necessary to reconsider the MRL of diethofencarb in fresh ginseng and its processed products.

  • Currently, abundant wastes from the palm oil refining process have been generated which are hard to handle. Spent Bleaching Earth (SBE) is the solid waste from this process and leads the cost of elimination to the company. This study aims to utilize the SBE as the alternative material in the non-fired wall tiles. The main raw materials used in non-fired wall tiles consist of laterite soil, fluvial sand, and Portland cement. The experimental formulas have been conducted and divided into 3 groups by varying the percentage of the SBE in main raw materials. The specimens of material mixture have been produced by uniaxial pressing at 100 bars, dimensions in $50{\times}100{\times}8mm$. These specimens are sprayed with water and cured in the air for 7 days. After that, bending strength and water absorption test of these specimens has been performed. It can be concluded that the best formula with the percentage of laterite soil, fluvial sand, Portland cement, and SBE are 60.94%, 13.125%, 22.5%, and 3.435%, respectively. Its bending strength and %water absorption are 0.68 MPa and 5.64%. Material costs of specimen are approximately $0.00276 USD/100g. Furthermore, the comparison of curing period between 7 days and 30 days has been performed. The 30 days of curing period can improve the bending strength of the specimen, but there is no effect on water absorption.

  • Background: As the Positive List System (PLS) is implemented in broad application to agricultural products, attention to the correct use of pesticides is also needed in the production of mulberry leaves and fruit. In this regard, three types of pesticides against mulberry popcorn disease were applied 2 - 3 times both in the field and greenhouses to prepare safety standards. Residual pesticide analysis was conducted on mulberry fruits and leaves. Methods and results: Three pesticieds, thiophanate-methyl, thiophanate-methyl·triflumizole and fluopyram registered as PLS pesticides for mulberry popcorn disease, were sprayed in the Wanju and in Buan regions, after which residual pesticide analysis was conducted using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). As three pesticieds were either undetected or below the permissible level in mulberry fruit, demonstrating that they were suitable for safe spraying. However, 5.6 mg/kg of thiophanate-methyl was detected in the greenhouse after three application, which was slightly above maximum residue limit (MRL). Furthermore the level of thiophanate-methyl·triflumizole was higher than 0.2 mg/kg ("Gwasang No. 2" variety, spraying twice) or similar to 0.09 mg/kg ("Daesim" variety, spraying thrice) the permissible level (0.1T mg/kg) as the thiophanate-methyl was detected in mulberry leaves in the greenhouse. Conclusions: The spraying frequency for controlling mulberry popcorn disease in greenhouses should be limited to two times or less, especially when mulberry leaves are treated with thiophanate-methyl·triflumizole careful consideration is required if the leaves are to be used as food materials.

  • Supercavitation is a phenomenon in which the cavity covers the entire underwater vehicle. The purpose of this paper is to compare and analyze the thermal effect on the cavity characteristics by changing the ventilated gas temperature through computational analysis. For this study, a homogeneous mixture model based on the 3D Navier-Stokes equation was used. As a phase change model, it is its own code considering both pressure change and temperature change. A dimensionless number Tm was presented to analyze the numerical results, and as the Tm increased, the cavity length increased by about 3.6 times and the cavity width by about 3.3 times at 393.15 K compared to room temperature. Analyzing these thermal effects, it was confirmed that rapid heat exchange and heat transfer between the gas phase and the liquid phase occurred at the location where the ventilated gas was sprayed, affecting the cavity characteristics. In addition, it can be confirmed that the initial cavity surface becomes unstable as the ventilated gas temperature increases, and it can be confirmed based on the numerical analysis results that the critical temperature at which the cavity surface becomes unstable is 373.15 K.

  • BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to evaluate the residual characteristics and safety assessment of αcypermethrin and deltamethrin in minor crops, chives and spring onion cultivated in greenhouse. METHODS AND RESULTS: The insecticides α-cypermethrin 2% EC and deltamethrin 1% EC used in the experiment were diluted 1,000 times and then sprayed on chives and spring onion twice with 1-week intervals at 0, 7, 14, and 21 days before harvest. The residual insecticides were extracted from the minor crops using QuEchERS method and analyzed by GC-MS/MS. The average initial residues of α-cypermethrin and deltamethrin in chives after 21 days decreased from 2.74 to 0.82 mg/kg and 1.12 to 0.16 mg/kg, respectively. Similarly, in spring onion the residues after the same periods decreased from 0.26 to <0.01 mg/kg for α-cypermethrin and from 0.07 to <0.01 mg/kg for deltamethrin. CONCLUSION(S): The PHIs (pre-harvest intervals) for α-cypermethrin and deltamethrin in chives are recommended as 14 days before harvest with twice applications of the pesticides, whereas for α-cypermethrin in spring onion PHI of 7 days before harvest is recommended with 3 times of applications and PHI of 21 days for deltamethrin. The theoretical maximum daily intakes of cypermethrin and deltamethrin were 68.8% and 64.2%, respectively, indicating that residues of both compounds did not pose considerable health risks to consumers.

  • To find optimum application methods of Epicoccosorus nematosporus for control of water chestnut, five different concentration of conidial suspensions ($10^[3}$ conidia/ml to $10^[7}$ conidia/ml) fo the fungus were applied 1 to 4 times on 10~40 days old seedlings of water chestnut in greenhouse. Inoculum levels equal to or greater than $10^[5}$ conidia/ml killed significantly more shoots (82.6%~92.1%) and suppressed significantly underground tuber formation compared to inoculum concentration less than $10^[4}$ conidia/ml. When the conidial suspension of ($6.3 {\times} 10^{5}$conidia/ml of E. nematosporus was sprayed 2 times in 7 days interval, percentage of the killed plants was up to 98.7%. Numbers of reshoots and tubers were alsosuppressed significantly compared to one time application. The percents of killed shoots were similar between 10-day-old and 20-day-old seedlings, and significantly higher than those treated on 30- or 40-day-old seedlings. The fungus treated on 20-day-old seedlings was the most effective because there was high number of reshoots from 10-day-old seedlings. Therefore, optimal application conditions for E. nematosporus is 2~3 times of application in 7 days interval with $10^[5}$ conidia/ml on 20-day-old seedling age.

  • The intent of this research is to acquire some basic informations about formulation of the viral pesticide, Hyphantria cunea nuclear polyhedrosis virus and its virulence under field condition. The nuclear polyhedrosis virus was formulated as wettable powder using spreader, sticker and U.V. protector. The formulated product and aqueous virus were diluted with water at the concentration of 1${\times}$106PIB/ml and sprayed on mulberry leaves in the field. The leaves were fed with 3rd instar larvae of H. cunea to determine the inactivation period of the viral pesticides. The aqueous virus was completely inactivated on 5th day after spray, while the formulated one showed a spare mortality to the larvae even on 20th day after spray. In field application test, The fromulated and aqueous virus were sprayed on individual mulberry tree and 3rd instar laevae of H. cunea were fed on the trees. The mortality of the larvae one day after spray of the formulated and aqueous virus were about 50% and 40%, respectively. The formulated virus exhibited a persistent virulence to the larvae up to 9th day after spray, which the mortality was approximately 30%. The residual virulence of the formulated and aqueous virus was extended up to 4th day and 2nd day after spray, respectively.

  • Residues of benfuresate in rice and oxolinic acid in Chinese cabbage were determined through the field experiments in order to establish the safe use and the maximum residue limit(MRL) of these pesticides in Korea. The herbicide benfuresate powder was sprayed into the paddy field with a level of 0.6kg(active ingredient)/ha and rice (Oryza sativa L.) was grown. At harvest, residues of benfuresate in brown rice and stem were analyzed using gas chromatograph. The residue of oxolinic acid in Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris subsp. napus var pekinesis MAKINO) was analyzed using HPLC after foliar-spraying this fungicide into the cabbages at a level of 15kg/ha. The recovery efficiencies of benfuresate and oxolinic acid were 87-89% and 90-95%, respectively. The respective residues of benfuresate in rice and oxolinic acid in Chinese cabbage were in the range of 0.27-0.46 mg/kg and 0.23-1.53kg/kg. Residual concentrations of these pesticides in crops increased with the increased application frequencies, followed the first-order kinetics and linearly decreased with time. The highest residue of 1.53 mg/kg of oxolinic acid was observed when this fungicide was sprayed six times until three days prior to harvest, but this level was far lower t㏊n 5 mg/kg, which is the maximum residue limit(MRL) set by FAO/WHO.
