Full-scale Fire Suppression Test for Application of Water Mist System in Road Tunnel (미분무수 소화시스템의 도로터널 적용을 위한 실물 화재 실험)

  • The full-scale experiments are carried out to investigate the fire suppression characteristics of water-based fire fighting systems in a road tunnel. Applied systems are the low-pressure water spray system at 3.5 bar and the high-pressure water mist system at 60 bar. The water flow rate of the high-pressure system is one sixth only of the water spray system. A passenger car and a heptane fuel pan with area of $1.4m^2$ are used as fire sources. A blower system is installed at the tunnel exit to realize the longitudinal ventilation conditions (0.9~3.8 m/s) in the tunnel. Temperatures from the fire source to the down-stream direction are measured by K-type thermocouple trees. The experimental results show that the cooling effect of the high pressure water mist system in the test conditions were equivalent to that of the low pressure water spray system for B-class fire.

  • An experimental study was performed to understand spray characteristics of the V type rotating fuel nozzle with orifice diameters by using high speed rotational system. The experimental apparatus consist of a high speed rotational system, fuel injection system and acrylic case. The droplet size and velocity were measured by PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) and spray was visualized by using Nd-Yag laser-based flash photography. From the test results, droplet size is reduced with increasing orifice diameter up to the critical value. When increasing orifice diameter over than this critical value, droplet size is not decreased with increasing the orifice diameter. This is due to the irregular distribution of the liquid sheet around the inner surface of injection orifice.

Effects of Spray Times and Ventilation Method on the Seedling Growth of Fruit Vegetables (관수회수 및 송풍처리가 과채류의 묘 생장에 미치는 영향)

  • A multipurpose operating system was developed to adjust both spray times and ventilation method without a configuration of the moving path and the type of the greenhouse. The multipurpose working system proved to be a reliable system for testing the growth quality of the fruit vegetables in the greenhouse. The results are as follows. The first leaf, diameter of a stem, leaf area, and average stem diameter in the Cucumber seedling growth were repressed by high-speed ventilation, but was not repressed by spray times. The first leaf in the Tomato seedling growth was repressed as ventilation velocity was high, but the average stem diameter was not repressed. While the Tomato was given water three times a day, the diameter of a stem and the leaf area were increased as ventilation speed became higher. However, those were different other factors. The Tomato leaf area was larger when given water twice a day than that in hand spray, but showed no difference with ventilation speed. The first leaf, the diameter of a stem and the leaf area of a Red pepper were lower in automatic spraying with ventilation than those in hand spray.

System Design for Developing the Remote Controlled Sprayer of Pear Trees (배나무 무인 방제기의 개발을 위한 살포 시스템 설계)

  • A remote controlled sprayer has designed, manufactured and experimented to spray well on pear trees with pesticides. This study was executed to automate pest management of pear trees. Types of spray nozzle, which was used on the system, were analyzed experimentally to find an optimal spray equipment configuration with several nozzles. Attributions of ultrasonic sensors were analyzed to adjust spraying distance of an unmanned sprayer system. This paper investigated shapes of pear trees and cultivating environment of pear orchard. In order to select optimal spray environment, liquid distribution was measured while angle of nozzle was changed. Additionally, liquid distribution by distance and sprayed liquid capacity by side distance were measured. According to information of shapes of pear trees and cultivating environment of pear orchard, sprayer frames of an unmanned sprayer system were manufactured and sprayer frames were suitable for interval of pear trees. The sprayer system could adjust width of sprayer frames to 2.5 m and height of sprayer frames to 1.7 m. Optimal angle of nozzle, and optimal distance between objects and nozzle were $15^{\circ}$ and 0.8 m. When side distance was placed from 1.2 m to 1.8 m, sprayed capacity reached to the highest amount.

Basic Study on Spray Behavior for Application of Biofuel to Diesel Engines (Palm Oil-Considering Viscosity) (바이오연료의 엔진 적용을 위한 분무거동 기초연구(팜유-점성고려))

  • Diesel engines are most suitable for biodiesel fuel because diesel fuel has a higher cetane number compared to gasoline and diesel engines have no spark ignition system; hence, engine conversion is easy and cost effective. For these reasons, in this study, the spray behavior characteristics of vegetable palm oil were analyzed by using a common-rail injection system of a commercial diesel engine, and the results were compared with those obtained for the diesel fuel. The injection pressures and blend ratios of palm oil and diesel fuel (BD3, BD5, BD20, BD30, BD50, and BD100) were the main parameters. The experiments were conducted for different injection pressures-500 bar, 1000 bar, 1500 bar, and 1600 bar-by setting the injection duration at $500{\mu}s$. We determined there is no significant difference in the macro characteristics of the spray behavior (spray penetration and spray angle) in response to any change in the blend ratio of palm oil and diesel fuel at a fixed injection pressure. In particular, all experiments showed a spray angle of approximately $15^{\circ}$.

An Experimental Study on Spray Characteristics of Directly Injected Bio-Ethanol-Gasoline Blended Fuel By Varying Fuel Temperature (직접분사식 바이오 에탄올-가솔린 혼합연료의 연료온도에 따른 분무 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • As environment problem became a worldwide issue, countries are tightening regulations regarding greenhouse gas reduction and improvement of air pollution problems. With these circumstances, one of the renewable energies produced from biomass is getting attention. Bio-ethanol, which is applicable to SI engine, showed a positive effect on the PFI (Port Fuel Injection) type. However, Ethanol has a problem in homogeneous mixture formation because it has high latent heat of vaporization characteristics and in the GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) type, mixture formation is required quickly after fuel injection. Particularly, South Korea is one of the countries with great temperature variation among seasons. With this reason, South Korea supply fuel additive for smooth engine operation during winter. Therefore, experimental study and investigation about application possibility of blending fuel is necessary. This paper demonstrates the spray characteristics by using the CVC direct injection and setting the bio-ethanol blending fuel temperature close to the temperature during each seasons: -7, 25, $35^{\circ}C$. The diameter and the width of the CVC are 86mm and 39mm. High-pressure fuel supply system was used for target injection pressure. High-speed camera was used for spray visualization. The experiment was conducted by setting the injection pressure and ambient pressure according to each temperature of bio-ethanol blending fuel as a parameter. The result of spray visualization experiment demonstrates that as the temperature of the fuel is lower, the atomization quality is lower, and this increase spray penetration and make mixture formation difficult. Injection strategy according to fuel temperature and bio-ethanol blending rate is needed for improving characteristics.

A Numerical Study of the Effect of Sprinkler Spray on the Flow Characteristics Induced by Fire (스프링클러 분무가 화재유동특성에 미치는 영향에 관한 수치해석 연구)

  • The present study investigates the effects of sprinkler spray on fire driven flow characteristics in a compartment based on numerical approach. The FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator), a widely used fire field model, was used to simulate the fire induced flow and sprinkler spray and a series of grid independence tests have been performed to obtain the optimal grid size. In order to validate the result predicted by FDS model, the calculated results were compared with experimental results of Magnone et al.. The FDS model matches quite well to experiments in temperature profile and mass flux through doorway, however, the discrepancy between the FDS model and experiments increases with increasing water discharge rate. As with previous study, the FDS calculation also shows a decrease of mass flow rate of combustion products through doorway due to the sprinkler spray. This study can contribute to optimize the sprinkler system design and verify the validity of the fire field model with sprinkler spray.

Experimental and Numerical Analysis of DME Spray Characteristics in Common-rail Fuel System (커먼레일 연료시스템에서의 DME 분무 특성에 대한 실험과 해석적 연구)

  • Spray visualization and computer simulation of a DME injector have been conducted to investigate the enlarged injection hole diameter effect. To increase the reliability of the computational result, simulation results have been compared with the visualization test results, and the behaviors of a DME spray under various high-pressure and -temperature conditions have been computed. This study shows a discrepancy of 3.57% between the experimental and the computational results of penetration length for an injection pressure of 35 MPa and ambient pressure of 5 MPa. When simulating the engine conditions, the maximum penetration length of a fully developed DME spray is 42 mm when the temperature to pressure ratio is 300 K/MPa. The DME spray behavior is dominantly affected by the ambient pressure under the condition that the ratio is less than 300 K/MPa, and by the ambient temperature under the condition that the ratio is more than 300 K/MPa.

Measurements of Three-Dimensional Droplet Velocities Using the Holographic System (홀로그래피를 이용한 분무 액적의 3차원 속도 측정)

  • The Holographic Particle Velocimetry system can be a promising optical tool for the measurements of three dimensional particle velocities. In this study, the holographic panicle velocimetry system was used to measure the sizes and velocities of droplets formed by a commercial full cone spray nozzle. Uncertainty analysis was performed to identify the sources of all relevant errors and to evaluate their magnitude. The droplet velocities ranged from 10.3 to 13.3 m/s with average uncertainty of ${\pm}1.6m/s$, which is ${\pm}14%$ of the mean droplet velocity. Compared with relatively small uncertainties of velocity components in the normal direction to the optical axis, the uncertainty of the optical axis component is ${\pm}3.6m/s$. This is due to the long depth of field of droplet images in the optical axis, which is inherent feature of holographic system using forward-scattering object wave of particles.
