  • The survey was conducted to investigate athletes# beverage drinking pattern and their knowledge concerning hydration and fluid replacement. The subjects were 371 collegiate athletes (235 males and 136 females) in Seoul and Daejun area. The mean age of the athletes was 20.44 y. The prevalence of sports drink use among subjects at ordinary time, after training, and after competition were 9.0%, 17.1%, and 57.3% respectively. Primary source of sports drink information were advertisement (57.3%), friends or colleagues (14.9%), and coaches (7.0%) The purchase of sports drink was done by athletes themselves (76.0%) and coaches (22.6%). The most influential factor in choice of sports drink was taste (61.5%), brand name (15.1%), composition (12.4%), and advertisement (6.7%) However, only 9.5% of the subjects answered they know well about the sports drink they are drinking. To the 15 questions to survey the nutritional knowledge about fluid and intake of sports drink, subjects responded correctly to 58.47%. Their sex or experiences of nutrition education didn#t affect to their knowledge. As the result, the prevalence of collegiate athletes# sports drink use was high but their knowledge about it was not sufficient. These results suggest that an effective and practical nutrition education for adequate hydration and choice of sports drink for atheletes should be considered.

All subjects were completed treadmill exercise protocol using GXT at before (B) and after (A) experimental treatment of one week. The V02max, anaerobic threshold (AT) were measured by gas analysis and heart rate (HR) were measure by polar system at pre, max, post, post 30 min and post 60 min. Blood samples were collected to analyze blood components. The V02max were significantly increased in OGA compared to OGB whereas the V02max and AT in OGA were significantly higher than PGA. The blood lactate concentration were shown higher decrease rate in OGA compared to Doth OGB and PGA during recovery whereas LDH and Na were significantly increased in OGA compared to both OGB and PGA. The blood concentrations of CI and K were significantly increased in OGA compared to PGA. There were no significant differences were founded in WBC, RBC, Hct, Hb and other components associated with energy sources(glucose, TG, TC, HDL, LDL, creatinine, CPK). These results suggested that this oriental herbal drink can be administrated to improve aerobic capacity in long distance runners.

  • This study was designed to investigate the effects of sports drink including the extract from Prunus mume on the changes of oxygen uptake, minute ventilaton, heart rate, and blood lactate concentration during 1 hour treadmill running exercise corresponding to 75%VO$_2$max. Subjects were 16 male athletes(long distance runners and tennis players). The changing patterns of oxygen uptake and minute ventilation showed no significnat difference among all types of sports drink, but the minute vetilation of the placebo group showed a higher value than type I group during submaximal exercise. Although the changing patterns of heart rate and blood lactate concentration showed no significnat difference among all types of sports drink, but type E group showed a lower heart rate compared to Placebo group. And blood lactate concentration of placebo group showed a higher value compared to the value corresponding to lactate threshold during submaimal exercise. but the other types of sports drink showed a lower value of blood lactate concentration. Especially blood lactate threshold of type D and E groups showed a lower value (range from 1.44 to 2.00mM) during submaximal exercise. In these results, the sports drink including the extract from Prunus mume showed no significant effects to the changes of oxygen uptake, minute ventilaton, heart rate, and blood lactate concentration during 1 hour treadmill runnuing exercise corresponding to 75%VO$_2$max. But it could be suggested the positive effects of the intake of sports drink including the extract from Prunus mume on the inhibition of exercise-induced fatigue during submaximal exercise, because of the lower changing Patterns of heart rate, blood lactate concentration, and ventilation efficiency in this results.

  • This study was performed to find out the persimmon vinegar as a functional drink on reducing blood lipids and enhancing exercise performance. For these, thirty two Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into 4 groups; control (CONT), water placebo with high fat diet control (ACON), high fat diet with 2.5 times diluted persimmon vinegar ingestion (PV2.5), and high fat diet with 5.0 times diluted persimmon vinegar ingestion (PV5.0). Body weight was not different. Abdominal fat pads were statistically reduced in PV2.5 and PV5.0 compared to CONT and ACON. Blood glucose was not significant but TC, LDL-C and TG were lower in PV2.5 and PV5.0 than other groups, and HDL-C in PV2.5 was the highest among groups. Glycogen contents in the muscle and liver were higher in PV2.5 and PV5.0 compared to CONT and ACON. These results suggested that persimmon vinegar ingestion may inhibit the blood lipids increase and increase glycogen storage which possibly enhancing exercise performance. Therefore, persimmon vinegar has the possibility as the functional drink.

  • Relative sweetness of sucralose, an intensive sweetener, to sucrose or fructose in binary model solution and beverage systems was examined. Sensory properties of sucralose solution, orange flavored beverage and sports drink containing sucralose were evaluated at the equi-sweetness to sucrose or fructose. Consumer acceptability tests were performed on orange flavored beverage. Relative sweetness of sucralose to sucrose was 350 and 500 in binary model solution and orange flavored beverage, respectively, while that of sucralose to fructose in sports drink was 550. All the sensory properties, except astringency, of sucralose solution examined were similar to those of sucrose solution. The sensory properties of orange flavored beverage, in which 50% sucrose was replaced with sucralose, were very close, and showed comparable or higher overall acceptability to that containing sucrose only. When fructose was replaced with sucralose in sports drink sour, salty and bitter tastes, metallic flavor, and astringency slightly increased.

  • Sports drinks help optimize and improve performance by delaying and eliminating the buildup of fatigue-causing substances in the body during exercise. Saengmaeg-san is a nature-friendly traditional beverage that has no side effects on the human body and can quench thirst. However, studies on the relationship between exercise ability and Saengmaeg-san are insufficient. The purpose of this study was to prescribe Saengmaeg-san during the summer training period of 4 weeks and to analyze the effect on body composition and exercise performance. Seventeen male participants were divided into 3 groups (Saengmaeg-san acid intake group [n=9], placebo group [n=8]), and body composition (height, weight, muscle mass, fat mass, BMI) and conducted exercise performance (total exercise time and HRmax). In our study, Saengmaeg-san intake had a positive effect on exercise performance, such as decreased body fat percentage, increased exercise time, and decreased HRmax. Therefore, Saengmaeg-san showed the potential as a sports drink. In the future, additional studies on fatigue-related substances, immune function-markers, and blood lipids are needed in order to clearly explain the change in exercise performance due to consumption of Saengmaeg-san.
