  • We investigated the antipodal-symmetric dispersion maps of a dispersion-managed link with a midway optical phase conjugator to compensate for the distorted 960 Gb/s wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) signal caused by these effects. The proposed antipodal-symmetric dispersion map has various shapes depending on the detailed design scheme. We confirmed that the dispersion-managed link designed with the dispersion map of the antipodal-symmetric structure is more advantageous than the conventional uniform dispersion map for compensating WDM channels. It was also confirmed that among the antipodal-symmetric structures, the dispersion map configured with the S-1-profile, in which S is inverted up and down, was more effective for distortion compensation than the dispersion map configured with the S-profile. In particular, we confirmed that the S-1-profile can broaden the optical pulse width intensively at a short transmission distance, more effectively compensating for the distorted WDM channel. Because this structure makes the intensity of the optical pulse relatively weak, it can decrease the nonlinear Kerr effect.

  • This work designs an eighteen-channel bidirectional Intensity Modulation with Direct Detection (IM/DD) Wavelength Division Multiplexing-Passive Optical Network (WDM-PON) system. The proposed system meets the requirement of the ITU-T 5G fronthaul link suggested design in G-series Recommendations-Supplement 66. The newly designed system, with a 25Gb/s/λ data rate (450Gbps as a system capacity), has been tested and simulated using OptiSystem V.19 software. The system has been evaluated by the BER with respect to variable the optical span and CW laser power. Based on the ITU-T recommendations, the simulation results demonstrate that this system might be used as an F1 and as an Fx 5G fronthaul link for functional split choices starting from options 1 to 7a. These options are required under 25Gbps/λ for each upstream and downstream link direction. Furthermore, the proposed system utilized a bidirectional single-mode optical fiber within short optical spans of up to 10 km. The proposed system is characterized by a low-cost, simple, DSP-free and amplifier-free system with a reasonable system capacity.

  • SPLITT fractionation (SF) allows continuous (and thus a preparative scale) separation of micronsized particles into two size fractions ('fraction-a' and 'fraction-b'). SF is usually carried out in a thin rectangular channel with two inlets and two outlets, which is equipped with flow stream splitters at the inlet and the outlet of the channel, respectively. A new large scale splitter-less gravitational SF (GSF) system had been assembled, which was designed to eliminate the flow stream splitters and thus is operated by the full feed depletion (FFD) mode (FFD-GSF). In the FFD mode, there is only one inlet through which the sample is fed. There is no carrier liquid fed into the channel, and thus prevents the sample dilution. The effects of the sample-feeding flow rate, the channel thickness on the fractionation efficiency (FE, number % of particles that have the size predicted by theory) of FFD-GSF was investigated using industrial polyurethane (PU) latex beads. The carrier liquid was water containing 0.1% FL-70 (particle dispersing agent) and 0.02% sodium azide (used as bactericide). The sample loading rate was varied from about 4 to 7 L/hr with the sample concentration fixed at 0.01%. The GSF channel thickness was varied from 900 to $1300{\mu}m$. Particles exiting the GSF channel were collected and monitored by optical microscopy (OM). Sample recovery was monitored by collecting the fractionated particles on a $0.45{\mu}m$ membrane filter. It was found that FE of fraction-a was increased as the channel thickness increases, and FE of fraction-b was increased as the flow rate was increased. In all cases, the sample recovery has higher than 95%. It seems the new splitter-less FFD GSF system could become a useful tool for large scale separations of various types of micron-sized particles.

  • Middle-infrared (MIR) spectral region between 3.0 and $5.0\;{\mu}m$ in wavelength is useful for observing high temperature events such as volcanic activities and forest fire. However, atmospheric effects and sun irradiance in day time has not been well studied for this MIR spectral band. The objectives of this basic study is to evaluate atmospheric effects and eventually to estimate surface temperature from a single channel MIR image, although a typical approach utilize split-window method using more than two channels. Several parameters are involved for the correction including various atmospheric data and sun-irradiance at the area of interest. To evaluate the effect of sun irradiance, MODIS MIR images acquired in day and night times were used for comparison. Atmospheric parameters were modeled by MODTRAN, and applied to a radiative transfer model for estimating the sea surface temperature. MODIS Sea Surface Temperature algorithm based upon multi-channel observation was performed in comparison with results from the radiative transfer model from a single channel. Temperature difference of the two methods was $0.89{\pm}0.54^{\circ}C$ and $1.25{\pm}0.41^{\circ}C$ from the day-time and night-time images, respectively. It is also shown that the emissivity effect has by more largely influenced on the estimated temperature than atmospheric effects. Although the test results encourage using a single channel MR observation, it must be noted that the results were obtained from water body not from land surface. Because emissivity greatly varies on land, it is very difficult to retrieval land surface temperature from a single channel MIR data.

  • This paper proposes a hybrid optical lines composed of single-mode fiber(SMF) and multi-mode fiber(MMF) for gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network(GPON) using a WDM method with a single light source per each channel, and reports the results of transmission performance the proposed lines. The transmission link uses a direct modulated DFB-LD for high speed downstreams at the optical line terminal(OLT) of central office(CO) and a low cost SFP type transceiver for low-speed upstream in optical network unit(ONU). To split or combine the transmission channels, wavelength MUX/DEMUX are used in the optical line section, and MMFs not longer than 1 km are attached to the SMF lines at the ONU side of the WDM-PON links. We have performed the transmission experiment on the downstream of 2.5 Gbit/s, and 1.25 Gbit/s, and the upstream of 1.25 Gbit/s, and 622 Mbit/s which are recommended by ITU-T G.984.2. The transmission margin and feasibility of the proposed links have been tested to be suitable up to 2.5 Gbit/s transmission.

  • To increase throughput efficiency and improve performance, FTN(Faster Than Nyquist) method and LDPC(Low Density Parity Code) codes are employed in DVB-S3 system. In this paper, we proposed efficient turbo equalization model to minimize inter symbol interference induced by FTN transmission. This paper introduces two conventional scheme employing SIC(Successive Interference Cancellation) and BCJR equalizer. Then, we proposed new scheme to resolve problems in this two conventional scheme. To make performance improved in turbo equalization model, the outputs of LDPC and BCJR equalizer are iteratively exchange probabilistic information. In fed LDPC outputs as extrinsic informa tion of BCJR equalizer. we split LDPC output to separate bit probabilities. We compare performance of proposed scheme to that of conventional methods through using simulation in AWGN(Additive White Gaussian Noise) channel. We confirmed that performance was improved compared to conventional methods as increasing throughput parameters of FTN.

  • Adaptive digital filters with long impulse response such as acoustic echo canceller and active noise controller suffer from slow convergence and computational burden. Subband techniques and multirate signal processing have been recently developed to improve the problem of computational complexity and slow convergence in conventional adaptive filter. Any FIR transfer function can be realized as a serial connection of interpolators followed by subfilters with a sparse impulse response. In this case, each interpolator which is related to the column vector of Hadamard matrix has band-pass magnitude response characteristics shifted uniformly. Subband technique using Hadamard transform and decimation of subband signal to reduce sampling rate are adapted to system modeling and acoustic noise cancellation In this paper, delayless subband structure with nonuniform bandwidth has been proposed to improve the performance of the convergence speed without aliasing due to decimation, where input signal is split into subband one using tree-structured filter bank, and the subband signal is decimated by a decimator to reduce the sampling rate in each channel, then subfilter with sparse impulse response is transformed to full band adaptive filter coefficient using Hadamard transform. It is shown by computer simulations that the proposed method can be adapted to general adaptive filtering.

  • In this paper, we propose a new interference cancellation(IC) receiver for multirate Multicarrier DS/CDMA(MC DS/CDMA) system based on orthogonal variable spreading factor(OVSF) code. The users are assigned different lengths of OVSF codes as a spreading code according to their data rates and the active users having same representative code split into a group for effective cancellation. The code grouping interference cancellation(IC) receiver performs cancellation between the groups first and cancellation within group. This proposed IC receiver can cancel the interferences using desired user's code information and then desired signals are detected. The results show that the large improvement in performance can be attained by group-wise IC scheme and we can make the effective systems compare to conventional ones. The bit error rate of the system is analytically derived in frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel and we also compare the system performance with that of multirate DS/CDMA system. We also analyze the performance of the proposed system with same bandwidth and processing gain. The results show the large improvement in performance that can be attained by cancellation scheme.

  • Technologies for disaster management are highly sought areas for research and commercial deployment. Landslides, Flood, cyclones, earthquakes, forest fires and road/train accidents are some causes of disasters. Capturing video and accessing data in real time from the disaster site can help first responders make split second decisions which may save human lives and valuable resource destructions. In this context the communication technologies performing the task should have high bandwidth and low latency which only 5G can deliver. But unfortunately in India, deployment of the 5G mobile communication systems is yet to give a shape and again in remote areas unavailability of 4G signals is still severe. In this situation the authors have proposed, simulated and experimented a 4G-5G communication scheme where from the disaster site the signals will be transmitted by a 5G terminal to a nearby 4G-5G gateway installed in a mobile vehicle. The received 5G signal will be further relayed by the 4G-5G gateway to the fixed 4G base station for onward transmission towards the disaster management station for decision making, deployment and relief monitoring. The 4G-5G gateway acts as a relay and converter of 5G signal to 4G signal and vice versa. This relayed system can be further mounted on a vehicle mounted relay (VMR) as proposed by 3GPP in Release 18. The scheme is also in the same line of context with Verizon's, "Tactical Humanitarian Operations Response" (THOR) vehicle concept. The performance of the link is studied in different channel conditions, the throughput achieved is superb. The authors have implemented the above mentioned system towards smart campus networking and monitoring landslides activities which are common in their regions.

  • Wideband speech, characterized by a bandwidth of about 7 kHz (50-7000 Hz), provides a substantial quality improvement in terms of naturalness and intelligibility. Although higher data rates are required, it has extended its application to audio and video conferencing, high-quality multimedia communications in mobile links or packet-switched transmissions, and digital AM broadcasting. In this paper, we present a new bandwidth-scalable coder for wideband speech and audio signals. The proposed coder spits 8kHz signal bandwidth into two narrow bands, and different coding schemes are applied to each band. The lower-band signal is coded using the ITU-T G.729/G.729E coder, and the higher-band signal is compressed using a new algorithm based on the gammatone filter bank with an invertible auditory model. Due to the split-band architecture and completely independent coding schemes for each band, the output speech of the decoder can be selected to be a narrowband or wideband according to the channel condition. Subjective tests showed that, for wideband speech and audio signals, the proposed coder at 14.2/18 kbit/s produces superior quality to ITU-T 24 kbit/s G.722.1 with the shorter algorithmic delay.
