  • The important problem in high speed spindle is to reduce and minimize the thermal effect by motor and bearing. This paper presents the thermal characteristic analysis for a high speed spindle with and without cooling at the rear part, considering the viscosity and the flow rate of cooling oil. A high speed spindle is composed of angular contact ceramic ball bearings, high speed built-in motor, oil jacket cooling and so on. The thermal analyses of high speed spindle need to minimize the thermal effect and maximize the cooling effect and they are carried out under the various cooling conditions. Heat generations of the bearing and the high speed motor are estimated from the theoretical and experimental data. This result can be applied to the design and manufacture of a high speed motor spindle.

  • This paper discusses an entire procedure for a robust controller design and its implementation of an AMB (active magnetic bearing) spindle, which is part II of the papers presenting details of system modeling and robust control of an AMB spindle. Since there are various uncertainties in an AMB system and reliability is the most important factor for applications, robust control naturally gains attentions in this field. However, tight evaluations of various uncertainties based on experimental data and appropriate performance weightings for an AMB spindle are still ongoing research topics. In addition, there are few publications on experimental justification of a designed robust controller. In this paper, uncertainties for the AMB spindle are classified and described based on the measurement and identification results of part I, and an appropriate performance weighting scheme for the AMB spindle is developed. Then, a robust control is designed through the mixed ${\mu}$ synthesis based on the validated accurate nominal model of part I, and the robust controller is reduced considering its closed loop performance. The reduced robust controller is implemented and confirmed with measurements of closed-loop responses. The AMB spindle is operated up to 57,600 rpm and performance of the designed controller is compared with a benchmark PID controller through experiments. Experiments show that the robust controller offers higher stiffness and more efficient control of rigid modes than the benchmark PID controller.

  • Vibration of a rotating disk-spindle system is analyzed by using Hamilton's principle, FEM and substructure synthesis. A rotating disk undergoes the rigid body motion and the elastic deformation. It s equation of motion is derived by Kirchhoff plate theory and von Karman nonlinear strain. A rotating shaft is described by Rayleigh beam theory considering the axial rigid body motion. The stationay shaft supporting the rotating disk-spindle-bearing system is modeled by Euler beam theory, and the stiffness of ball bearing is determined by A.B.Jones' theory. FEM is used to solve the derived governing equations, and substructure synthesis is introduced to assemble each structure of the rotating disk-spindle system. The developed theory is applied to the spindle system of a 35' computer hard disk drive with 3 disks to verify the simulation results. The simulation results agree very well with the experimental ones. The proposed theory may be effectively expanded to the complex structure of a disk-spindle system.

  • This paper presents a method of detection localized defects on tapered roller bearing in main spindle of machine tool system. The feature vectors, i.e. statistical parameters, in time-domain analysis technique have been calculated to extract useful features from acoustic emission signals. These feature vectors are used as the input feature of an neural network to classify and detect bearing defects. As a results, the detection of bearing defect conditions could be sucessfully performed by using an neural network with statistical parameters of acoustic emission signals.

  • As the rotational speed and the track density are increased, the vibration of disk/spindle system becomes critical issue in order to reduce the track mis-registration. In this work, we propose a simple inclined air bearing (20${\times}$20 mm) system which is located very near to the rotating poly-carbonate disk, and investigate suppressing effect for the disk vibration mode (0,0) both experimentally and numerically. We find dynamic stiffness and damping coefficients of air bearing and then apply those values to the disk vibration analysis. Numerical results show about 10 percent difference comparing to the experimental results. Also we investigate the reduction of disk vibration and power consumption with two different kinds of inclined bearing for the normal disk drive system experimentally. We find inclined air bearing can reduce about 30 percents of the transverse disk vibration.

  • The new trends in main spindle design of Machining Center are focused on high-speed, high-precision and high-stiffness. As a main spindle bearing, the angular-contact ball bearing is well used. A rolling bearing is usually only a small part of a larger mechanical system, but its performance can have a great influence on the functioning of the whole machine. This work is about fatigue life tester design and monitoring of defected rolling-element bearings. The major work is done via experiments and the vibration signal is analysised by means of frequency spectrum technique. By analyzing the frequency spectrum, it is possible to view the condition of the bearings.

  • This paper numerically analyzes the dynamic characteristics of a spindle system supported by two identical journal bearings considering bearing span that has dynamic load due to its mass unbalance. The Reynolds equation is transformed to solve a herringbone grooved journal bearing. The Reynolds equations are solved using FEM in order to calculate the pressure distribution in a fluid film. Reaction forces and friction torque are obtained by integrating the pressure and shear stress along the fluid film, respectively. Dynamic behaviors, such as whirl radius or angular displacement of a rotor, are determined by solving its nonlinear equations of motion with the Runge-Kutta method. This research shows that the same bearing spans of upper and lower journal bearings produce the minimum runout and friction torque of a spindle system.
