  • From the legumes of Albizzia julibrissin Durazzini (Leguminosae), a mixture of long-chain alcohols, ${\alpha}-spinasterol$, a mixture of acylated sterol glycosides and ${\alpha}-spinasteryl$ $3-O-{\beta}-D-glucoside$ were isolated. Two mixtures of long-chain alcohols and acylated sterol glycosides were characterized as 1-hexacosanol (major) and 1-tetracosanol, and $3-O-[6'-O-palmitoyl-{\beta}-D-glucosyl]-{\alpha}-spinasterol$ (major) and its 6'-O-stearoyl ester. All compounds were identified on the basis of spectral data and chemical reactions.

  • The photochemical study of Viscum album (Loranthaceae) led to the isolation of twelve compounds, lupeol (1), betulonic acid (2), betulinic acid (3), terminic acid (4), ursolic acid (5), $\beta$-sitosterol (6), $\alpha$- spinasterol (7), oleanolic acid (8) , 5-hydroxy-1- (4′-hydoxyphenyl) -7- (4"-hydroxyphenyl) -hepta-1- en-3-on (9), 2′-hydroxy -4′, 6′- dimethoxychalcone -4-O-glycoside (10) ,2′-hydroxy-4′, 6′-dimethoxychalcone -4-O- [apiosal(1longrightarrow12)]glucoside (11) and syringin (12). Their structures were established by chemical and spectroscopic methods. The cytotoxicity of the isolated compounds was evaluated by sulforhodamine B assay against five cultured human tumor cell lines.

  • By cytotoxicity screening of the 65 Korean medicinal plants against leukemia L1210 and P388D$_{1}$ cell line using the MTT assay in vitro, Albizzia julibrissin was studied. This plant was extracted with MeOH and MeOH extract was solvent-fractionated with CHCl$_{3}$, EtOAc and n-BuOH in sequence. Each fraction by various solvents system was purified by column chromatography and preparative TLC, and four compounds were isolated. The structure of each compound was deduced from UV, IR, $^{1}$H-HMR, $^{13}$ C-NMR and CI-MS spectral data. The cytotoxic activity ($IC_{50}$/_ of the compounds, quercetin-3-rhamnoside, 4',5,7-trihydroxyfla-van-3-glucoside, spinasterol-3-glucoside and acacic acid lactone, were evaluated as 5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, 2$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, 1 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml against L1210 and as 9$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, 10$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, 1.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, 1.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml and 0.9 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml against P388D$_{1}$, respectively.

  • From the roots of Codonopsis pilosula (Franch.) Nannfeldt (Campanulaceae), ${\alpha}$-spinasterol, mp $165{\sim}7^{\circ}$ and alpha-spinasteryl D-glucoside, mp $283{\sim}5^{\circ}$, were isolated and identified on the basis of chemical and spectral data. Spectral data showed that $\Delta^7-stigmasterol$ and its glucoside were contained as minor components.

  • An acylated steryl glucoside preparation has been isolated from Phytolacca esculenta $_{VAN}H_{OUTTE}$. Two componentsof the vsterol moiety are ${\alpha}$-spinasterol and ${\delta}^7$-stigmastenol. Fatty acids are palmitic, stearic and myristic acids, and are located on C-6 of the glucose portion. 6'-Palmityl-${\alpha}$-spinasteryl-${\beta}$-glucoside is the main component.

  • In the previous paper the isolation of .alpha.-spinasterol and its glucoside from ether fraction of Codonopsis pilosula was reported. In continuation of earlier work, further component was investigated and led to isolation three tirterpenoids. Repeated column chromatography on silica gel of the ether extract resulted in the isolation of taraxeryl acetate, mp $298~301^{\circ}$, friedelin, mp $263~265^{\circ}$, and taraxerol, mp $289~8^{\circ}$. All the compounds were identified on the basis of spectral data and chemical reactions.

  • Plants are known as important source in the search for new drugs. The twelve compounds from Viscum album (Loranthaceae), lupeol (1), betulonic acid (2), betulinic acid (3), terminic acid (4), ursolic acid (5), $\beta$-sitosterol (6), $\alpha$-spinasterol (7), oleanolic acid (8), 5-hydroxy-1-(4′-hydoxyphenyl)-7-(4"-hydroxyphenyl)-hepta-1-en-3-on (9), 2′-hydroxy-4′,6′-dimethoxychalcone-4-O-glucoside (10), 2′-hydroxy-4′,6′-dimethoxychalcone-4-O-[apiosyl(l$\longrightarrow$2)]glucoside (11) and syringin (12) were evaluated for their immunomodulatory properties. Compounds 6 and 11 induced the macrophage tumoricidal activity and the lymphocyte blastogenesis. In addition, these compounds stimulated the macrophages to induce the production of TNF-$\alpha$ and NO. These findings suggest that compounds 6 and 11 are modulating various elements of the host immune response.

  • Steroid and terpenoid constituents of 3 species of genus Phytolacca have been examined by TLC. All contained ${\alpha}$-spinasterol, its glucoside and acylated glucoside, jaligonic acid and its methylester, esculentic acid and its methylester, and 10 phytolaccosides. Jaligonic acid was the major free triterpenoid and phytolaccoside E was the major saponin in all plants. Bayogenin, oleanolic acid, spergulagenic acid, acinosolic acid, hederogenin, and their derivatives contained in other Phytolacca spp. were not found in these plants.
