Polyurethane NCO prepolymers were synthesized with the polyols such as PTMG, GP and the isocyanate such as TDI at $40^{\circ}C$ for 8.5 minutes. As average molecular weights (${\bar{M_n}}$: 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000) of PTMG, and GP were decreased from 4000 to 1000, ratio of oil gelation increased from 298%, to 440%, for Bunker B. When oil and water were emulsified, the ratio of gelation was increased approximately two times. Ratio of gelation for emulsive Bunker B was increased from 402% to 910%, for PTMG1000 and increased from 440%, W 958% for GPI1000. Ratio of oil gelation for emulsive Bunk C which has higher viscosity than Bunker B was measured w 923% for PTMG1000 made with chain extender, i.e. EG, and measured to 1098% for GP1000. The gel made from GP which has three functional group showed soft and strong characteristic, as a result, it can be removed easily from oil spilled ocean.

For the last decade, some 400 small and large oil spill accidents have occurred every year. Such accident blow a serious damage to the marine resource and ecosystem, which can't be estimated in terms of economic and environmental losses. The physical/chemical methods used currently may be effective at the initial stage of accidents, but they can't serve to remove the spilled oil completely. Moreover, the dispersant may lead to a secondary contamination detrimental to the lives inhabiting wet lands, beaches and tidal zone. Thus, a new decomposing technology Is required for the environmentally sensitive areas. Bioremediation is the active use of biological techniques to mitigate the consequences of a spill using biological processes and refers both of stimulation of pollutant biodegradation and/or to enhance ecosystem recovery Bioremediation is an economically attractive method for the clean-up of oil-contaminated area. Bioremediation has been demonstrated to be an effective oil spill countermeasure for use in cobble, sand beach, salt marsh, and mud flat environment.
A basic study for the development of a disk type oil skimmer for a tank lorry, compares via experiments to the oil recovery differences by material between the existing oil skimmer disk and several discs which oil adhesion are possible. The experiment results in this study are summarized as follows: In all the disks, the mass of recovery of bunker-A oil was greater than light oil. In light oil, there was nearly no differences in the mass of oil recovery by disk material, but in the case of bunker A oil, recovery efficiency showed big differences depending on the disk materials. For light oil, the differences in the mass of oil recovery per unit of operation time from the initial time zone were hardly shown. However, the mass of recovery of bunker-A oil linearly increased from the initial operation time in all the disks and the increase shaped a slow moving trend as time went on; therefore, the mass of oil recovery per unit of operation time showed differences depending on time. This result shows that oil viscosity has an effect on the disk recovery efficiency. When comparing the mass of pure oil recovery and the mass of water recovery in the total mass of recovery by bunker-A oil, there was no difference in the mass of oil recovery between the window-aluminum material disk and the disks consisting of other materials, but the mass of water recovery of the former was relatively very small. This shows the most ideal result in view of oil recovery efficiency that considers the mass of water recovery. In conclusion, it was found that aluminum is the most advantageous as the material for tank lorry oil skimmer disk.
Oil spill accidents can cause various environmental issues, so it is important to quickly assess the extent and changes in the area and location of the spilled oil. In the case of oil spill detection using satellite imagery, it is possible to detect a wide range of oil spill areas by utilizing the information collected from various sensors equipped on the satellite. Previous studies have analyzed the reflectance of oil at specific wavelengths and have developed an oil spill index using bands within the specific wavelength ranges. When analyzing multiple images before and after an oil spill for monitoring purposes, a significant amount of time and computing resources are consumed due to the large volume of data. By utilizing Google Earth Engine, which allows for the analysis of large volumes of satellite imagery through a web browser, it is possible to efficiently detect oil spills. In this study, we evaluated the applicability of four types of oil spill indices in the area of various land cover using Sentinel-2 MultiSpectral Instrument data and the cloud-based Google Earth Engine platform. We assessed the separability of oil spill areas by comparing the index values for different land covers. The results of this study demonstrated the efficient utilization of Google Earth Engine in oil spill detection research and indicated that the use of oil spill index B ((B3+B4)/B2) and oil spill index C (R: B3/B2, G: (B3+B4)/B2, B: (B6+B7)/B5) can contribute to effective oil spill monitoring in other regions with complex land covers.

The joint sealants used in the airside should resist the high temperature of the jet blast and the jet fuel oil spilled when the aircraft is maintained and filled. The material of joint sealant for the airside should be different from that for the road due to these characteristics. Three different kinds of the joint sealant materials were tested in this paper. The materials include the polysulfide, the polyurethane and the silicon. The test results show that the physical properties and the performance of the polysulfide show the high resistance to the jet blast and the jet fuel oil. When the characteristics of the airside considered, the polysulfide may apply in the both of the runway and the apron area, the polyuretane can be applied the taxiway. The use of the silicon sealant is not recommended for the airside.

It was known that crude oil can be mainly divided into saturates, aromatics, resins, and asphaltenes. If microbial biodegradation of asphaltenes is effectively viable, additional oil production will be expected from depleted oil reservoir. Meanwhile, biodegradation can be applied to other aspects, such as the bioremediation of spilled oil. In this case, the biodegradation of asphaltenes also plays an important role. It has been already reported that asphaltenes are decomposed by bacterial consortia. However, the biodegradation mechanism of asphaltenes has not been clearly presented. The major reason is that the molecular structure of asphaltenes is complicated and is mainly in a aggregated form. In this paper, it was presumed that the biodegradation process of asphaltenes may follow the microbial oxidation mechanism of saturates and aromatics which are easier biodegradable than asphaltenes among the crude oil components. In other words, the biodegradation process was explained by serial stages; the contact between asphaltenes and bacteria in the presence of biosurfactants, and the decomposition of alkyl groups and fused-rings within the asphaltene structure.

When persistent oil, such as crude oil or Bunker C oil, is spilled at sea, viscosity increases through the weathering process. Equipment that can collect this oil when mixed with floating marine debris is very limited. In this study, devices that can be attached to the outside of existing oil skimmers have been applied to the inside of the main body, to develop an unmanned conveyor belt type floating marine debris and high viscosity oil recovery skimmer, which is composed of a conveyor belt, a sweeper with a forced inflow device, and a collection tank equipped with a buoyant body. The resulting skimmer was operated at a speed of 1.2 knots at a distance of 30 m in a sea area test. It was stable when moving laterally in any direction. An oil recovery performance test was conducted using a portable storage tank, and oil was recovered from a minimum of $7.8k{\ell}/h$ to a maximum of $23.3k{\ell}/h$. Moreover, recovery of $7.7k{\ell}/h$ was obtained in a wave water tank test with floating marine debris such as PET bottles and oil mixed. If the equipment developed in this study was used in the field for oil pollution accidents, it could be expected to contribute to improved response capability. We believe our equipment could be used in further studies to improvement the performance of existing portable oil skimmers.

Oil spills cause a lot of damage to the environment. Oil destroys the water environment and ecosystem in a very short period of time once they are contaminated by it, it takes a lot of time to recover from the contamination and the cleaning process is very difficult. Therefore, oil detectors are greatly needed as they can monitor any oil spills over the sea, rivers, and lakes. There are two kinds of technology available for detecting oil, viz. the contact and non-contact types. The former is based on the use of the conductivity, capacitance and microwaves, while the latter employs infrared, UV, laser, optic and radar technologies. As there are also various hurdles in the measuring of oil on water, such as the presence of waves, refraction of light, temperature and saltiness, it is imperative to select the right oil detector which is appropriate for the specific environment. In this study, a contact type oil detector is developed, which can be used in oil related industries, such as refineries, petrochemical companies, and power generation stations. The detector is made up of the sensor module, which floats on the water, and the controller which processes the signal coming from the sensor module and displays it. It is designed in such a way that the existence of oil is detected through the sensor and the change in the permittivity is observed to determine the volume and type of spilled oil.
As we can see at the oil spill occident on the coast of Taean, the viscosity of the spilled oil becomes thicker as time goes by. It becomes waste oil with the form of tar. It moves to other areas following a tide. When the temperature of the water goes up, the viscosity becomes lighter and forms oil film. It repeats the process spreading to and polluting extensive areas where the tide reaches. People have used hand nets to collect waste oil of tar at the sea. But it is very difficult for them to collect the tar type waste oil spread on large areas before it reaches to the beach. This paper tried to find a way to collect the tar type waste oil efficiently. It used absorption mat of boom type that uses the attachment characteristics of the tar type waste oil and floating waste recovery device of net type. It tested the possibility of using the devices at the oil spill accident on the beach of Taean. The result showed that net type recovery device was much more efficient in collecting the waste oil in short time than the hand net system of people. It confirmed that the net type recovery device could be used to collect tar type waste oil.

An exothermic oil absorbent sheet with calcium chloride crystals can be fabricated, by dipping a clean polypropylene fabric in calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid solution and drying it. The exothermic oil absorbent sheet applied to the seawater surface, releases heat by the dissociation of calcium chloride. The dissociation heat liquefies the solidified low-sulfur fuel oil at a low temperature, and converts it to a state at which it can be absorbed. The optimum mole concentrations of calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid required for the exothermic oil absorbent sheet, are 0.25 M and 0.5 M, respectively. The oil absorption capacity of the exothermic oil absorbent sheet for low sulfur fuel oil depends on the seawater temperature. But, it is highly excellent at 4.5-7.08 g/g at 10℃, the average seawater temperature during the winter in Korea. The exothermic oil absorbent sheet is an excellent alternative in absorbing low-sulfur fuel oil in winter and removing it from seawater.
