An electric motor is the one of the most important parts in robot systems, which mainly drives the wheel of mobile robots or the joint of manipulators. According to the requirement of motor performance, the controller type and parameters vary. For the wheel driving motors, a speed tracking controller is used, while a position tracking controller is required for the joint driving motors. Moreover, if the mechanical parameters are changed or a different motor is used, we might have to tune again the controller parameters. However, for the beginners who are not familiar about the controller design, it is hard to design pertinently. In this paper, we develop a nominal robust controller model for the velocity tracking of wheel driving motors and the position tracking of joint driving motors based on the disturbance observer (DOB) which can reject disturbances, modeling errors, and dynamic parameter variations, and propose the methodology for the determining the least control parameters. The proposed control system enables the beginners to easily construct a controller for the newly designed robot system. The purpose of this paper is not to develop a new controller theory, but to increase the user-friendliness. Finally, simulation and experimental verification have performed through the actual wheel and joint driving motors.

In this paper, a sliding mode controller which is characterized by high accuracy, fast response and robustness is applied to speed control of AC-SERVO motor. The control input is changed to the continuous one in the boundary layer to reduce the chattering phenomenon, and the boundary layer converges to zero when the state variables of system reach to steady state values. The integral compensator is added to reduce steady state error and to provide the continuous torque reference. The acceleration which is necessary for the sliding plane is estimated by an obsever. Sliding surface is included in control input to enhance the robustness and transient response without increasing sliding mode controller gain. The proposed controller is implemented by DSP(digital signal processor). The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated through experimental works.
In a conventional speed sensorless Stator Flux Oriented(SFO) induction machine drive system, the estimated speed is delayed in transients by the use of a low pass filter(LPF). To prevent extreme overshoot caused by this delay, PI controller gains should be small, which consequently is greatly affected by disturbance torque. In this paper, by taking advantage of disturbance torque observer and feedforward control, robust speed controller is designed for speed sensorless SFO system. The proposed method is verified by the simulation results.
Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is receiving increased attention for servo drive applications in recent years because of its high torque to inertia ratio, superior power density and high efficiency. Vector-controlled PMSM has the same operating characteristics as separately excited dc motor. The drive system of servo motor is requested to have an accurate response for the speed reference and a quick recovery for the disturbance such as load torque. However the dynamics of PMSM drive change greately by parameter variations. Morever, when the unkown and inaccessible disturbances are imposed on PMSM, the drive system is given a significant effect by them. As a result, the drive system with both a fast drive performance and a reduced sensitivity to parameter variations is requested. In this paper, the robust control system of PMSM with torque feedforward using load torque observer is presented. In the proposed system, load torque is estimated by the reduced order observer, and the robust control system against load torque variation is realized using the torque feedforward. Moreover, the design of speed controller with the torque observer is discussed. Simulation results show that the proposed method is effective for suppression of parameter variations and load disturbance.
We propose a torque and pitch control scheme for variable speed wind turbines with permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). A torque controller is designed to maximize the power below the rated wind speed and a pitch controller is designed to regulate the output power above the rated wind speed. The controllers exploit the sliding mode control scheme considering the variation of wind speed. Since the aerodynamic torque and rotor acceleration are difficult to measure in practice, a finite time convergent observer is designed which estimates them. In order to verify the proposed control strategy, we present stability analysis as well as simulation results.

In this paper, improvement method of control performance by a full-order observer using reduced-order state equation is proposed in the low speed range. Full-order observer using reduced-order state equation is the motor speed and the disturbance torque observer. The proposed algorithm is very stable in the low speed range about 1.9[rpm]. The disturbance torque in the motor drive system degrades speed control performance in the low speed range. The proposed algorithm estimated both motor speed and disturbance torque. The estimated disturbance torque is used as a feedforward value in output of the speed controller, As a result, it improves the response of load torque in the low speed range(1.9rpm).
This paper presents an implementation of digital position control system for an induction motor vector drives by a direct torque control(DTC) using the 16bit DSP TMS320 F240. The DSP controller enable enhanced real time algorithm and cost-effective design of intelligent controller for motors which can be yield enhanced operation, fewer system components, lower system cost, increased efficiency and high performance. The system presented are stator flux and torque observer using current model that inputs are current sensing of motor terminal and rotor angle for a low speed operating area, two hysteresis controller, optimal switching look-up table, and IGBT voltage source inverter by fully integrated control software. The developed control system are shown a good motion control response characteristic results and high performance features using 2.2Kw general purposed induction motor.
In this paper, we propose an adaptive sliding mode observer-based control of induction motors with uncertainties. The proposed adaptive sliding mode flux observer generates estimates both for the unknown parameters(load torque and rotor resistance) and for the unmeasured state variable (rotor fluxes); they converge to the corresponding true value under persistency of excitation which actually holds in typical operating conditions. The proposed controller guarantees speed tracking and bounded signals for every initial condition of the motor. Simulations show that all estimation errors tend quickly to zero so that high tracking performances are achieved both for speed and rotor flux.
In this paper, a robust adaptive backstepping control is developed for efficiency optimization of induction motors with uncertainties. The proposed control scheme consists of efficiency flux control(EFC) using a sliding mode adaptive flux observer and robust speed control(RSC) using a function approximation for mechanical uncertainties. In EFC, it is important to find the flux reference to minimize power losses of induction motors. Therefore, we proposed the optimal flux reference using the electrical power loss function. The sliding mode flux observer is designed to estimate rotor fluxes and variation of inverse rotor time constant. In RSC, the unknown function approximation technique employs nonlinear disturbance observer(NDO) using fuzzy neural networks(FNNs). The proposed controller guarantees both speed tracking and flux tracking. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the approaches proposed.
Stator core loss has significant adverse effects when an induction motor is controlled by the conventional vector control method. Therefore, taking core toss into account should make it possible to control the torque very precisely. This paper proposes a speed sensorless vector control method for an induction motor at optimum efficiency and high response taking core loss account. The proposed vector control system consists of a speed adaptive rotor flux observer which takes core loss into account and employs a direct vector control which compensates for the influence of core loss. Also, in this paper, a vector controlled induction motor with a deadbeat rotor flux controller is developed. The method ensures optimum efficiency in the steady state without degradation of the dynamic response. The validity of the proposed technique is confirmed by simulation results for induction motor drive system.
