When two speakers read a text together, the produced speech has been shown to reduce a high degree of variability (e.g., pause duration and placement, and speech rate). This paper provides a quantitative analysis of speech rate variation exhibited in synchronous speech by examining the global and local patterns in two dialects of Mandarin Chinese (Taiwan and Shanghai). We analyzed the speech data in terms of mean speech rate and the reference of "Just Noticeable difference (JND)" within a subject and across subjects. Our findings show that speakers show lower and less variable speech rates when they read a text synchronously than when they read alone. This global pattern is observed consistently across speakers and dialects maintaining the unique local variation patterns of speech rate for each dialect. We conclude that paired speakers lower their speech rates and decrease the variability in order to ensure the synchrony of their speech.

This study investigated the rhythmic accommodation of Korean English learners' interlanguage talk. Twelve Korean speakers, 6 native English speakers and 6 non-native English speakers in London participated in multiple conversations on different topics which produced 36 conversational data in interlanguage talk (ILT) settings. 190 utterances from the 36 conversational data were analyzed to investigate the rhythmic patterns of Korean English learners when they communicated with English speakers with different language backgrounds. Save for the final-syllable, the normalized duration of consecutive syllables was compared in order to derive a variability index (VI). It was found that there was no significant variability in the measurement of the syllable-to-syllable duration for the utterances of Korean English learners, regardless of their interlocutor's language background. Conversely, it was found that there was evidence that Korean English learners showed rhythmic accommodation in ILT when they conversed with non-native English speakers. The speaking rate became significantly slower when Korean English learners talked to non-native English speakers, than when they talked to other Korean English learners. Furthermore, there was a negative correlation between speaking rate and the VI in the utterances of Korean English learners in ILT.

Development of ICT technologies leads exponential growth of various sharing economy over the last couple of years. The intuitive advantage of the sharing economy is efficient utilization of idle goods and services, but there are safety and security concerns. In this paper, we propose a onetime password based access control system to support secure accommodation sharing service and show the implementation results. To provide a secure service to both the provider and the user, the proposed system issues a onetime access password that is valid only during the sharing period reserved by the user, thereafter access returns to the accommodation owner. Especially, our system provides secure user access by merging the two elements of speaker recognition using voice and a one-time password to open and close the door lock. In this paper, we propose a secure system for accommodation sharing services as a use-case, but the proposed system can be applicable to various sharing services utilizing security-sensitive facilities.

Jenkins (2000, 2007) suggested lingua franca core (LFC) of English as an international language (EIL) context. According to her, intelligibility of English pronunciation of L2 English speakers and English learners is more important than pronunciation accuracy in English communication. Her suggestion has been widely accepted in Korean classroom situations, so the systematic teaching of English pronunciation has been rarely emphasized. In this paper it is argued that the LFC of English is widely misinterpreted in Korea while some of her suggestions themselves are also misleading. This paper tries to redefine Jenkins' LFC and provide suggestions for teaching LFC in Korea.

A series of experiments was carried out while using totally six female subjects in order to evaluate their psycho-physilolgical variations during their work with VDT both subjectively and objectively compared to those of ordinary office type work and speech communication type work. The results led by the experiment were as follows; the effects with data input work on the subjects from the view point of psychological load was larger than those with the ordinary office work. Oral communication between subjects gave the positive effects upon each subjects to reduce their psychological and mental burden.

Recently, importance of working environment is increased in commercial vessel and offshore structure. Marine facility design and ambient environment condition are influenced to enhancing human performance and reducing human errors. Consequently, the quality of accommodation where offshore facility crews sleep, eat and relax will influence their job performance and overall sense of comport and well-being. Therefore, adequate acoustic isolation between adjacent spaces is normally required to achieve satisfactory internal noise levels, acoustic privacy and speech intelligibility. In this study, the reverberation time is investigated in the public areas where there are not provided the information of material's noise reduction coefficient (NRC). The experiment of reverberation time is rarely performed for the various type public areas in a marine structure. Therefore, the reverberation time in a vessel is investigate in order to evaluate the room's noise reduction coefficient (NRC) in a public area.

현재의 웹정보들은 주로 HTML로 기술되어 있으며, 이러한 정보를 얻기 위해 사용자들은 마우스와 키보드와 같은 입력장치를 사용한다. 이와 같이 기존의 GUI 환경은 인간의 가장 자연스러운 정보획득 수단의 하나인 음성을 지원하지 못하고 있다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해 음성 인터페이스를 가진 여러 제품들이 개발되고 있다. 하지만 이들은 상호대화성이나 기존 웹환경을 수용한다는 측면에서 부족한 면을 가지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 현재 무르익어 가는 음성인식 기술과 XML의 파생언어인 VoiceXML을 이용하여, 기존의 인터페이스 환경을 XML 기반의 대화형 음성인터페이스 환경으로 대체하고자 한다. 이를 통해 기존의 인터페이스 환경을 수용한 VUI(Voice User Interface) 환경을 사용자에게 제공할 수 있다. 기존의 환경을 수용하기 위해 "XML Island" 기술을 이용하여 VoiceXML 문서를 HTML 문서에 포함시키며, 대표적인 정보획득화면인 메뉴, 게시판, 검색 엔진에 대한 대화형 음성 시나리오를 제안하고 있다.
