  • Magnetic properties are investigated for top- and bottom-type spin valves of Si/SiO$_2$/NiO(60nm)/Co(2.5nm)/Cu(1.95nm)/Co(4.5nm)/NOL(t nm; Nano Oxide layer). The MR ratios of the bottom-type spin valves with NOL are larger than those of the top-type spin valves. However, the enhancement of the former is lower than the latter. Both of spin-valves also showed almost constant Ap and smaller p. Enhanced MR ratios of spin valves with NOL result mainly from small values of with constant Ap which due to specular diffusive electron scattering at NOL(NiO)/metal interfaces.

  • In this study, an efficient removal algorithm for specular reflections in a tooth color image is proposed to minimize the artefact interrupting color image segmentation. The pixel values of RGB color channels are initially reversed to emphasize the features in reflective regions, and then those regions are automatically detected by utilizing perceptron artificial neural network model and those prominent intensities are corrected by applying a smoothing spatial filter. After correcting specular reflection regions, multiple seeds in the tooth candidates are selected to find the regional minima and MCWA(Marker-Controlled Watershed Algorithm) is applied to delineate the individual tooth region in a CCD tooth color image. Therefore, the accuracy in segmentation for separating tooth regions can be drastically improved with removing specular reflections due to the illumination effect.

  • This paper describes a method of building the probability grid map for an autonomous mobile robot using the ultrasonic DAF(data association filter). The DAF, which evaluates the association of each data with the rest and removes the data affected by the specular reflection effect, can improve the reliability of the data for the Probability grid map. This method is based on the evaluation of possibility that the acquired data are all from the same object. Namely, the data from specular reflection have very few possibilities of detecting the same object, so that they are excluded from the data cluster during the process of the DAF. Therefore, the uncertain data corrupted by the specular reflection and/or multi-path effect, are not used to update the probability map, and hence building a good quality of a grid map is possible even in a specular environment. In order to verify the effectiveness of the DAF, it was applied to the Bayesian model and the orientation probability model which are the typical ones of a grid map. We demonstrate the experimental results using a real mobile robot in the real world.

  • Isotactic polypropylene (PP) surfaces were modified with argon and oxygen plasmas using a radiofrequency (RF) glow discharge at 240 mTorr and 40 W. The changes in topography and surface structure were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) in conjunction with specular reflectance of infrared (IR) microspectroscopy. Under our operating conditions, the AFM image analysis revealed that longer plasma treatment resulted in significant ablation on the PP surface, regardless of the kind of plasma employed, but the topography was dependent on the nature of the gases. Specular reflectance IR spectroscopic analysis indicated that the constant removal of surface material was an important ablative aspect when using either plasma, but the nature of the ablative behavior and the resultant aging effects were clearly dependent on the choice of plasma. The use of argon plasma resulted in a negligible aging effect; in contrast, the use of oxygen plasma caused a noticeable aging effect, which was due to reactions of trapped or isolated radicals with oxygen in air, and was partly responsible for the increased surface area caused by ablation. The use of oxygen plasma is believed to be an advantageous approach to modifying polymeric materials with functionalized surfaces, e.g., for surface grafting of unsaturated monomers and incorporating oxygen-containing groups onto PP.

  • For the single crystal growth of silicon, a global analysis of heat transfer in a CZ furnace was carried out using the finite element method, where the radiative heat transfer between the surfaces that possess both specular and/or diffuse reflectance components was taken into account, and then the effect of the specular reflection of the crystal and/or melt on the CZ crystal growth was numerically investigated.

  • To reach 100 Gbit/in$^2$ magnetic recording densities in hard disk drives specular enhancement of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect in spin valve (SV) films has become one of the indispensable means for application as read elements in recording heads [1]. More recently specular spin valve (SSV) structure containing nano-oxides layers (NOL) were reported [2], where MR enhancement is caused to extended mean free path of majority spin polarized electrons through specular reflection at metal/insulator interfaces [3] in the SV films. • Numerous investigations have demonstrated that diffused reflection is one of the most important factors in predicting room acoustics by computer simulation. Recent studies have suggested several computational algorithms in order to account for diffused reflections in the ray tracing or beam tracing method. In this study, a computational algorithm for the calculation of diffuse sound reflections in the image method is suggested and a computer simulation system is developed based on the suggested algorithm. The methodology adopted in our computer simulation system is similar to the extended radiosity method, which is developed for the computer graphics. In a real room, sound energy is reflected in a partially diffused manner which results in four reflection combinations: diffuse-diffuse, specular-specular, diffuse-specular and specular-diffuse. In this study, higher order form factor is introduced to handle the four types of reflection combinations so that the partially diffused reflection could be modeled. In this paper, the concept of extended radiosity method is described and the approximate method of calculating higher order form factor is suggested. Finally, the effect of higher order form factors on the simulation of reverberation time is investigated.
