Previous screening of novel antibacterial agents revealed that some bacterial isolates exhibited antibiotic activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and that they showed antibacterial activity, even against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Among these isolates, one bacterial strain, BCNU 1204, was identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa using phenetic and phylogenetic analysis, based on 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequences. The maximum productivities of antimicrobial substances of BCNU 1204 were obtained after being cultured at $35^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.0 for 4 d in King's medium B (KMB). Dichloromethane (DCM) and ethylacetate (EA) extracts of P. aeruginosa BCNU 1204 exhibited strong antimicrobial activity, particularly against gram-positive bacteria. The EA extracts exhibited broad-spectrum activity against antibiotic resistant strains. Fraction 5-2, was obtained by recycling preparative liquid chromatography (LC) and preparative thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and was identified as phenazine-1-carboxylic acid belonging to phenazines using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Its minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were $25{\mu}g/ml$, $50{\mu}g/ml$, ${\geq}25{\mu}g/ml$, and ${\geq}50{\mu}g/ml$ for MRSA CCARM 3089, 3090, 3091, and 3095 strains, respectively. P. aeruginosa BCNU 1204 may be a potential resource for the development of anti-MRSA antibiotics. Additional research is required to identify the active substance from P. aeruginosa BCNU 1204.

In this study, carbon fibers were fabricated via carbonization of oxidized polyacrylonitrile (oxi-PAN) under different carbonization conditions. Carbonization of oxi-PAN fiber was performed under four different temperature (1300, 1400, 1500, $1600^{\circ}C$) with four different fiber tensions (14, 25, 35, 45 MPa). Effect of carbonization process on the structural development and mechanical properties of carbon fiber were characterized by single filament fiber tensile test and Raman spectroscopy. A clear correlation exists between the Raman spectrum and the tensile modulus of carbon fiber and effect of carbonization temperature on the tensile modulus showed increased tendency only at higher fiber tension (${\geq}25MPa$) while tensile strength showed decreased or random tendency. Therefore, it may be concluded that the optimization of carbonization temperature of oxi-PAN fiber also requires optimization of fiber tension.
This study derives the relative cross-section for the natW(p,xn)176Re nuclear reaction by measuring the gamma rays generated from the nuclear reaction with natural tungsten using a 100 MeV linear accelerator of the Korea Multi-purpose Accelerator Complex in the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. In general, research on isotopes with a short half-life always shows a tendency that the intensity of radioactivity decreases rapidly within a short period of time, making it very difficult to measure itself. In particular, 176Re is one of the relatively short radionuclides with a half-life of 5.3 minutes. In this study, 109.08 keV gamma rays generated from the 176Re isotope having such a short half-life were measured using a high-purity Ge detector(HPGe detector). The obtained relative measurements were the results in the 8 to 14 MeV proton energy domain published by Richard G. in 1967, and the TENDL-2019 value, which was the result of A. J. Koning in 2019, which evaluated the nuclear reaction cross-section by calculation based on this comparative analysis was performed. The results of this study are expected to be usefully applied to the design of nuclear fusion reactor which is known as future energy sources, elements ratio for the nuclear synthesis of astrophysics.
Pure and Sm ion doped BiVO4 catalysts were synthesized using a conventional hydrothermal method and characterized by XRD, DRS, SEM, and PL. We also examined the activity of these materials on the photocatalytic decomposition of rhodamine B under visible light irradiation. The doping of Sm ion into BiVO4 catalyst changed the ms-BiVO4 crystal structure into the tz-BiVO4 crystal structure in the low synthesis temperature. Light absorption analysis using DRS showed that all the catalysts displayed strong absorption in the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum regardless of Sm ion doping. In addition, an amorphous morphology was shown in the pure BiVO4 catalyst, but the morphology of the BiVO4 catalyst doped with Sm ion was changed into an ellipse shape and also the particle size decreased. In the photocatalytic decomposition of rhodamine B, Sm ion doped BiVO4 catalyst showed higher photocatalytic activity than the pure BiVO4 catalyst. In addition, the Sm3-BVO catalyst doped with 3% Sm ion showed the highest photocatalytic activity, as well as the highest formation rate of OH radicals (•OH) and the highest PL peak. This result suggests that the formation rate of OH radicals produced in the interface between the photocatalyst and water is well correlated with the photocatalytic activity.

Background: Reactor pressure vessel (RV) with internals (RVI) are activated structures by neutron irradiation and volume contaminated wastes. Thus, to develop safe and optimized disposal plan for them at a disposal site, it is important to perform exact activation calculation and evaluate the dose rate on the surface of casks which contain cut-off pieces. Materials and Methods: RV and RVI are subjected to neutron activation calculation via Monte Carlo methodology with MCNP6 and ORIGEN-S program-neutron flux, isotopic specific activity, and gamma spectrum calculation on each component of RV and RVI, and dose rate evaluation with MCNP6. Results and Discussion: Through neutron activation analysis, dose rate is evaluated for the casks containing cut-off pieces produced from decommissioned RV and RVI. For RV cut-off ones, the highest value of dose rate on the surface of cask is 6.97 × 10-1 mSv/hr and 2 m from it is 3.03 × 10-2 mSv/hr. For RVI cut-off ones, on the surface of it is 0.166 × 10-1 mSv/hr and 2 m from it is 1.04 × 10-1 mSv/hr. Dose rates for various RV and RVI cut-off pieces distributed lower than the limit except the one of 2 m from the cask surface of RVI. It needs to adjust contents in cask which carries highly radioactive components in order to decrease thickness of cask. Conclusion: Two types of casks are considered in this paper: box type for very-low-level waste (VLLW) as well as low-level waste (LLW) and cylinder type for intermediate-level waste (ILW). The results will contribute to the development of optimal loading plans for RV and RVI cut-off pieces during the decommissioning of nuclear power plant that can be used to prepare radioactive waste disposal plans for the different types of wastes-ILW, LLW, and VLLW.
Succinic acid ester derivatives have been used as additives for the base oil of metal working fluids and pressure working oils. In this paper, a series of succinic acid alkyl half-esters were synthesized with over 97% yields by ring-opening reaction of succinic anhydride and fatty alcohol and were soluble in 100 N base oil within 1 wt% concentration. The structures and purities of ester derivatives were confirmed by $^1H-NMR$ and FT-IR spectrum and GC analysis. Anti-corrosion properties of the esters in sea water were evaluated through ASTM D665 method and weight loss method and compared to that of succinic alkyl esters without carboxylic acid group in the molecule. As the results, anti-corrosion properties of succinic acid alkyl half-esters with carboxylic acid group were better than those of succinic acid alkyl esters without carboxylic acid group. And, Anti-corrosion properties of the esters with a shorter alkyl chain of high concentration showed better performance than those with longer alkyl chain of low concentration. Inhibition efficiency % (IE%) of the esters was over 95% in the concentration of 80 ppm and corrosion rate (CR) was below 0.3 mm/year at the same concentration. Thus, the corrosion properties of succinic acid alkyl half-esters result from the carboxylic acid groups in molecules.
Objectives: Dental plaque emits red fluorescence under a visible blue light near the ultra-violet end of the light spectrum. The fluorescence characteristics of each microorganism have been reported in several studies. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in red fluorescence of oral microorganisms that is affected by blood in the culture media. Methods: The gram-positive Actinomyces naeslundii (AN, KCTC 5525) and Lactobacillus casei (LC, KCTC 3109) and gram negative Prevotella intermedia (PI, KCTC 3692) that are known to emit red fluorescence were used in this study. Each bacterium was activated in broth and cultivated in different agar media at $37^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. Tryptic soy agar with hemin and vitamin $K_3$ (TSA), TSA with sheep blood (TSAB), basal medium mucin (BMM) medium, and BMM with sheep blood (BMMB) were used in this study. Fluorescence due to bacterial growth was observed under 405-nm wavelength blue light using the quantitative light-induced fluorescence-digital (QLF-D) device. The red, green, and blue fluorescence values of colonies were obtained using image-analysis software and the red to green ratio (R/G value) and red to total RGB ratio (R/RGB value) were calculated for quantitative comparison. Results: The QLF-D images of the AN, LC, and PI colonies showed red fluorescence in all media, but the fluorescence of all bacteria was reduced in TSA and BMM media, compared with in TSAB and BMMB media. Both the R/G and the R/RGB values of all bacteria were significantly reduced in growth media without blood (P<0.001). Conclusions: Based on this in vitro study, it can be concluded that red fluorescence of oral bacteria can be affected by growth components, especially blood. Blood-containing medium could be a significant factor influencing red fluorescence of oral bacteria. It can be further hypothesized that bleeding in the oral cavity can increase the red fluorescence of dental plaque.

In this study, a numerical methodology is proposed for evaluating valve flow noise in a pipe conveying high pressure gas, and the effects of perforated plates on reduction of such valve flow noise are quantitatively analyzed. First, high-accurate unsteady compressible Large Eddy Simulation techniques are utilized to predict flow and flow noise by a valve in a high-pressure pipe. The validity of the numerical result is confirmed by comparing the predicted wall pressure spectrum with the measured one. Next, the acoustic power of downstream-propagating acoustic waves due to the valve flow is analyzed using an acoustic power formula for acoustic waves propagating on mean flow in a pipe. Based on the analysis results, perforated plates are designed and installed downstream of the valve to suppress the valve flow noise and the acoustic power of downstream-going acoustic waves is predicted by using the same numerical procedure. The reduction by 9.5 dB is confirmed by comparing the predicted result with that of the existing system. Based on these results, the current numerical methodology is expected to be used to reduce valve flow noise in an existing system as well as in a design stage.
Using passive electric field sensor which operates in non-contact mode, we can measure the electric potential induced from the change of electric charges on a sensor caused by the movement of human body or hands. In this study, we propose a new method, which utilizes PLN induced to the sensor around the moving object, to detect one's hand movement and extract gesture frames from the detected signals. Signals from the EPS sensors include a large amount of power line noise usually existing in the places such as rooms or buildings. Using the fact that the PLN is shielded in part by human access to the sensor, signals caused by motion or hand movement are detected. PLN consists mainly of signals with frequency of 60 Hz and its harmonics. In our proposed method, signals only 120 Hz component in frequency domain are chosen selectively and exclusively utilized for detection of hand movement. We use FFT to measure a spectral-separated frequency signal. The signals obtained from sensors in this way are continued to be compared with the threshold preset in advance. Once motion signals are detected passing throng the threshold, we determine the motion frame based on period between the first threshold passing time and the last one. The motion detection rate of our proposed method was about 90% while the correct frame extraction rate was about 85%. The method like our method, which use PLN signal in order to extract useful data about motion movement from non-contact mode EPS sensors, has been rarely reported or published in recent. This research results can be expected to be useful especially in circumstance of having surrounding PLN.

Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) is routinely used for the determination of nutrient components of forages. However, little is known about the impact of sample preparation and wavelength on the accuracy of the calibration to predict minerals. This study was conducted to assess the effect of sample preparation and wavelength of near infrared spectrum for the improvement of calibration and prediction accuracy of Calcium (Ca) and Phosphorus (P) in imported hay using NIRS. The samples were scanned in reflectance in a monochromator instrument (680-2,500 nm). Calibration models (n = 126) were developed using partial least squares regression (PLS) based on cross-validation. The optimum calibrations were selected based on the highest coefficients of determination in cross validation (R2) and the lowest standard error of cross-validation (SECV). The highest R2 and the lowest SECV were obtained using oven-dry grinded sample preparation and 1,100-2,500 nm wavelength. The calibration (R2) and SECV were 0.99 (SECV: 468.6) for Ca and 0.91 (SECV: 224.7) for P in mg/kg DM on a dry weight, respectively. Results of this experiment showed the possibility of NIRS method to predict mineral (Ca and P) concentration of imported hay in Korea for routine analysis method to evaluate the feed value.
