Thermal conformational changes of human serum albumin (HSA) in phosphate buffer, 10 mM at pH = 7 are investigated using differential scanning calorimetric (DSC), circular dichroism (CD) and UV spectroscopic methods. The results indicate that temperature increment from $25^{\circ}C$ to $55^{\circ}C$ induces reversible conformational changes in the structure of HSA. Conformational change of HSA are shown to be a three-step process. Interestingly, melting temperature of the last domain is equal to the maximum value of fever in pathological conditions, i.e. $42^{\circ}C$. These conformational alterations are accompanied by a mild alteration of secondary structures. Study of HSA-SDS (sodium dodecyl sulphate) interaction at $45^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$ reveals that SDS affects the HSA structure at least in three steps: the first two steps result in more stabilization and compactness of HSA structure, while the last one induces the unfolding of HSA. Since HSA has a more affinity for SDS at $45^{\circ}C$ compared to $35^{\circ}C$, It is suggested that the net negative charge of HSA is decreased in fever, which results in the decrease of HSA-associated cations and plasma osmolarity, and consequently, heat removal via the increase in urine volume.

The characterization of aging of the pyrotechnic device is conducted thermally, chemically, and spectroscopically. The device is comprised of two parts: (i) igniter composed of Zr and (ii) pyrotechnic delay composed of ZrNi alloy. The thermally induced chemical reaction is identified through Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermogravimetry Analysis (TGA). The peak deconvolution of the themo-chemical data is used to estimate the enthalpy change of each metallic fuel component. Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) are used for chemical species analysis. The decomposition of oxidants by moisture significantly affected the fuel aging, and the formation of oxide film and metal oxide on the fuel surface gave rise to the thermal energy decrease.

Using both experimental and theoretical approaches, we have investigated the adsorption properties of an organic molecule (HATCN), which is used in OLEDs as an efficient hole injection layer, on metal and inert surfaces. We have also studied the structural and electronic properties of such interfaces and the dependences on deposition thickness. We have observed different trends in work function changes with different surfaces. Our photoelectron spectroscopic measurements have revealed an abnormal phenomenon in HATCN on a metal (Cu) surface: the work function decreases at lower coverage (~monolayer) of HATCN on a metal (Cu) surface, but it increases back and becomes higher than that of a bare Cu surface at higher coverage. It has, on the contrary, been observed that the work function of graphene surface just increases as the HATCN coverage increases. Our first-principles density functional calculations has not only verified our experimental observations, but also disclosed the underlying mechanism of such abnormal and different work function behaviors. We have found that the change in work function results from mutual polarization induced by the geometrical deformation and the bond dipole formed at the interface due to the charge redistribution. At low coverage of HAT-CN on Cu substrate, the former reduces the work function significantly by pulling down the vacuum level, while the latter tends to push up the vacuum level resulting in the work function increase.
High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) treatment can significantly change the color of diamonds. We studied the variation of the optical properties according to the nitrogen arrangement in natural brown diamonds of various types (type IaAB, type IaB, type IaA > B, type IaA < B, IaA = B) after HPHT treatment. The diamonds with different arrangements of nitrogen were annealed at temperatures in the range $1700-1800^{\circ}C$ under a stabilizing pressure of 5 GPa. HPHT treated samples were analyzed using UV-Vis-NIR, FT-IR, and PL spectroscopy. The absorption and luminescence spectra were measured to compare the variations of nitrogen arrangement in the natural brown diamonds before and after HPHT treatment. After HPHT treatment, the brown coloration in all types of diamonds was reduced and a decrease in the peaks related to the A-aggregate of nitrogen was more predominant than the B-aggregate. Furthermore, the peaks related to N3 (415.4 nm), H4 (496.4 nm), and platelet decreased and the peaks related to H3 (503.2 nm) and G-band increased after HPHT treatment. In conclusion, spectroscopic analysis of natural brown diamonds after HPHT treatment showed that a yellow color was produced by absorption in the H3 centers and a green color was generated by interaction between absorptions of the H3 and H2 centers.
Infrared (IR) spectroscopic techniques for the analysis of wood samples and the absorbance spectra of solid woods were presented. KBr pellets were prepared by throughly mixing approximately 300 mg of dried KBr and 1 mg of finely milled wood powder extracted with ethanol-cyclohexane previously. This mixture was made into a transparent disc by means of a pellet-making die (10 ton/$cm^2$ for 10 min). This IR techniques were applied for the analysis of archaeological wood samples. The most notable difference in the IR spectra between the recent and the archaeological waterlogged woods is that the absorption band centered at $1,730cm^{-1}$ was significantly diminished in the waterlogged ones. Total loss of absorption in $1,730cm^{-1}$ might be mainly due to the result of hemicellulose degradation. Another feature indicated by IR spectral comparision are that the degraded waterlogged wood samples showed 1) the increased intensity of the 1,600, 1,500 and $1,270cm^{-1}$ due to the residual lignin and the increased intensity at 1,470 and $1,425cm^{-1}$ due to the degradation of hemicellulose and 2) to the emergence of single band around $1,050cm^{-1}$ instead of three bands at 1,110, 1,060 and $1,040cm^{-1}$ in recent wood due to the degradation of cellulose crystalline. It was revealed from the IR examinations that the first change of wood in the waterlogged situation was the lysis of hemicellulose and the second the lysis of cellulose. It was also suggested that IR spectroscopy could serve a fast method for the investigation on the chemical characteristics of archaeological wood samples.

The effect of electron beam (EB) irradiation on the electrical properties of Zn-Sn-O (ZTO) thin films fabricated using a sol-gel process was investigated. As the EB dose increased, the saturation mobility of ZTO thin film transistors (TFTs) was found to slightly decrease, and the subthreshold swing and on/off ratio degenerated. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of the O 1s core level showed that the relative area of oxygen vacancies ($V_O$) increased from 10.35 to 12.56 % as the EB dose increased from 0 to $7.5{\times}10^{16}electrons/cm^2$. Also, spectroscopic ellipsometry analysis showed that the optical band gap varied from 3.53 to 3.96 eV with increasing EB dose. From the results of the electrical property and XPS analyses of the ZTO TFTs, it was found that the electrical characteristic of the ZTO thin films changed from semiconductor to conductor with increasing EB dose. It is thought that the electrical property change is due to the formation of defect sites like oxygen vacancies.
Photoelectrochemical performances of ZnO electrodes are enhanced by coupling with cobalt-based catalyst (CoPi) in phosphate electrolyte (pH 7). For this study, hexagonal pillar-shaped ZnO nanorods are grown on ZnO electrodes through a chemical bath deposition, onto which CoPi is deposited with different photodeposition times (10-30 min). A scanning electron microscopic study indicates that CoPi deposition does not induce any change of ZnO morphology and an energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopic analysis shows that inorganic phosphate ions (Pi) exist on ZnO surface. Bare ZnO electrodes generate the current of ca. $0.36mA/cm^2$ at a bias potential of 0.5 V vs. SCE, whereas ZnO/CoPi (deposited for 10 min) has ca. 50%-enhanced current ($0.54mW/cm^2$) under irradiation of AM 1.5G-light ($400mW/cm^2$). The excess loading of CoPi on ZnO results in decrease of photocurrents as compared to bare ZnO likely due to limited electrolyte access to ZnO and/or CoPi-mediated recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. The primary role of CoPi is speculated to trap the photogenerated holes and thereby oxidize water into molecular oxygen via an intervalency cycle among Co(II), Co(III), and Co(IV).

The reduction of [$Os_3(CO)_{11}P(OMe)_3$] and subsequent ionic coupling of the reduced species with $[Ru({\eta}^5-C_5H_5)(CH_3CN)_3]^+$ resulted in the formation of [$Os_3(CO)_{11}P(OMe)_3(Ru({\eta}^5-C_5H_5))_2$] which can be converted to spiked tetrahedral cluster, [$HOs_3(CO)_{11}P(OMe)_3Ru_2({\eta}^5-C_5H_5)(C_5H_4)$] via the intramolecular hydrogen transfer. Due to the unavailability of a suitable single crystal, the PW91/SDD and LDA/SDD density functional methods were used to predict possible structures and the available spectroscopic information (IR, NMR) of [$Os_3(CO)_{11}P(OMe)_3(Ru({\eta}^5-C_5H_5))_2$]. The most probable geometry found by constrained search is the isomer (a2) in which the phosphite, $P(OMe)_3$, occupies an axial position on one of the two osmium atoms that is edge bridged by the $Ru(CO)_2({\eta}^5-C_5H_5)$ unit. By using the most probably geometry, the predicted infrared frequencies and $^1H$, $^{13}C$ and $^{31}P$ NMR chemical shifts of the compound are in the same range as the experimental values. For this type of complex, the LDA/SDD method is appropriate for IR predictions whereas the OPBE/IGLO-II method is appropriate for NMR predictions. The activation energy and reaction energy of the intramolecular hydrogen transfer coupled with the structural change of the transition metal framework were estimated at the PW91/SDD level to be 110.32 and -0.14 kcal/mol respectively.
Two types of white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with different phosphor structures were fabricated and compared in terms of their optical characteristics. Their spectroscopic properties were analyzed as a function of temperature, from room temperature to $80^{\circ}C$. The temperature dependence of the luminance and the color coordinates showed that the decrease in luminance and change in the color coordinates of the remote-phosphor type LED were much smaller compared to the conventional white LED. These improvements were attributed to the decrease in phosphor temperature, due to the distance between the LED chip and the phosphor layer, as well as to the reduced absorption by the LED chip of the light emitted from the phosphor layer.
Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (Labiatae) has been extensively used in treatment of diarrhea, conjunctivitis, gastritis, enteritis and skin disease. As instructed in old description, the Scutellariae Radix should sometimes be processed before use. To 노디 light on the changes of chemical compositions by processing as well as processing method-activity relationships, Scutellariae Radix was heated at 16$0^{\circ}C$-20$0^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. in furnace or soaked with 20% EtOH (SPE) and boy's urine(SPU), respectively, which are one of processing methods and then heated at 17$0^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. To isolate the chemical components, Scutellariae Radix with/without processing were extracted with EtOH and EtOH extract was fractionated with ether, ethyl acetate and butanol to give respective fractions. Ether and EtOAc fractions obtained from the processed drug with urine (SPU) were subjected to chromatography to obtainsix components, oroxylin A, Wogonin, chrysin, baicalein, baicalein 7-O-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside and $\beta$-sitosterol 3-O-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside. All the isolated compounds were identified by means of physicochemical and spectroscopic methods (IR, $^1H-NMR,{\;}^13C-NMR$, Mass). By HPLC determination, the changes of the contents for each isolated components from SPE and SPU samples were observed. It was found that the content of nonglycosidic flavones such as oroxylin A, wogonin, chrysin and baicalein was increased markedly, whereas the content of baicalin and baicalein 7-O-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside was significantly decreased in both samples as compared with those of Scutellariae Radix. When the sample was soaked with boy's urine, the total amount of nonglycosidic flavones was higher than that of processing with 20% EtOH.
