Spectral behaviors of lasing from semiconductor square ring microcavities with structures for unidirectional laser oscillation were investigated. When a tapered structure was introduced, the lasing envelope shifted to a shorter wavelength region. Statistical estimate of the additional loss caused by the tapered structure was carried out by analyzing spectral data from many sets of cavities with various sizes. When a saw-edged structure was introduced, the unidirectional lasing functioned well but no apparent spectral shift was observed due to negligible additional loss.
The significance of spectral element method is that it can treat the mass and stiffness distribution exactly in contrast to the conventional finite element method, and therefore the dynamic behaviors within each spectral element can be obtained exactly. The present study provides the derivation of the spectral element of a curved beam, while the previous ones presented that of a straight structure. Further, in order to verify the derived spectral element, the natural frequencies of a ring by the spectral element method are compared with those by the analytical method and those by the FEM. From the verification, derived spectral element is admissible. And the dynamic behaviors of curved beam are simulated by using the derived spectral element of a curved beam.

In multi-view subspace clustering, how to integrate the complementary information between perspectives to construct a unified representation is a critical problem. In the existing works, the unified representation is usually constructed in the original data space. However, when the data representation in each view is very diverse, the unified representation derived directly in the original data domain may lead to a huge information loss. To address this issue, different to the existing works, inspired by the latest revelation that the data across all perspectives have a very similar or close spectral block structure, we try to construct the unified representation in the spectral embedding domain. In this way, the complementary information across all perspectives can be fused into a unified representation with little information loss, since the spectral block structure from all views shares high consistency. In addition, to capture the global structure of data on each view with high accuracy and robustness both, we propose a novel low-rank approximation via the tight lower bound on the rank function. Finally, experimental results prove that, the proposed method has the effectiveness and robustness at the same time, compared with the state-of-art approaches.

In this study, a spectral fatigue analysis was performed for the topside structure of an offshore floating vessel. The topside structure was idealized using beam elements in the SACS program. The fatigue analysis was carried out considering the wave and wind loads separately. For the wave-induced fatigue damage calculation, motion RAOs calculated from a direct wave load analysis and regular waves with different periods and unit wave heights were utilized. Then, the member end force transfer functions were generated covering all the loading conditions. Stress response transfer functions at each joint were produced using the specified SCFs and member end force transfer functions. fatigue damages were calculated using the obtained stress ranges, S-N curve, wave spectrum, heading probability of each loading condition, and their corresponding occurrences in the wave scatter diagrams. For the wind induced fatigue damage calculation, a dynamic wind spectral fatigue analysis was performed. First, a dynamic natural frequency analysis was performed to generate the structural dynamic characteristics, including the eigenvalues (natural frequencies), eigenvectors (mode shapes), and mass matrix. To adequately represent the dynamic characteristic of the structure, the number of modes was appropriately determined in the lateral direction. Second, a wind spectral fatigue analysis was performed using the mode shapes and mass data obtained from the previous results. In this analysis, the Weibull distribution of the wind speed occurrence, occurrence probability in each direction, damping coefficient, S-N curves, and SCF of each joint were defined and used. In particular, the wind fatigue damages were calculated under the assumption that the stress ranges followed a Rayleigh distribution. The total fatigue damages were calculated from the combination with wind and wave fatigue damages according to the DNV rule.
The influences of initial damage paths and aftershock (AS) spectral shape on the assessment of AS collapse fragility are investigated. To do this, a four-story ductile reinforced concrete (RC) frame structure is employed as the study case. The far-field earthquake records recommended by FEMA P695 are used as AS ground motions. The AS incremental dynamic analyses are performed for the damaged structure. To examine the effect of initial damage paths, a total of six kinds of initial damage paths are adopted to simulate different initial damage states of the structure by pushover analysis and dynamic analysis. For the pushover-based initial damage paths, the structure is "pushed" using either uniform or triangle lateral load pattern to a specified damage state quantified by the maximum inter-story drift ratio. Among the dynamic initial damage paths, one single mainshock ground motion or a suite of mainshock ground motions are used in the incremental dynamic analyses to generate a specified initial damage state to the structure. The results show that the structure collapse capacity is reduced as the increase of initial damage, and the initial damage paths show a significant effect on the calculated collapse capacities of the damaged structure (especially at severe damage states). To account for the effect of AS spectral shape, the AS collapse fragility can be adjusted at different target values of ${\varepsilon}$ by using the linear correlation model between the collapse capacity (in term of spectral intensity) and the AS ${\varepsilon}$ values, and coefficients of this linear model is found to be associated with the initial damage states.
Objective: Feed molecular structures can affect its availability to gastrointestinal enzymes which impact its digestibility and absorption. The molecular spectroscopy-attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared vibrational spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) is an advanced technique that measures the absorbance of chemical functional groups on the infrared region so that we can identify and quantify molecules and functional groups in a feed. The program aimed to reveal the association of intrinsic molecular structure with nutrient supply to animals from canola feedstocks and co-products from bio-oil processing. The objective of this study was to characterize special intrinsic carbohydrate and protein-related molecular structure spectral profiles of feedstock and co-products (meal and pellets) from bio-oil processing from two source origins: Canada (CA) and China (CH). Methods: The samples of feedstock and co-products were obtained from five different companies in each country arranged by the Canola Council of Canada (CCC). The molecular structure spectral features were analyzed using advanced vibrational molecular spectroscopy-ATR-FTIR. The spectral features that accessed included: i) protein-related spectral features (Amide I, Amide II, α-helix, β-sheet, and their spectral intensity ratios), ii) carbohydrate-related spectral features (TC1, TC2, TC3, TC4, CEC, STC1, STC2, STC3, STC4, TC, and their spectral intensity ratios). Results: The results showed that significant differences were observed on all vibrationally spectral features related to total carbohydrates, structural carbohydrates, and cellulosic compounds (p<0.05), except spectral features of TC2 and STC1 (p>0.05) of co-products, where CH meals presented higher peaks of these structures than CA. Similarly, it was for the carbohydrate-related molecular structure of canola seeds where the difference between CA and CH occurred except for STC3 height, CEC and STC areas (p>0.05). The protein-related molecular structures were similar for the canola seeds from both countries. However, CH meals presented higher peaks of amide I, α-helix, and β-sheet heights, α-helix:β-sheet ratio, total amide and amide I areas (p<0.05). Conclusion: The principal component analysis was able to explain over 90% of the variabilities in the carbohydrate and protein structures although it was not able to separate the samples from the two countries, indicating feedstock and coproducts interrelationship between CH and CA.
The Fourier Spectral Analysis has been widely utilized in the analysis of linear dynamic systems. However, it may not be generaly extended to analyze nonlinear systems. In this paper, a linear underlying dynamic structure coupled with nonlinear elements is analyzed by using newly derived equations of motion after the linear dynamic structure is characterized by the Fourier spectral analysis.

Finite element method(FEM) is one of the most popularly used method analyzing the dynamic behaviors of structures. But unless number of finite elements is large enough, the results from FEM some what different from exact analytical solutions, especially at high frequency range. On the other hand, as the spectral analysis method(SAM) deals directly with the governing equations of a structure, the results from this melthod cannot but be exact regardless of any frequency range. However, the SAM can be applied only to the case where a structure is subjected to the concentrated loads, despite a structure could be unddergone distributed loads more generally. In this paper, therefore, new spectral analysis algorithm is introduced through the spectral element method(SEM), so that it can be applied to anlystructures whether they are subjected to the concentrated loads or to the distributed loads. The results from this new SEM are compared with both the results from FEM and the exact analytical solutions. As expected, the results from new SEM algorithm are found to be almost identical to the exact analytical solutions while those from FEM are not agreed well with the exact analytical solutions as the mode number increases.

The singular value decomposition and the spectral decomposition are the useful methods in the area of matrix computation for multivariate techniques such as principal component analysis and multidimensional scaling. These techniques aim to find a simpler geometric structure for the data points. The singular value decomposition and the spectral decomposition are the methods being used in these techniques for this purpose. In this paper, the singular value decomposition and the spectral decomposition are compared.

Periodic variation of local paper structure was evaluated using two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (FFT) and spectral analysis. Since the periodic variation could originate from various sources and have different magnitudes and patterns depending on the origins, a complete analysis of local paper structure properties such as local grammage, local thickness, local apparent density and surface topography was proposed in this study. For a commercial copy paper, the individual periodic patterns for each local structural property were identified by using inverse FFT spectrums of the filtered spectrum. The spectral analysis of newsprint sample provided the period of variation quantitatively, which was useful in comparing the origins of the individual periodic patterns of the local structural properties.
