  • The Sausage radio relic is the arc-like radio structure in the cluster CIZA J2242.8+5301, whose observed properties can be best understood by synchrotron emission from relativistic electrons accelerated at a merger-driven shock. However, there remain a few puzzles that cannot be explained by the shock acceleration model with only in-situ injection. In particular, the Mach number inferred from the observed radio spectral index, Mradio ≈ 4.6, while the Mach number estimated from X-ray observations, MX−ray ≈ 2.7. In an attempt to resolve such a discrepancy, here we consider the re-acceleration model in which a shock of Ms ≈ 3 sweeps through the intracluster gas with a pre-existing population of relativistic electrons. We find that observed brightness profiles at multi frequencies provide strong constraints on the spectral shape of pre-existing electrons. The models with a power-law momentum spectrum with the slope, s ≈ 4.1, and the cutoff Lorentz factor, γe,c ≈ 3−5×104, can reproduce reasonably well the observed spatial profiles of radio fluxes and integrated radio spectrum of the Sausage relic. The possible origins of such relativistic electrons in the intracluster medium remain to be investigated further.

  • Wall pressure measurements and flow visualization were conducted for a 90 degree elbow with an axis curvature radius the same as its inner diameter (125 mm). Reynolds numbers 320,000 and 500,000, based on the inner diameter and bulk velocity, were examined. A deflected inflow, having an almost constant velocity slope and a faster velocity at the inside, was introduced. Ensemble averaged pressure distributions showed that no difference of normalized pressure could be found in both the Reynolds number cases. Power spectral density functions of pressures exhibited that the fluctuation having the Strouhal number (based on the inner diameter and bulk velocity) of 0.6 existed in the downstream region of the elbow, which was 0.1 larger than that of the uniform inflow case [1]. Results of numerical calculations qualitatively coincided with the experimental ones.

  • There is still a controversy going on about how to model energy dissipation due to breaking over frequency domain. In this study, we unveil the exact structure of energy dissipation using stochastic wave breaking model. It turns out that contrary to our present understanding, energy dissipation is cubically distributed over frequency domain. The verification of proposed model is conducted using the acquired data during SUPERTANK Laboratory Data Collection Project (Krauss et al., 1992). For further verification, we numerically simulate the nonlinear shoaling process of Conoidal wave over a beach of uniform slope, and obtain very promising results from the viewpoint of a skewness and asymmetry of wave field, usually regarded as the most fastidious parameter to satisfy.

  • We present results of AKARI observations toward 8 dense molecular cores which are previously known to be "starless". These cores show some spectral features which may imply characteristic internal motions. The observations were carried out at 8 bands (3, 4, 7, 11, 65, 90, 140, and 160 micron) with IRC and FIS instruments equipped in the AKARI. The archive data of 2MASS and Spitzer were also utilized. We found that 1 (L1582A) of 8 cores has a few embedded young stellar objects (YSOs) while the rest of them are still starless. The YSOs found in L1582A are identified by the slope of the spectral energy distribution or by the AKARI color-color diagram. The unusually broad linewidth toward L1582A, which is twice broader than one of starless cores, is also consistent with the existence of protostars in this core. The physical environment and evolution of the other "starless" cores where any AKARI point source is not detected will be discussed with help of their molecular line observations.

  • Gender differences have been studied by using spectral features such as median frequency (MDF) respectively. MDF is the most commonly used as a feature to describe muscle conduction velocity. The aim of this paper is to detect gender differences from surface EMG signals during isotonic contractions of the bicep Brachii. Eight volunteers participated in surface EMG recordings placed on the biceps brachii and each recording experiment continued until their exhaustion. We used feature values and regressive slopes and compared the feature changes from the onset to the endurance time to find gender differences. The result of experiments shows that the regressive slope of these features is valid to measure gender differences.

  • Offshore pipelines play an important role in the transportation of gas, oil, water and oil products. It is common to have a group of pipelines in the oil and gas field. To reduce the installation cost and time, dual pipelines are designed. There are great advantages in the installation of dual pipelines over two separate single lines. It can greatly reduce the cost for trench, back-filling and installation. However the installation of dual pipelines often requires technical challenges. Pipelines should be placed to be stable against external loadings during installation and design life period. Dual pipelines in trench can reduce the influence of external forces. To investigate the flow patterns and forces as trench depth and slope changes, number of experiments are conducted with PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) equipment in a Circulating Water Channel. Numerical approaches to simulate experimental conditions are also made to compare with experimental results. The velocity fields around dual pipelines in trench are investigated and analysed. Comparison of both results show similar patterns of flow around pipelines. It is proved that the trench depth contributes significantly on hydrodynamic stability. The trench slope also affects the pipeline stability. The results can be applied in the stability design of dual pipelines in trench section. The complex flow patterns can be effectively linked in the understanding of fluid motions around multi-circular bodies in trench.

  • We present the ultraviolet (UV) color-color relation of early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the nearby universe (0.05 < z < 0.12) to investigate the properties of hot stellar populations responsible for the UV excess (UVX). The initial sample of ETGs is selected by the spectroscopic redshift and the morphology parameter from the SDSS DR 7, and then cross-matched with the GALEX far-UV (FUV) and near-UV (NUV) GR6 data. The cross-matched ETG sample is further classified by their emission line characteristics in the optical spectra into quiescent, star-forming, and active galactic nucleus categories. Contaminations from early-type spiral galaxies, mergers, and morphologically disturbed galaxies are removed by visual inspection. By drawing the FUV-NUV (as a measure of UV spectral shape) versus FUV-r (as a measure of UVX strength) diagram for the final sample of -3700 quiescent ETGs, we find that the "old and dead" ETGs consist of a well-defined sequence in UV colors, the "UV red sequence," so that the stronger UVX galaxies should have a harder UV spectral shape systematically. However, the observed UV spectral slope is too steep to be reproduced by the canonical stellar population models in which the UV flux is mainly controlled by age or metallicity parameters. Moreover, 2 mag of color spreads both in FUV-NUV and FUV-r appear to be ubiquitous among any subsets in distance or luminosity. This implies that the UVX in ETGs could be driven by yet another parameter which might be even more influential than age or metallicity.

  • The polarization resistance of mild steel in 0.5M hydrochloric acid has been evaluated by using impedance (Z) and linear polarization (LPR) techniques and compared to the noise resistance obtained from electrochemical noise data. The degree of localization of this general corrosion has also been discussed by evaluating localization index and power spectral density. Polarization resistance obtained by LPR technique ($28\Omega$) was higher than that obtained by impedance technique ($15\Omega$). Noise resistance ($11\Omega$) was much lower than polarization resistance measured by both of above techniques. Higher polarization resistance obtained by LPR technique is generally caused by passivation effect in the presence of scales or deposits which can introduce an increased resistance as can low conductivity electrolytes. The reason why noise resistance is lower than polarization resistance is the effect of background noise detected by using three platinum electrodes cell in 0.5M hydrochloric acid. Slope($-\beta$) of power spectral density (PSD) obtained from analysis of noise data ($-\beta$ = 3.3) was much higher than 2 which indicates mild steel corroded uniformly. Localization index (LI) calculated from statistical analysis (LI=0.08) is much lower than 1 which indicates that mild steel did not corroded locally. However, LI value is still higher than $1x10^{-3}$ and this indicates that mild steel corroded locally in microscopic point of view.

  • More than 0.5 percent of land in Korea is used for cemetery and the rate is growing in spite of the increase in cremation these days. The systematic management of tombs may be possible through the ‘Feature Extraction’ method which is applied to the high-resolution satellite imagery. For this reason, this research focused on finding out the radiometric characteristics of tombs and the classification of them. An IKONOS image of northwest areas of Seoul with 8km x 10km dimension was analyzed. After sampling 24 tombs in the study area, the statistical radiometric characteristics of tombs are analyzed. And tombs were classified based on the criteria such as landscape, NDVI, and cluster analysis. In addition, it was investigated if the aspect or slope of the terrain influenced to the classification of tombs. As a result of this research, authors find that there is similarity between the classification tv NDVI and the classification through cluster analysis. And aspect or slope didn't have much influence on the classification of tombs.

  • Since the amplitude of voiced fall off at about -20dB/decade, dynamic range is often compressed prior to spectral analysis so that details at weak, high frequencies may be visible. Preemphasizing the speech, either by differentiating the analog speech s$\sub$a(t) prior to A/D conversion or by differencing the discrete-time s(n)=s$\sub$a(nT), compensating for falloff at high frequencies. The most common form of preemphasis is y(n)=s(n)-As(n-1), where A typically lies between 0.9 and 1.0 and reflects the degree of pre-emphasis. In This paper, we proposed that A is adjusted at each time by measuring the slope of envelope in frequency domain.
