The electronic structure of the Kondo insulator CeNiSn has been investigated by using photoemission spectroscopy. A satellite feature is observed in the valence band spectrum about 6 eV below the Ni 3d main peak, indicating a strong Ni 3d Coulomb correlation in CeNiSn. The Ce 4f partial spectral weight exhibits three peak structures, including one due to the 4f1\longrightarrow4f0 transition, another near EF, and the other which overlaps the Ni 3d main peak. We interpret the peak near EF as reflecting mainly the Ce 4f/Sn 5p hybridization, whereas that around the ni 3d main peak as reflecting both the Ce 4f/Ni 3d and Ce 5d/Ni 3d hybridization. Yield measurements across the 4d\longrightarrow4f threshold indicate the Ce valence to be close to 3+. The prominent Fermi edge suggests a metallic ground state in CeNiSn.
The purpose of this study was to characterize the impact shock wave and its attenuation, and the kinematic response of the lower extremity's joints to the impact shock during downhill running in which the lower extremity's extensor acts dominantly. For this study, fifteen subjects(mean age:$27.08{\pm}4.39$; mass:$76.30{\pm}6.60$; height:$177.25{\pm}4.11$) were required to run on the 0% grade treadmill and downhill grades of 7%, and 15% in random at speed of their preference. When the participant run, acceleration at the tibia and the sacrum and kinematic data of the lower extremity were collected for 20s so as to provide at least 5 strides for analysis at each grade. Peak impact accelerations were used to calculate shock attenuation between the tibia and sacrum in time domain at each grade. Fast Fourier transformation(FFT) and power spectral density(PSD) techniques were used to analyze impact shock factors and its attenuation in the frequency domain. Joint coordinate system technique was used to compute angular displacement of the ankle and knee joint in three dimension. The conclusions were drawn as fellows: 1. Peak impact accelerations of the tibia and sacrum in downhill run were greater than that of 0% grade run, but no significant between conditions. Peak shock of PSD resembled also in pattern of peak impact acceleration. The wave of impact shock attenuation between the tibia and sacrum decreased with increasing grade, but didn't find a significant difference between grade conditions. 2. Adduction/abduction, flexion/extention, and internal/external rotation of the ankle and knee joints at support phase between grade conditions didn't make much difference. 3. At grade of 7% and 15%, there were relationship between the knee of the flexion/extension movement and peak impact acceleration during heel strike and found also it in the ankle of plantar/dorsiflexion at grade of 15%.
In this research, we propose an efficient Speech/Music discrimination method that uses spectrum analysis and neural network. The proposed method extracts the duration feature parameter(MSDF) from a spectral peak track by analyzing the spectrum, and it was used as a feature for Speech/Music discriminator combined with the MFSC. The neural network was used as a Speech/Music discriminator, and we have reformed various experiments to evaluate the proposed method according to the training pattern selection, size and neural network architecture. From the results of Speech/Music discrimination, we found performance improvement and stability according to the training pattern selection and model composition in comparison to previous method. The MSDF and MFSC are used as a feature parameter which is over 50 seconds of training pattern, a discrimination rate of 94.97% for speech and 92.38% for music. Finally, we have achieved performance improvement 1.25% for speech and 1.69% for music compares to the use of MFSC.
All contemporary seismic Codes have adopted smooth design acceleration response spectra, which have derived by statistical analysis of many elastic response spectra of natural accelerograms. The above smooth design spectra are characterized by two main branches, an horizontal branch that is 2.5 times higher than the peak ground acceleration, and a declining parabolic branch. According to Eurocode EN/1998, the period range of the horizontal, flat branch is extended from 0.1 s, for rock soils, up to 0.8 s for softer ones. However, from many natural recorded accelerograms of important earthquakes, the real spectral amplification factor appears to be much higher than 2.5 and this means that the spectrum leads to an unsafe seismic design of the structures. This point is an issue open to question and it is the object of the present study. In the present paper, the spectral amplification factor of the smooth design acceleration spectra is re-calculated on the grounds of a known "reliability index" for a desired probability of exceedance. As a pilot scheme, the seismic area of Greece is chosen, as it is the most seismically hazardous area in Europe. The accelerograms of the 82 most important earthquakes, which have occurred in Greece during the last 38 years, are used. The soil categories are taken into account according to EN/1998. The results that have been concluded from these data are compared with the results obtained from other strong earthquakes reported in the World literature.
Many studies have been performed to predict a reliable and accurate stress-range distribution and fatigue damage regarding the Gaussian wide-band stress response due to multi-peak waves and multiple dynamic loads. So far, most of the approximation models provide slightly inaccurate results in comparison with the rain-flow counting method as an exact solution. A step-by-step study was carried out to develop new approximate spectral moments that are close to the rain-flow counting moment, which can be used for the development of a fatigue damage model. Using the special parameters and bandwidth parameters, four kinds of parameter-based combinations were constructed and estimated using the R-squared values from regression analysis. Based on the results, four candidate empirical formulas were determined and compared with the rain-flow counting moment, probability density function, and root mean square (RMS) value for relative distance. The new approximate spectral moments were finally decided through comparison studies of eight response spectra. The new spectral moments presented in this study could play an important role in improving the accuracy of fatigue damage model development. The present study shows that the new approximate moment is a very important variable for the enhancement of Gaussian wide-band fatigue damage assessment.
In this paper, we propose the spectral transition rate (STR) as a novel feature for speech and music discrimination (SMD). We observed that the spectral peaks of speech signal are gradually changing due to coarticulation effect. However, the sound of musical instruments in general tends to keep the peak frequencies and energies unchanged for relatively long period of time compared to speech. The STR of speech is much higher than that of music. The experimental results show that the STR based SMD method outperforms a conventional method. Especially, the STR based SMD gives relatively fast output without any performance degradation.
An empirical functional form was suggested for the analysis of the emission spectrum of high-power light-emitting diode (LED) consisting of a sharp blue peak from the LED chips and a broad yellow peak from the phosphor layer. The peak positions, half widths, shape parameters, and amplitudes of these two peaks were reliably obtained as a function of the temperature, and the results were discussed qualitatively in relation with the junction temperature. The adoption of an inert liquid was found to have significantly reduced the LED temperature and the color shift of the emitted light. The phenomenological approach used in this study may be helpful in the simulation of the LED spectrum under various thermal conditions, and may thus be helpful in the improvement of the device performance.
Intrinsic UV reflection and fluorescence behaviors of polycarbonate, polyurethane and poly(ethylene terephthalate) films were investigated in order to characterize the interaction of water in these films. During water sorption process, UV reflection spectra of polycarbonate and polyurethane films showed little peak position changes. Fluorescence emission spectra of polycarbonate films showed red spectral shifts from 332 nm with water immersion time. This red-shifted peak could be due to phenyl-2-phenoxybenzoate, which is one of the major thermal degradation products in polycarbonate. Fluorescence peaks of polyurethane films appeared at two different positions and the ratio of these peak intensities increased with increasing immersion time. In the case of PET films, the UV reflection spectrum showed the peak intensity around 340 nm to change in response to water sorption. The fluorescence near 388 nm probably due to ground state dimer exhibited sensitivity with water sorption, when excited at 340 nm.

By utilizing singular value decomposition (SVD) and shift averaged Harr wavelet transform (WT) with a set of Daubechies wavelet coefficients (1/2, -1/2), a method that can simultaneously eliminate an unwanted large solvent peak and noise peaks from NMR data has been developed. Noise elimination was accomplished by shift-averaging the time domain NMR data after a large solvent peak was suppressed by SVD. The algorithms took advantage of the WT, giving excellent results for the noise elimination in the Gaussian type NMR spectral lines of NMR data pretreated with SVD, providing superb results in the adjustment of phase and magnitude of the spectrum. SVD and shift averaged Haar wavelet methods were quantitatively evaluated in terms of threshold values and signal to noise (S/N) ratio values.
A new algorithm for determining noise level is proposed for more reliability in interpreting spectral data for complex Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) mass spectra of petroleum. In the new algorithm, a moving window with a fixed number of data points was adopted, instead of a fixed m/z width. In the analysis of petroleum, it was found that a moving window of 50,000 or more data points was optimal. This optimized automated peak picking performed well even with frequency-dependant noise in the mass spectrum. Additionally, this fast, automated peak picking algorithm was suitable for the analysis of a large set of samples.
