Coarse clumping of solid materials within diseased biological cells can have a marked influence on the light scattering pattern. Perturbations in refractive index lead to distinct variations in the cytometric signature, especially apparent over wide scattering angles. The large dynamic range of scattering intensities restricts collection of data to narrow angular intervals believed to have the highest potential for medical diagnosis. We propose the use of an interference filter to reduce the dynamic range. Selective attenuation of scattering intensity levels is expected to allow simultaneous data collection over a wide angular interval. The calculated angular transmittance of a commercial shortwave-pass filter of cut-off wavelength 580 nm indicates significant attenuation of scattering peaks below ${\~}\;10^{circ}$, and reasonable peak equalization at higher angles. For the three-dimensional calculation of laser light scattered by cells we use a spectral method code that models cells as spatially varying dielectrics, stationary in time. However, we perform preliminary experimental testing with the interference filter on polystyrene microspheres instead of biological cells. A microfluidic toolkit is used for the manipulation of the microspheres. The paper intends to illustrate the principle of a light scattering detection system incorporating an interference filter for selective attenuation of scattering peaks.
5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) has been used to stimulate endogenous protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) in tumor and then initiate PDT. Recently, ALA-Hexyl ester (He-ALA) was found much effective than ALA on producing PpIX in cancer cells. To clarify the transportation mechanism of ALA and He-ALA, the detection of them is the important step. ALA and its derivatives all don't emit fluorescence, so the Raman spectroscopy was used here for the direct detection of ALA and He-ALA. The results showed that ALA and He-ALA have the common strong Raman peaks at 2930, 2950 CM$\^$-1/, due to the CH$_2$ vibration. The peak 3050 CM$\^$-1/ appeared in ALA spectrum can be attributed to OH vibration, while the peaks of 2860, 2900 CM$\^$-1/ in He-ALA spectrum were assigned as the modes of CH$_3$. This Raman spectral characteristic is consistence with the structure difference of He-ALA and ALA. Thus, Raman spectroscopy provides a new way to detect and distinguish ALA and He-ALA, and could be explored further in biology system.
Estimation of damage probability of buildings under a future earthquake is an essential issue to ensure the seismic reliability. Fragility curves are useful tools for showing the probability of structural damage due to earthquakes as a function of ground motion indices. The purpose of this study is to compare the damage probability of R/C buildings with low and high level of strength and ductility through fragility analysis. Two different types of sample buildings have been considered which represent the building types mentioned above. The first one was designed according to TEC-2007 and the latter was designed according to TEC-1975. The pushover curves of sample buildings were obtained via pushover analyses. Using 60 ground motion records, nonlinear time-history analyses of equivalent single degree of freedom systems were performed using bilinear hysteretic model and peak-oriented hysteretic model with stiffness - strength deterioration for each scaled elastic spectral displacement. The damage measure is maximum inter-story drift ratio and each performance level considered in this study has an assumed limit value of damage measure. Discrete damage probabilities were calculated using statistical methods for each considered performance level and elastic spectral displacement. Consequently, continuous fragility curves have been constructed based on the lognormal distribution assumption. Furthermore, the effect of hysteresis model parameters on the damage probability is investigated.
The behavior of tyrosine(Tyr.) residue of Bombyx mori silk fiber from yellow fluorescent cocoon has been examined for the dependence of pH in aqueous silk solution under the presence of orange II salt. Through the peak separation of angular dependence of spectral pattern of 15N-Tyr. and [1-13C]-Tyr. between the fiber axis and the molecular bond direction, N-H bond in fiber as well as the orientation distribution around the fiber axis were analyzed. Also, and sericin component was obtained from these angular dependence of oriented spectral pattern. The pH dependence of the 13C NMR chemical shift of B. mori silk fibroin was examined in aqueous solution in the presince of orange II are broad at pH$\geq$7.0. However, these become sharper at pH$\geq$8.0 and remain sharp at higher pH. In these higher pH range, a chemical shift change occurs due to the deprotonation of the Tyr. side group of fibroin. At higher pH. such a hydrophobic cluster is destroyed because of the electrostatic interaction according to the deprotonation of the Tyr-OH group.
Two-dimensional analysis provides a comprehensive description of the structure, scales of pattern and directional components in a spatial data set. In spectral analysisi, four functions are illustrated,; the autocorrelation, the periodogram, the R-spectrum and the $\theta$ -spectrum. The R-spectrum and $\theta$ -spectrum function respectively summarize the periodogram in term of scale of pattern and directional components. Sampling is measured in the Naejang National Park area where the Daphniphyllum trees grow. 320 contiguous (15$\times$15)m plots are located along the transect and density of all trees over DBH 3 cm recorded respectively. 12 species of vascular plant are recorded in this survey area. The trend surface of density of all plant are estimated using polynomial regression and are exhibited in 3-dimensional graph and density contour map. Transformation to the corresponding polar spectrum from the periodogram emphasized the directional components and the scales to pattern. R-spectrum corresponding to the scale of pattern of periodogram showed a large peak 15.47 in the interval 9$\theta$-spectrum corresponding to directional components have two peaks 8.28 and 11.05 in the interval $35^{\circ}\theta <45^{\circ}and 125^{\circ}\theta< <135^{\circ}, respectively. Programs to compute all the analyses described in this study was obtained from Dr. Ranshow and was translated to BASIC by the author.
Air Quality Index (AQI) is a pointer to broadcast short term air quality. This paper presents one day ahead AQI forecasting on seasonal basis for three major cities in Maharashtra State, India by using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Genetic Programming (GP). The meteorological observations & previous AQI from 2005-2008 are used to predict next day's AQI. It was observed that GP captures the phenomenon better than ANN and could also follow the peak values better than ANN. The overall performance of GP seems better as compared to ANN. Stochastic nature of the input parameters and the possibility of auto-correlation might have introduced time lag and subsequent errors in predictions. Spectral Analysis (SA) was used for characterization of the error introduced. Correlational dependency (serial dependency) was calculated for all 24 models prepared on seasonal basis. Particular lags (k) in all the models were removed by differencing the series, that is converting each i'th element of the series into its difference from the (i-k)"th element. New time series is generated for all seasonal models in synchronization with the original time line & evaluated using ANN and GP. The statistical analysis and comparison of GP and ANN models has been done. We have proposed a promising approach of use of GP coupled with SA for real time prediction of seasonal multicity AQI.

Seismic dissipation devices can play a crucial role in mitigating earthquake damages, loss of life and post-event repair and downtime costs. This research investigates the use of ring springs with high-force-to-volume (HF2V) dissipaters to create damage-free, recentring connections and structures. HF2V devices are passive rate-dependent extrusion-based devices with high energy absorption characteristics. Ring springs are passive energy dissipation devices with high self-centring capability to reduce the residual displacements. Dynamic behaviour of a system with nonlinear structural stiffness and supplemental hybrid damping via HF2V devices and ring spring dampers is used to investigate the design space and potential. HF2V devices are modelled with design forces equal to 5% and 10% of seismic weight and ring springs are modelled with loading stiffness values of 20% and 40% of initial structural stiffness and respective unloading stiffness of 7% and 14% of structural stiffness (equivalent to 35% of their loading stiffness). Using a suite of 20 design level earthquake ground motions, nonlinear response spectra for 8 different configurations are generated. Results show up to 50% reduction in peak displacements and greater than 80% reduction in residual displacements of augmented structure compared to the baseline structure. These gains come at a cost of a significant rise in the base shear values up to 200% mainly as a result of the force contributed by the supplemental devices.

We explain the results of Yu et al. (2015b) of the novel sharpness angle measurement to a large number of spectra obtained from the Fermi gamma-ray burst monitor. The sharpness angle is compared to the values obtained from various representative emission models: blackbody, single-electron synchrotron, synchrotron emission from a Maxwellian or power-law electron distribution. It is found that more than 91% of the high temporally and spectrally resolved spectra are inconsistent with any kind of optically thin synchrotron emission model alone. It is also found that the limiting case, a single temperature Maxwellian synchrotron function, can only contribute up to 58+23−18% of the peak flux. These results show that even the sharpest but non-realistic case, the single-electron synchrotron function, cannot explain a large fraction of the observed spectra. Since any combination of physically possible synchrotron spectra added together will always further broaden the spectrum, emission mechanisms other than optically thin synchrotron radiation are likely required in a full explanation of the spectral peaks or breaks of the GRB prompt emission phase.
Installation of sensors networks for continuous in-service monitoring of structures and their efficiency conditions is a current research trend of paramount interest. On-line monitoring systems could be strategically useful for road infrastructures, which are expected to perform efficiently and be self-diagnostic, also in emergency scenarios. This work researches damage detection in composite concrete-steel structures that are typical for highway overpasses and bridges. The techniques herein proposed assume that typical damage in the deck occurs in form of delamination and cracking, and that it affects the peak power spectral density of dynamic curvature. The investigation is performed by combining results of measurements collected by long-gauge fiber optic strain sensors installed on monitored structure and a statistic approach. A finite element model has been also prepared and validated for deepening peculiar aspects of the investigation and the availability of the method. The proposed method for real time applications is able to detect a documented unusual behavior (e.g., damage or deterioration) through long-gauge fiber optic strain sensors measurements and a probabilistic study of the dynamic curvature power spectral density.
The application of neutron noise analysis (NNA) to the ex-core neutron detector signal for monitoring the vibration characteristics of a reactor core support barrel (CSB) was investigated. Ex-core flux data were generated by using a nonanalog Monte Carlo neutron transport method in a simulated CSB model where the implicit capture and Russian roulette technique were utilized. First and third order beam and shell modes of CSB vibration were modeled based on parallel processing simulation. A NNA module was developed to analyze the ex-core flux data based on its time variation, normalized power spectral density, normalized cross-power spectral density, coherence, and phase differences. The data were then analyzed with a fuzzy logic module to determine the vibration characteristics. The ex-core neutron signal fluctuation was directly proportional to the CSB's vibration observed at 8Hz and15Hzin the beam mode vibration, and at 8Hz in the shell mode vibration. The coherence result between flux pairs was unity at the vibration peak frequencies. A distinct pattern of phase differences was observed for each of the vibration models. The developed fuzzy logic module demonstrated successful recognition of the vibration frequencies, modes, orders, directions, and phase differences within 0.4 ms for the beam and shell mode vibrations.
