The advantages of the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) are high spectral efficiency, resiliency to RF interference, and lower multi-path distortion. To further utilize vast channel capacity of the multiuser OFDM, one has to find the efficient adaptive subchannel and bit allocation among users. In this paper, we compare the performance of the linear programming dual of the 0-1 integer programming formulation with the existing convex optimization approach for the optimal subchannel and bit allocation problem of the multiuser OFDM. Utilizing tight lower bound provided by the LP dual formulation, we develop a primal heurisitc algorithm based on the LP dual solution. The performance of the primal heuristic is compared with MAO, ESA heuristic solutions, and integer programming solution on MATLAB simulation on a system employing M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) assuming a frequency-selective channel consisting of three independent Rayleigh multi-paths.

8SQAM(8-state Superposed Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) being a new modem technique for use in power and bandwidth limited digital communication system generates output signals which have a mか and continuous phase transition and a reduced envelope fluctuation by keeping correlation between amplitudes and phases of two subsequent symbols. Also, 8SQAM signal is free of inter-symbol interference(ISI), and has a compact power spectrum. Accordingly 8SQAM, as compared with a conventional 8PSK, is influenced a little by inter-modulation(IM), inter-symbol interference(ISI) and adjacent channel interference(ACI) in a nonlinearly amplified multi-channel(SCPC-FDMA) environment. In this paper, the performance of 8SQAM system in a nonlinearly amplified multi-channel interference environment is analyzed via computer simulation The simulation result shows that 8SQAM outperforms 8PSK with roll-off value of $\alpha$ = 0.3 by 2.7dB in CNR to maintain BER=1$\times$10$^{-4}$ when input back-off(IBO) of HPA is 1dB and channel space is 41.7% of the data bit rate(i.e., spectral efficiency = 2.40b/s/Hz).

Reliable high-speed data communications over insufficient channel bandwidth is one of the major challenges of harsh wireless environments that push the achievable spectral efficiency far below its theoretical limits. A Quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) scheme is a userful modulation technique for achieving high data rate transmission without increasing the bandwidth of wireless communication systems. The exact general bit error rate (BER) expression of arbitrary rectangular quadrature amplitude modulation has not yet been derived. In this paper, a generalized closed-form expression for the BER performance of rectangular QAM with Gray code bit mapping is derived and analyzed in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. First we analyze the BER performance of an I-ary PAM scheme. Regular patterns in the k-th bit error probability are observed while developing the EBR expression. From these patterns we provide the exact and general closed-from EBR expression of an I-ary PAM. Then we present a general closed-from expression for BER of an arbitrary IXJ rectangular QAM by considering that this signaling format consists of two PAM scheme, i.e., I-ary and J-ary PAM. A simple approximate BER expression for rectangular QAM is given as well.

In this paper, we propose an 0-1 integer programming model formulating the optimal subchannel and bit allocation problem of the multiuser OFDM. We employ a dual-decomposition method that provides a tight linear programming (LP) relaxation bound. Simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of the 0-1 integer programming model. MATLAB simulation on a system employing M-ary quardarature amplitude modulation (MQAM) assuming a frequency-selective channel consisting of three independent Rayleigh multi-paths are carried with the optimal subchannel and bit allocation solution generated by 0-1 integer programming model.
The gas-liquid counter-current flow limitation (CCFL) is closely related to efficient and safety operation of many equipment in industrial cycle. Air-water countercurrent flow experiments were performed in a tube with diameter of 25 mm to understand the triggering mechanism of CCFL. A parallel electrode probe was utilized to measure film thickness whereby the time domain and frequency domain characteristics of liquid film was obtained. The amplitude of the interface wave is small at low liquid flow rate while it becomes large at high liquid flow rate after being disturbed by the airflow. The spectral characteristic curve shows a peak-shaped distribution. The crest exists between 0 and 10 Hz and the amplitude decreases with the frequency increase. The analysis of visual observation and characteristic of film thickness indicate that two flooding mechanisms were identified at low and high liquid flow rate, respectively. At low liquid flow rate, the interfacial waves upward propagation is responsible for the formation of CCFL onset. While flooding at high liquid flow rate takes place as a direct consequence of the liquid bridging in tube due to the turbulent flow pattern. Moreover, it is believed that there is a transition region between the low and high liquid flow rate.
Background and Objectives: Clear speech is an effective communication strategy used in difficult listening situations that draws on techniques such as accurate articulation, a slow speech rate, and the inclusion of pauses. Although too slow speech and improperly amplified spectral information can deteriorate overall speech intelligibility, certain amplitude of increments of the mid-frequency bands (1 to 3 dB) and around 50% slower speech rates of clear speech, when compared to those in conversational speech, were reported as factors that can improve speech intelligibility positively. The purpose of this study was to identify whether amplitude increments of mid-frequency areas and slower speech rates were evident in Korean clear speech as they were in English clear speech. Subjects and Methods: To compare the acoustic characteristics of the two methods of speech production, the voices of 60 participants were recorded during conversational speech and then again during clear speech using a standardized sentence material. Results: The speech rate and longterm average speech spectrum (LTASS) were analyzed and compared. Speech rates for clear speech were slower than those for conversational speech. Increased amplitudes in the mid-frequency bands were evident for the LTASS of clear speech. Conclusions:The observed differences in the acoustic characteristics between the two types of speech production suggest that Korean clear speech can be an effective communication strategy to improve speech intelligibility.
Purpose of this study is to quantitatively characterize the fracture roughness which was measured with a confocal laser scanning microscope. The roughness discrete data measured by confocal laser microscope were analyzed by spectral analysis and fast Fourier transform (FFT).The roughness data by used noise reduction filter were applied for fractal analysis to describe roughness features quantitatively. Artificial fractures created by Brazilian test on granites were used to measure fracture roughness under the confocal laser scanning microscope. Measurements were performed along three scan lines on each fracture surface. 36 scan lines were determined on 12 specimens in total. Features of roughness showed that coarse and medium grained granites tend to more rough features than those of fine grained granites. Continuous analog data of roughness is possible to described as discrete data of measure roughness with a fixed interval under the confocal laser microscope. Results of FFT with the measured data showed the highest values on the second harmonics. Distribution of average amplitude of second harmonics was observed 0.9853 in coarse grained granite, 1.0792 in medium grained granite and 0.6794 in fine grained granite. This indicates that the larger roughness has the higher energy of harmonics as the result of fractal analysis in low frequency zone.
Objective : By examining EEG status in Korean Traditional Medicine (KTM) from the viewpoint of 'form-qi theory(形氣論)', We wish to prepare for the fundamentals of applicability of KTM diagnoses to EEG. In addition, through reinterpretation of existing Western Medicine reports from the viewpoint of KTM, We tried to find out interrelationship between them. Method : In this paper, a methodology applicable to KTM diagnoses of EEG is presented from the EEG features in waveform characteristics, personalized diversity, and cognitive activity reflection. Results : Frequency bands are assigned to corresponding one of the eight trigrams in terms of yin/yang balance, which is analogous with EEG spectrum analysis mostly used in EEG quantification. The amplitude ratio of each EEG for each frequency band gives meaningful index numbers which can be used in EEG data interpretation, and every index number is named after the sixty four hexagrams. These approaches are adopted through both '4-band classification system and '6-band classification system', and applied to pre-existing reported EEG data obtained from normal adults. These analyses show that changes and distribution pattern in the index numbers are observed as a whole on both left-right line and front-back line connecting EEG measurement cephalic electrodes. And differences in distribution pattern of three index numbers deduced from '6-band classification system' are discussed according to constitution. Conclusion : The index numbers introduced here, which are the spectral power ratio for each EEG, are based on KTM yin/yang balance. These index numbers vary according to cephalic location, so its application in terms of traditional meridian theory is strongly expected. The index number distribution also shows different patterns according to constitution.
Although there are high concentrations of zinc and taurine in ocular tissue, their exact role and correlation in the visual process are not clear. The purpose of present study was to clarity this point using electroretinogram (ERG) recording and spectrophotometer measurements before and after zinc and taurine treatment in bullfrog's eye. The optimal zinc concentration used in this study was 10$^{-2}$ M ZnCl$_2$120 ${mu}ell$/12$m\ell$ ringer solution while the optimal turine concentration was 10$^{-2}$ M taurine 12${mu}ell$/12$m\ell$ ringer solution. For the effects of zinc and taurine on the retinal function, the changes of ERG parameters (especially threshold and b-wave) and absorption spectra were observed before and after treatment. It is noteworthy that high concentrations of zinc and taurine present in the retinal pigment epithelium and the retina. Our results indicate that dark-adapted ERG threshold became elevated and the peak amplitude of b-wave was increased with zinc and taurine treatment. Furthermore there are some synergism effects between zinc and taurine as a result of co-treatment. In spectral scan, absorbance increment due to zinc and taurine treatment was shown over the whole range of spectral range (300-750 nm) with some differences in absorbance increment depending on the case of treatment. As the results of above we believe that zinc and taurine, which are abundant in the retinal pigment epithelium and the retina particularly, may be essential factors for visual process, have some synergism with each other and be required to improve the visual sensitivity during visual adaptation.
In this work, the effect of noise and distortion of a telephone channel on the speech recognition is studied, and methods to improve the recognition rate are proposed. Computer simulation is done using the 100-word test data whichwere made by pronouncing ten times 100-phonetically balanced Korean isolated words in a speaker dependent mode. First, a spectral subtraction method is suggested to improve the noisy speech recognition. Then, the effect of bandwidth limiting and channel distortion is studied. It has been found that bandwidth limiting and amplitude distortion lower the recognition rate significantly, but phase distortion affects little. To reduce the channel effect, we modify the reference pattern according to some training data. When both channel noise and distortion exist, the recognition rate without the proposed method is merely 7.7~26.4%, but the recognition rate with the proposed method is drastically increased to 76.2~92.3%.
