A plastic zone size is regarded as a measure of material resistance, and also it determines the fracture behavior. The importance of estimating or measuring the plastic zone size cannot be too emphasized. In this article, SDSP(Stereo Digital Speckle Photography) is examined as a new techniques to measure the plastic zone developed in a ductile metal. This technique is simple, vibration free and non-contact, and measures simultaneously in-plane displacements as well as out-of plane displacements like the side necking. Experimental results for a CT specimen are presented to demonstrate the accuracy in comparison with those obtained by recrystallization technique and finite element analysis.

Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry(ESPI) is one of optical technique to measure displacement precisely, uses CCD camera to show result image in real time. General ESPI system measures in-plane or out-of-plane displacement. Shearography is one of electronic speckle pattern interferometric methods which allow full-field observation of surface displacement derivatives and it is robust in vibration. The shearography provides non-contacting technique of evaluating defects nondestructively In this study, the shearography was used to evaluate defects in Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic(CFRP). Various sizes of artificial defects were embedded in various depths of woven CFRP plate. Effects due to the variation of size and depth of defects were evaluated in this study.
In this paper, we report a new scheme of multimode fiber sensor which uses pattern matching method. Fiber speckle pattern allows the wide dynamic range of the intensity based sensor. The proposed method uses pre-built specklegram database which is made by image processing techniques of wavelet transform and edge detection for the sake of compact data storage and fast sensing time. We demonstrate our proposed sensor and the experimental results will do presented.

In this paper, we propose a parameter-free smoothing method for speckle images, i.e., an adaptive least squares image smoothing technique implemented in a multistep environment. The pertinent smoothing window size at a given pixel is determined by the discontinuity measure which is defined by the ratio of the local variance and mean squares of intensity values of pixels over the smoothing window centered there. The mode of the discontinuity measure at each step is estimated to replace the noise variance parameter that is required in the adaptive smoothing. Computer simulation shows that the proposed multistep technique can smooth homogeneous regions satisfactorily while preserving fine details near boundaries.
FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) radar system is widely used in autonomous driving and navigation applications due to its high detection capabilities independent of weather conditions and environments. However, radar signals can be easily contaminated by various noises such as speckle noise, receiver saturation, and multipath reflection, which can worsen sensing performance. To handle this problem, we propose a learning-free noise removal technique for radar to enhance detection performance. The proposed method leverages adaptive thresholding to remove speckle noise and receiver saturation, and wavelet transform to detect multipath reflection. After noise removal, the radar image is reconstructed with the geometric structure of the surrounding environments. We verify that our method effectively eliminated noise and can be applied to autonomous driving by improving the accuracy of odometry and place recognition.

Quality measures play an important role in the field of image processing. Such measures are commonly used to assess the performance of different algorithms that are designed to perform a specific image processing task. In this paper we propose two novel measures for image quality assessment based on the notion of correlation between fuzzy sets. Two different definitions fur the correlation between fuzzy sets have been used. In order to calculate the proposed quality measures two approaches were evaluated, one with direct application of the measures to the image′s pixels and the other using the fuzzy set corresponding to the normalized histogram of the image. A comparative study of the proposed measures is performed by investigating their behavior using images with different types of distortions, such as impulsive "salt at pepper" noise, additive white Gaussian noise, multiplicative speckle noise, blurring, gamma distortion, and JPEG compression.
A digital image correlation(DIC) method is a whole-field measurement technique that acquires surface displacements and strains from images information which characterized a random speckle as intensity grey levels. Recently years, this DIC method is being developed and used increasingly in various research. In this study, we tried to apply to aluminum alloy(Al 6061-T6) using DIC method and strain gauge. DIC results demonstrated the usefulness and ability to determine a strain. The test specimen used in this study was an aluminum alloy(Al 6061-T6, thickness 1 mm). For a strain measurement, a strain gauge was attached at the center of a specimen. A specimen was lightly sprayed with a white paint and a black dot pattern was sprayed on its fully dried white surface to obtain a random speckle. The experimental apparatus used to perform the tensile test consisted of universal dynamic tester(5 kN; T.O. Co.) under displacement speed of 0.5, 1.0 and 3.0 mm/min. A Model 5100 B Scanner(V. Co.) used to obtain a strain. A CCD camera connected to a PC uses to record the images of the specimen surface. After acquisition, the images were transferred to PC where the DIC software was implemented. An acquired image was evaluated by the DIC program. DIC method for displacement and strain was suggests and it results show a good consistent remarkably. DIC results demonstrated the usefulness and ability to determine surface strain was better than by using classical measurements. The strain field measurement using a DIC is so useful that it can be applied to map strain distributions at a full area. DIC method can evaluate a strain change so it can predict a location of fracture. The findings of the investigation suggest that the DIC method is an efficient and reliable tool for full-field monitoring and detailed damage characterization of materials.
In this paper, we present a method of detecting the boundary of the intima-media complex for automated measurement based on dynamic programming from carotid artery B-mode ultrasound images and then show the experimental results. We apply the dynamic programming for determining the optimal locations that a cost function is minimized. The cost function includes cost terms which are representing image features such as intensity, intensity gradient and geometrical continuity of the vessel interfaces. Moreover, we improve the boundary continuity by applying the B-spline to smooth the rough boundary due to noise such as speckle, dropout and weak edges. The proposed method has obtained more accurate reproducible results than conventional edge-detection by considering multiple image features and ensures efficient automated measurement by solving the problems of the inter- and intra-observer variability and its inefficiency due to manual measurement.
In this paper describes image enhancement technique using deconvolution processing for ultrasonic nondestructive testing. . When flaws are detected for B-scan or C-scan, blurring effect which is caused by the moving intervals of transducer degrades the quality of images. In addition, acquisited images suffer form speckle noise which is caused by the ultrasonic components reflected from the grain boundary of material [1,2]. The deconvolution technique can restore sharp peak value or clean image from blurring signal or image. This processing is applied to C-scan image obtained from known specimen. Experimental results show that the deconvolution processing contributes to get improved the quality of C-scan images.
Two RADARSAT SAR images with different modes acquired by Canadian Space Agency to test the effectiveness of geological lineament extraction and spring water detection over the Cheju Island. Geological lineaments are poorly developed this basalt dominant volcanic island, but more linear features can be extracted when SAR and TM images are simultaneously analyzed than when TM image alone is used. This results mainly owe to the facts that RADARSAT SAR systems are able to provide data with different frequencies, azimuth, and incidence angles. Distribution of spring water along coast is poorly correlated with geological lineaments or drainage pattern, but those in middle range of mountain region are developed along geological lineaments. Detection of spring water using remotely sensed images are turned out to be very difficult to achieve. Radial shaped sea surface temperature anomaly derived from TM thermal band should be the best candidate for spring water, but the resolution is not high enough. We also investigate the normalized radar cross section (or sigma naught) converted from RADARSAT and ERS-1 SAR data but to discriminate the spring water effectively except where relatively large water mass is observed on land side. Speckle noise and irregularity in physical sea surface condition are the serious obstacles for this application. ERS-1 SAR image acquired in low incidence angle was more useful for geological lineament estimation and water body study than RADARSAT SAR images with high incidence angles. Therefore the selection of incidence angle is critical in geological and spring water applications of SAR images, and low incidence angles less than about 30$^{\circ}$ are recommended to monitor the Cheju volcanic island.
