  • This pioneer study investigates the size effect on the compressive and tensile strengths of fiber-reinforced self-compacting concrete (FR-SCC) with different specimens, before and after exposure to elevated temperatures. 432 self-compacting concrete (SCC) specimens with two concrete grades (50 and 80MPa) and three steel fiber ratios (0%, 0.5% and 1%) were prepared and tested. Moreover, based on the experimental results, new formulations were proposed to predict the residual strengths for different specimens. A parametric study was also carried out to investigate the accuracy of proposed formulations. Residual strength results showed that the cylinder specimen with dimensions of $100{\times}200mm$ was the most affected, while the cube with a size of 100 mm maintained a constant difference with the standard cylinder ($150{\times}300mm$). Temperature effect on the cube specimen (150 mm) was the least in comparison to other specimen sizes and types. In general, provision of steel fibers in SCC mixtures resulted in a reduction in temperature effect on the variance of a conversion factor. Parametric study results confirm that the proposed numerical models are safe to be used for all types of SCC specimens.

  • This study investigates spalling properties of high performance concrete, 60MPa clan, made with the various types of coarse aggregate and adding ratio of polypropylene(PP) fiber. As experimental parameters, totally sixteen specimens of ${\phi}100{\times}200mm$ in size are prepared: one specimen for control without fiber, ten specimens with different coarse aggregate types, along with 0.05, 0.1, 0.15 percent of PP fiber in each. 1 hour fire test is conducted and then spalling appearance, spalling degree and residual compressive strength are examined. In addition, sit specimens made with two types of coarse aggregate site, along with same adding ratio of fiber are supplementally done, and only spalling properties is examined. Test results showed that control concrete and most specimens containing 0.05% of PP fiber exhibited 4 to 3 level of spalling degree, resulting severe explosive spalling, except for the specimen using basalt aggregate(Bc) showing 2 to 3 level of that. Especially, the Bc specimen containing 0.1% of the fiber exhibited that residual compressive strength value was 32%, which is 10% higher than other specimens using limestone or granite. Spalling resistance performance was also effective as aggregate size increase.

  • The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate the compressive strength, shear strength, bending strength, and crack control by the mixture of the hwang-toh. The size of compressive specimens is $200{\times}200{\times}400(mm)$, and the size of shear, bending specimens is $200{\times}200{\times}600(mm)$. Finally, crack control specimens for comparative comparison is $200{\times}200{\times}15(mm)$. The mixture of the hwang-toh is as follows; Hwangtoh( H)+Water(W), H+W+Sand(S), H+W+S+sTraw(0.5%), H+W+S+sT(1.0%). The actual height, width, and the length are measured at the center of all specimens. The main parameters are mixture ratio of hwang-toh, straw and age of specimens. The test results are as follows. (1) The compressive strength is linearly increased until 15 weeks according to specimen ages. (2) About crack control, the specimen added in 1% straw is the most effective.

  • This paper presents experiments and theoretical analysis on shear behavior of eight concrete-encased square concrete-filled steel tube (CECFST) specimens and three traditional reinforced concrete (RC) specimens. A total of 11 specimens with the test parameters including the shear span-to-depth ratio, steel tube size and studs arrangement were tested to explore the shear performance of CECFST specimens. The failure mode, shear capacity and displacement ductility were thoroughly evaluated. The test results indicated that all the test specimens failed in shear, and the CECFST specimens enhanced by the interior CFST core exhibited higher shear capacity and better ductility performance than that of the RC specimens. When the other parameters were the same, the larger steel tube size, the smaller shear span-to-depth ratio and the existence of studs could lead to the more satisfactory shear behavior. Then, based on the compatible truss-arch model, a set of formulas were developed to analytically predict the shear strength of the CECFST members by considering the compatibility of deformation between the truss part, arch part and the steel tube. Compared with the calculated results based on several current design specifications, the proposed formulas could get more accurate prediction.

  • The effect of structure size on the nominal strength of unidirectional fiber-polymer composites, failing by propagation of a kink band with fiber microbuckling, is analyzed experimentally and theoretically. Tests of novel geometrically similar carbon-PEEK specimens, with notches slanted so as to lead to a pure kink band (without shear or splitting cracks), are conducted. The specimens are rectangular strips of widths 15.875, 31.75. and 63.5 mm (0.625, 1.25 and 2.5 in and gage lengths 39.7, 79.375 and 158.75 mm (1.563, 3.125 and 6.25 in.). They reveal the existence of a strong (deterministic. non-statistical) size effect. The doubly logarithmic plot of the nominal strength (load divided by size and thickness) versus the characteristic size agrees with the approximate size effect law proposed for quasibrittle failures in 1983 by Bazant This law represents a gradual transition from a horizontal asymptote, representing the case of no size effect (characteristic of plasticity or strength criteria), to an asymptote of slope -1/2 (characteristic of linear elastic fracture mechanics. LEFM) . The size effect law for notched specimens permits easy identification of the fracture energy of the kink bandand the length of the fracture process zone at the front of the band solely from the measurements of maximum loads. Optimum fits of the test results by the size effect law are obtained, and the size effect law parameters are then used to identify the material fracture characteristics, Particularly the fracture energy and the effective length of the fracture process zone. The results suggest that composite size effect must be considered in strengthening existing concrete structural members such as bridge columns and beams using a composite retrofitting technique.

  • It is important to consider the effect of depth when estimating the ultimate strength of a concrete flexural member because the strength always decreases with an increase of member size. In this study, the size effect of reinforced concrete beam was experimentally investigated. For this purpose, a series of beam specimens subjected to 2-point bending load were tested. More specifically, three different depth (d=15, 30, and 60 cm) of reinforced concrete beams were tested to investigate the size effect. The shear-span to depth ratio (a/d=3) and thickness (20 cm) of the specimens were kept constant where the size effect in out-of-plan direction is not considered. The test results are fitted using least square method (LSM) to obtain parameters for modified size effect law (MSEL). The analysis results indicate that the flexural compression strength and ultimate strain decreases as the specimen size increases. Finally, more general parameters for MSEL are suggested.

  • This paper discusses an experimental programme that was carried out to study the effects of specimen size-shape and type of moulds on the compressive strength of concrete. For this purpose, cube specimens with 150 mm dimensions, cylinder specimens with $150{\times}300mm$ dimensions, and prism specimens with $150{\times}150{\times}375mm$ dimensions were prepared. The experimental programme was carried out with several concrete compositions belonging to strength classes C20/25, C25/30, C30/37, C40/50 and C60/75. Furthermore, the test results were curve-fitted using the least squares method to obtain the new parameters for the modified size effect law.

  • The effect of bedding on the microstructure of $Si_3N_4$ added with ultra-fine SiC was investigated. The bedding and the addition of ultra-fine SiC effectively inhibited grain growth of $Si_3N_4$ matrix grain. The microstructures of the specimens sintered with bedding powder consisted of fine-grains as compared with the specimens sintered without bedding powder. In addition, the grain size and the difference of grain size between the specimens sintered with bedding and without bedding was reduced with increasing SiC content. Some ultra-fine SiC particles were trapped in the $Si_3N_4$ grains growed. The number of SiC particles trapped in the $Si_3N_4$ grains increased with increasing the grain growth. When ultra-fine SiC particles were added in the $Si_3N_4$ ceramics, the strength was improved but the toughness was decreased, which was considered to be resulted from the decrease of the grain size.
